Hello everyone,

With the increased use of AI throughout the club, we thought it was time to establish some basic guidelines for its use aboard the OED V. We have discussed these guidelines as a Command Team and are all in agreement on the following ship policies.

AI is changing the way many of us write, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Like any tool, it can be used well or poorly. These guidelines are not about whether you use AI. They are about making sure every member of the crew has an opportunity to contribute to the story, that the Game Master retains control of the mission, and that every player remains the author of their own character. If we all keep those principles in mind, AI can be a valuable writing tool without disrupting the collaborative storytelling that makes this club enjoyable.

AI Guidelines

• AI is permitted aboard the OED V
  AI may be used as long as the following guidelines are observed.

• Use AI as a writing assistant, not as your writer.
  We strongly encourage everyone to write their own posts first and then use AI to help with grammar, spelling, proofreading, or improving sentence flow. The story, ideas, and decisions should still come from you.

• AI does not replace your responsibility as a writer.
  There is no club policy against using AI to help write your posts. However, as the Command Staff of the USS Wolverine, we are responsible for maintaining the quality of writing on this ship and will enforce these guidelines.

• Posts must follow club writing standards.
  Whether written entirely by you or with the assistance of AI, all posts must be written in novel format and in the third person.

• You are responsible for everything your AI writes.
  Always read your AI-generated posts before submitting them. AI regularly makes mistakes, invents information, misunderstands instructions, and ignores established roleplaying etiquette. Any violation of club policy, including our PG-13 standards and god-moding, remains your responsibility.

• Never write for another player’s character.
  This is one of the most common AI mistakes. AI frequently assumes another character’s dialogue, thoughts, emotions, intentions, reactions, or actions in an attempt to complete the scene. Every player controls their own character. If your AI writes for another player’s character, remove it before posting. Repeated violations will be handled through the normal disciplinary process.

• Stay within your character’s knowledge and authority.
  AI often uses information your character could not reasonably know or invents facts to move the story forward. Your character may only act on information they have personally witnessed, been told, or reasonably discovered in character. Do not allow AI to use out-of-character knowledge.

• Do not control the Game Master’s story.
  AI has a habit of solving missions, revealing mysteries, inventing discoveries, creating villains, or resolving conflicts in a single post. Never determine the outcome of a mission, scene, investigation, combat, or major event that is under the control of the Game Master. Likewise, do not invent major story elements unless they have already been introduced or approved by the Game Master. Repeated violations will be handled through the normal disciplinary process.

• Leave room for everyone else to write.
  AI loves long posts and rapid story progression. While detailed writing is welcome, your posts should not move the story so far ahead that other writers are forced to simply agree with what has already happened. We strongly recommend limiting AI-assisted posts to three paragraphs or fewer. This gives everyone an opportunity to participate and keeps the story collaborative rather than turning it into a solo novel. In our opinion, consistently moving the story beyond everyone else is a form of power gaming. Repeated violations will be handled through the normal disciplinary process.

• Respect Star Trek canon and established ship continuity.
  AI frequently invents Star Trek facts that sound believable but are completely incorrect. Before posting, verify that your ranks, technology, procedures, species, timeline, and terminology are accurate. If you are unsure, ask your Game Master or a member of the Command Staff.

• AI should support your creativity, not replace it.
  The best roleplaying comes from you, not from a language model. AI should help you tell your character’s story, not create your character’s personality, decisions, or growth. We want to write with you, not with your AI.

• If you rely on AI because of a disability or other personal circumstance, please let us know.
  We understand that some members rely on AI for legitimate reasons. This may include physical disabilities, medical conditions, neurodiversity, learning differences, language barriers, or English simply not being your first language. We are more than happy to work with you. Our goal is not to prevent anyone from participating, but to make sure everyone can enjoy writing together. If this applies to you, please reach out to a member of the Command Staff privately so we can discuss any accommodations that may be appropriate.

• Repeated issues will result in administrative action.
  If the Command Staff has to address problems with your AI-assisted posts more than twice within a one-month period, you will be placed on a 90-day writing probation. Please take the time to review your work before posting.

These guidelines are not intended to discourage anyone from using AI. They are here to ensure that everyone, whether they write entirely on their own or use AI as a tool, can enjoy the same collaborative storytelling experience.
