Chapter 01
A little history, how STF is organised, and a few traditions you'll encounter around the community.
STF was founded in 1991 on the Prodigy network and has continued to evolve through multiple generations of online role-playing.
Today our community includes writers across multiple role-playing environments, welcoming experienced players and people completely new to collaborative writing.
STF is run entirely by volunteers. The President is elected by the membership, and the Executive team appoints staff to oversee fleets, departments and day-to-day operations.
Animal nicknames are a long-standing STF tradition awarded to members when they achieve the rank of Captain. They are presented during a Ten Forward ceremony and are optional.
The easy formula is: Current Year + 376 = IC Year.
2026 RL = 2402 IC. Some ships may operate in alternate timelines.
Chapter 02
The basics of simming, writing style and STF's social side.
STF is a bulletin-board style RPG. Posts are written on the boards, and each ship has a designated posting speed showing the expected maximum time between posts.
Most ships have a Gamemaster who guides the main story. Crew members also run side sims and character-development threads, building the story together.
In-character posts are written in third-person past tense, similar to traditional Star Trek novels.
Yes. STF hosts social events, discussions, awards, watch parties and live Discord chat. Ten Forward is the main Out-of-Character board.
Chapter 03
What you can play and how STF approaches unusual concepts.
New members generally begin with a Federation species. Allied and Custom species may be available later at the discretion of your Commanding Officer.
Characters such as former Borg drones or Androids may be permitted at the discretion of the CO.
Hostile species are not normally allowed, although rare exceptions may be considered where there is a strong background explaining the character's circumstances.
Players may not portray characters from the Star Trek shows or movies, or claim their character is a relative or descendant of one of them.
Gamemasters may use established characters for mission cameos where appropriate.
Chapter 04
Training, mentoring and guidance for new and returning players.
The Academy provides a supported environment for people who are new to role-playing or unfamiliar with STF's format.
Academy participation is optional and members usually graduate after roughly 3–4 months.
Experienced role-players who are comfortable with STF's format may skip the Academy and join a Mainfleet directly as an Ensign.
You can request a mentor through the Academy at any time, including during your membership application.
Discord is also a useful place to ask experienced members for help.
