Serial Number: SP-994-077-HA
Current Assignment: Starfleet Security Division on Oed V
Species: Human (Midgardian Colony isolate)
Date of Birth: December 31, 2368 (Mid Mörsugur)
Place of Birth: Settlement of New Uppsala, Midgard IV
Age: 33
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
A towering figure at 6’3”, Lieutenant Alvarsen possesses a lean, muscular build honed by the rigorous gravity and outdoor lifestyle of his homeworld. He has pale skin, heavily freckled from sun exposure, which burns easily under standard class-M G-type stars. He has shoulder-length blonde hair, usually kept pulled back while on duty, and intensely blue eyes. He wears a neatly trimmed, full beard and moustache.
Distinguishing Marks: A prominent, jagged scar runs just above his left eyebrow, barely missing the eye. He freely admits it was the result of a “childhood game” gone awry involving practice blunted weaponry. When asked about the injury, his standard reply is a dry smirk and the comment, “You should see the older boy.”
Uniform: Current service uniform (circa 2399/Picard Era) – Black jacket with mustard yellow shoulders and collar, indicating Security division, with two silver rank pips on the collar.
BACKGROUND SUMMARY
Hatorm Alvarsen is a fifth-generation colonist from Midgard IV, a world settled in the 22nd Century by Scandinavian explorers seeking to preserve their cultural heritage away from an increasingly homogenised Earth. He is the first of his direct lineage to join Starfleet. Alvarsen is a distinct blend of high-tech Starfleet training and a neo-Norse cultural upbringing, combining modern security protocols with the warrior ethos and spiritual lore of his ancestors.
BIOGRAPHY
Early Life on Midgard
Hatorm grew up in New Uppsala, a settlement where advanced terraforming technology hummed beneath the floorboards of great timber mead halls. The Midgard colony is a unique anthropological study: a society using warp-era technology but socially adheres to revived Norse traditions, language, and beliefs.
Hatorm was raised steeped in skaldic lore, learning to read both standard Federation text and ancient Futhark runes simultaneously. His childhood was physically demanding; Midgardian culture places a high premium on personal fortitude, martial prowess, and honor. He grew up believing in the Aesir (the Norse Gods) not necessarily as literal giant beings in the sky, but as powerful archetypes and spiritual guides. While his ancestors were infamous for pillaging, modern Midgardian culture emphasises the “protector” aspect of the Norse ethos—the shield-wall rather than the raiding party.
The scar above his eye occurred during his Glima (folk wrestling) and sword training at age twelve, an incident that cemented his reputation for stubborn resilience in the face of superior odds.
Path to Starfleet
While most Midgardians are content to remain isolated, Hatorm possessed a deep curiosity about the “Nine Realms” beyond Midgard’s sky. When a Federation science vessel made contact with the colony to upgrade their subspace relays in 2385, the 17-year-old Hatorm was fascinated by the diverse crew working in unison. He saw Starfleet not just as exploration, but as the ultimate shield-wall for the quadrant. Against the initial wishes of his traditionalist parents, he applied to Starfleet Academy.
Academy Years (2386-2390)
Hatorm’s time in San Francisco was characterized by intense culture shock. He found Earth oddly soft, loud, and spiritually quiet. He initially struggled with diplomatic protocols and the rigid secularism of Starfleet procedure. However, he excelled physically, dominating in hand-to-hand combat training and survival scenarios. His background in skaldic memorisation made him a surprisingly adept student of military history and tactics. He graduated in the top 5% of his class, specialising in tactical security and threat assessment.
Starfleet Career
- Ensign (2390-2393): Assigned to the USS Cairo (Excelsior-class refit) patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone borders in the unstable years following the supernova. He gained a reputation as a unflappable security officer, capable of de-escalating tense situations with an imposing physical presence and a surprising calm.
- Lieutenant Junior Grade (2393-2397): Transferred to Deep Space K-7. This posting involved dealing with Klingon traffickers and Orion Syndicate smugglers. His cultural understanding of warrior-honor societies allowed him to interact effectively with Klingon crews transiting the station.
