Backstory of Talen: Taren spent his early years in starfleet, specializing in the sciences. Having a keen interest in plant life, the majority of his time was spent on other worlds, studying various forms of it. He even created a bit of a hobby of tea making. In his late 20s, Talen was contacted by the Trill Symbiosis Commission, having been identified as an ideal candidate due to his emotional stability and capacity for introspection. They were ideal characteristics, they felt, that would help in handling the Veyl Symbiont. The transfer was life changing. So much so, that Talen Veyl made the choice to retire early from starfleet in order to pursue a simpler life on the frontier of Federation space, hoping to create space for him to handle the unique memories of Veyl.

Backstory of Veyl (via each host):

Soran Veyl (Engineer): Specialized in terraforming technology; stable, structured, and patient.
Lerin Veyl (Diplomat): Known for her negotiation and conflict de-escalation; helped establish early Federation relations with minor powers; believed strongly in dialogue over force
Vodrin Veyl (Intelligence): Operation Ash Veil; worked for section 31; calm but decisive; willing to go the extra mile to get the job done; put aside feeling for rationality.
Eris Veyl (Up and coming diplomat): was chosen to carry Veyl due to her superior ability to empathize with others; her perceived advantage led to her own death; she didn’t just empathize with Veyl, she believed herself to have been involved in the carrying out of past events with other hosts. She lacked the internal boundaries necessary to handle the stark contrast from the past. Because of this, she took her own life and Veyl had to be transferred quickly.

Operation Ash Veil: Classified Section 31 operation (Dominion War)

Operation Ash Veil was an operation targeting a Dominion-controlled planet that served as a critical logistics and cloning hub for Jem’Hadar forces. Faced with the prospect of a prolonged and costly assault, Starfleet Intelligence authorized the use of an experimental atmospheric dispersal agent designed to disrupt Dominion biological processes and collapse their operational foothold in the region.

The operation was successful: Dominion production and coordination in the sector were crippled; Federation forces gained a decisive advantage; The conflict in the region significantly shortened

However, the agent could not distinguish between species. The targeted world was home not only to Dominion forces, but also civilians, prisoners, and displaced populations under Dominion control. As a result, the operation led to the total loss of life on the planet’s surface. Official records describe the operation as an unfortunate, but natural phenomenon that happened to save countless Federation lives, contributing to the end of the war in that region. Starfleet involvement is never mentioned.
