Hannah is not the most ambitious person in Star Fleet. She’s an excellent doctor and she has a drive to help people, and that is her goal in life. She doesn’t see how working towards promotions and rank can make her a better doctor. She’s a doctor first and all the other is an afterthought. However, this does not mean she is a bad officer, she is very good, but her ambition leads her towards learning more about the medical field rather than increasing her position in Star Fleet as a whole. She is also very observant, a skill honed during childhood due to being deaf. Her ability to observe and notice small subtle details helped her to contribute and interact with her friends and family.

Catawba is a research and recreation planet. The life on this planet consists of prehistoric type animals; non-humanoids. There is a small nature park for camping and outdoor type activities that is away from protected wildlife. Space on this nature preserve is limited and reservations must be made. There are multiple observation stations for scientific and educational research across the planet. Heavily camouflaged and anyone wishing to use them must be vetted to ensure the protection of the natural wildlife of the planet.

The colony is a floating colony that hovers above the northern ocean, though it can be navigated slowly to allow the colonists to observe other areas of the planet. The land itself is heavily forested with a few plains and grasslands and small glacial areas at the southern magnetic pole.

The colony harvests plants, having found that many can be used to create medications for a variety of diseases and medical conditions. This harvesting is the main source of income for Catawba. The nature park, though highly popular, can only accommodate a few people at a time. The research stations also bring a lot of interest, but not enough to support the colony alone.

Medical:

Hannah was born deaf. Her parents, being on a new colony that was only just building its economy, had to wait to take her to receive her implants. Hannah learned to read lips and use sign language. As a result she still, out of habit, will use sign language while she speaks. She prefers external implants because sometimes all the sound is too much, and it is much easier to fix them if there is a malfunction. Due to her adventurous nature, Hannah has several old wounds from climbing, hiking, bouldering, or any other outdoor sport she engaged in. While on board the Fearless she had surgery for internal implants. A year later they were removed because of a significant malfunction. Otherwise Hannah is very healthy

Back Story

Hannah was born on the colony world of Catawba. A small research colony that specializes in growing plants and synthesizing medications from them. The world as at a prehistoric age and the colony also provides opportunities for study to outside researchers. Hannah was born deaf and with Catawba being a small and still struggling colony, her parents were unable to take her for hearing implants until she was 8. The entirety of the small research colony learned Federation sign language for Hannah. She was a happy and mischievous child. She was quite the daredevil and unafraid. She loved camping, rock climbing, hiking, bouldering, spelunking, and getting as close as possible to the native animals of the planet. She made top marks in all her classes in school. Hannah spent a lot of time at the observation stations, camping and working alongside her parents and the other adults on the colony.

When Hannah was 8 her parents took her to the nearest medical facility and she received her first set of implants. It took Hannah two years to adjust to hearing sounds and learn how to speak with her voice. She still carries a noticeable “accent”. Hannah still uses FSL even while she talks. It is her first language and she believes it is beautiful and expressive. Even now, during her off hours, Hannah will choose to remove her implants and just be in the silence.

Hannah was fascinated by her mother’s work and by the Star Fleet scientists that came to study on Catawba. She also spent many hours learning about her implants and how they worked and other prosthetic devices. When she was old enough she applied for and passed her entrance exams for the Academy the first time.

It was while at the Academy Hannah met her best friend. A young girl by the name of Alexis. Alexis was a child prodigy and had earned a spot in the Academy despite being younger than the age requirement. Alexis was also training to enter the medical field. Hannah never met anyone who wasn’t a friend, and when she saw how Alexis was so isolated, she took it upon herself to fix that. Underneath the quiet and brilliant exterior Hannah discovered a deeply thoughtful and compassionate person. They are still very close friends.

Hannah’s first year out of the Academy she was assigned to Star Fleet Medical for a special fellowship in prosthetics. It was during this year that Hannah met Daniel Colter. They met when Hannah had taken a weekend to go rock climbing. Their connection was instant. Their personalities and drive, their careers, and everything fit together easily. When Hannah’s year was almost up, things seemed to be going well for the couple until Daniel, an Intel Officer, was sent on a deep cover assignment. He didn’t know how long he would be gone. He left his dog tags with her along with a promise he would find her when his assignment was over.

During Daniel’s absence, Hannah served aboard the Fearless. It was a scientific and colonial support ship. They transported supplies, did medical checks, repaired infrastructure, and addressed larger medical concerns, outbreaks, and setting up new facilities. During these years Hannah also traveled to other locations that requested her for her skills as a prosthetic expert. She made quite a name and reputation for herself as a doctor and a search and rescue officer.

While Hannah had served on the Fearless she had a chance encounter with Jason Reilly when the Fearless was ordered to Theta Kizvik near the Breen border. Their connection was instantaneous and they became close very quickly. But two very short months was not a strong foundation for duty and distance, and they lost touch. Hannah returned to her normal routine, which was to wait for Daniel, but that’s all it was, habit.

Daniel was gone for five years. Eventually, she took a transfer to the Saracen. On her third day on duty, Daniel walked into sickbay and back into her life. For a while they picked up where things left off. Their time at first was easy, but slowly it was obvious that they had both changed too much. Once again Daniel chose duty and Intel. He left her with his dog tags. Hannah knew how to wait, but she was angry and it was all too easy to slip back into a life without him. Three weeks later Ops was sent to her quarters and took all of Daniel’s things and shipped them; Hannah was told to his new ship, but the quartermaster let it slip that his things had been returned home. Hannah was moved to new quarters.

It was after this that Hannah was stopped one day in the corridor by a hand tapping her shoulder to return her implant that fell out of her pocket. It was Jason. Out of nowhere, after so many years he was just there. The man she had truly quietly missed. It was then that Hannah took a transfer to a new position on a colonial world that needed someone with her expertise. Jason had taken a new position there as well, and they are now expecting a child.