- Lieutenant (2397-2341): Promoted to full Lieutenant and assigned as Assistant Chief of Security on the USS Skald. He has seen action in several skirmishes involving rogue Fenris Rangers and remnants of hostile species exploiting the power vacuum of the era.
- Lieutenant (2342-?): Transferred to the Colony World of Oed V and assigned as a Security Officer.
Oed V
- A Riddle and a Dilemma: Hatorm is called out at least once a month by Anna-Liza Riddle (a local busy body) to rescue her cat Di Lemma out of a tree. Hatorm is only two pleased to oblige. She appreciates the strapping lieutenant in his Starfleet uniform and he is only too happy to be helpful. Hatorm is completely and utterly oblivious to Anna-liza’s flirtatious undertones to her requests. To him, the time he spends at the Riddle estate is a point of pride. When Anna-liza asks for a shoulder massage after a “long day in the greenhouse,” Hatorm is only too happy to oblige. He sees it as providing necessary physical support and showing proper respect to a community elder. He happily kneads the knots out of her shoulders while she sighs and casually interrogates him about the precinct’s latest murder case … and his own love life, giving him advice, whether asked for or not. The rest of the department knows what’s going on, but provided he doesn’t give away security codes or the like, no action has been taken against the likeable giant … yet.
- The Director of the Treasury: Hatorm was on duty when Peanadel and her crew arrived on Oed V. He is unsure whether they are to be trusted or not, so he keeps a close eye on them. The Bajoran/Cardassian Dr K (as her calls her) intrigues him, as does the Orion fashion specialist. But he feels most drawn to the Andorian sisters. He engages in armed and unarmed weapons training with Peandel’s personal security leader, the two of them fighting to keep in shape … and perhaps there’s a slight attraction there. With the data analyst though, it is purely an intellectual challenge, they’re both sticklers for procedures and guidelines. She tries to slip things past him, to see if he’s up to the challenge, he spots them, and calls her attention to them, she apologises and says it was an ‘oversight’. He tells her to ensure there are no more oversights in future. He views Peandel’s Mr Fixit as a blacksmith, and worthy of respect. He ‘breaks’ equipment, and gives it to the male Ferengi … who views it as the big giant trying to get him to get work done for free. Peandel tells the Ferengi male to do the work, that Hatorm is in their debt, and that is always helpful.
PERSONALITY PROFILE
Lieutenant Alvarsen is quiet, observant, and fiercely loyal to his crew, whom he views as his personal “hird” (warband/household). He is slow to anger but formidable when roused. While entirely professional on duty, off-duty he keeps to the traditions of his people, often brewing his own mead (synthehol variants as per Federation regulations) and reciting ancient sagas. He often finds modern Federation morality complex, preferring the simpler, harder code of his ancestors: keep your word, defend your kin, and die well if you must. He is a capable officer who bridges the gap between ancient warrior instincts and 25th-century ideals.
STARFLEET MEDICAL DATABASE
PATIENT ID: ALVARSEN, HATORM (LT)
CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER SUMMARY REPORT
BIOMETRIC DATA
- Height: 1.90 meters (6’3”)
- Weight: 80.7 kg (178 lb)
- Blood Type: A+ (Midgardian isolate marker detected – confirm compatibility before non-autologous transfusion).
- Resting Heart Rate: 48 BPM (Athletic bradycardia consistent with high-G upbringing).
PHYSIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
General Health: Excellent. Patient maintains peak physical condition required for Security Division service.
Skeletal & Muscular System:
Bone density and tensile muscle strength measure approximately 18% higher than standard Terran human norms. This is attributed to generational adaptation to Midgard IV’s slightly higher gravity and a childhood regimen of intense physical labor and martial training (Glima wrestling).
Note for field medics: Set dermal regenerators and osteo-knitters to higher settings for effective treatment of deep tissue or bone injuries.
Dermatological Alert:
Patient has Type I (very pale) skin with significant ephelides (freckles). Extremely high susceptibility to UV radiation and thermal burns from G-type stars or brighter.
Mandatory Protocol: Patient must receive maximal-strength sub-dermal melanin treatments prior to any away mission involving direct solar exposure. Alvarsen has historically been negligent in applying topical blockers himself.
SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL HISTORY
- 2380 (Age 12 - Midgard IV): Orbtial Laceration. Deep laceration above the left supraorbital ridge caused by a blunt steel training sword. The orbital bone was micro-fractured but healed without intervention. The optic nerve and globe were miraculously spared. The patient refused cosmetic dermal regeneration to remove the scar tissue, citing “cultural preference.”
2388 (Age 20 - Starfleet Academy): Right Clavicle Fracture. Clean break sustained during advanced zero-G hand-to-hand combat training. Treated with standard osteo-regeneration. Fully healed.
2395 (Age 27 - Deep Space K-7): Multiple Contusions / Rib Fractures. Sustained during an altercation while restraining a chemically altered Nausicaan smuggler. Alvarsen subdued the suspect despite sustaining three cracked ribs. He did not report to Sickbay until four hours after the incident, claiming he needed to finish his shift first.
TOXICOLOGY & DIET
Patient brews his own traditional mead (honey wine) using replicator rations and non-synthehol yeast strains. While he possesses a high metabolic tolerance for ethanol, he has been advised regarding Starfleet regulations on consumption while on active duty rotation.
STARFLEET COUNSELOR’S OFFICE
PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE & DUTY ASSESSMENT
SUBJECT: LT. HATORM ALVARSEN
EVALUATING COUNSELOR: Lt. Cmdr. T’Pau (Vulcan), USS Cairo (Archive entry, 2390), Lt Cmdr. James Ryan, Starbase K-7 (updated 2393) and Lt Leif Olgarsen, USS Skald (updated 2397 and 2399).
SUMMARY OVERVIEW
Lieutenant Alvarsen is a psychologically stable, highly capable, but culturally distinct officer. He operates on a unique internal framework that blends standard Starfleet General Orders with an ancient Norse code of personal honor. He is not driven by ambition or exploration in the traditional sense, but rather by a duty to “protect the realm” (the Federation) and safeguard his immediate crew.
PERSONALITY & COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT
- The “Hird” Mentality: Alvarsen exhibits intense, almost tribal loyalty to the crew he serves with. He views his shipmates as his hird (household guard/warband). This makes him an exceptional unit commander and teammate, willing to endure immense personal risk for them. However, this loyalty is intensely personal rather than institutional; he is loyal to the people, not necessarily the regulations.
- Emotional Regulation: He possesses a high threshold for stress and is described by peers as unflappable. He does not react impulsively. However, when his threshold is crossed—usually due to a threat to his “hird” or a perceived grave insult to honor—his reactive aggression is formidable, controlled, and overwhelming. He does not “snap”; he enters a focused combat state.
- Cultural dissonance: Alvarsen finds mainstream Federation culture (specifically Earth culture) “soft” and overly reliant on words over action. He struggles with diplomatic gray areas. To Alvarsen, a promise is absolute, and deception, even for tactical advantage, is distasteful. He prefers a straightforward fight to political maneuvering.
COPING MECHANISMS
Alvarsen manages the stress of service through traditional Midgardian practices. He finds grounding in physical exertion (Glima training) and the recitation of skaldic lore. These ancient sagas provide him with a moral compass to navigate modern ethical dilemmas. He is an introverted processor; he requires quiet time alone or in the company of close trusted peers (usually sharing his brewed mead) to decompress.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COMMAND STAFF
- Use: Alvarsen is ideally suited for frontline security, tactical response, and leadership roles in volatile environments. He provides a stabilizing, intimidating presence that de-escalates situations before they begin.
- Cautionary Notes: Do not assign Lt. Alvarsen to delicate diplomatic negotiations involving duplicitous species (e.g., Romulan Tal Shiar, Cardassian Obsidian Order remnants). His rigid honor code may conflict with mission parameters requiring subterfuge.
- Management Style: He responds best to direct, unambiguous orders. Appeals to his duty to protect the crew and civilians will motivate him more effectively than abstract Starfleet ideals. He respects strength and competence in leadership; a hesitant commander will lose his respect quickly.
FITNESS FOR DUTY: CLEARED FOR ALL ACTIVE DUTY ASSIGNMENTS.
Addendum note: An exceptionally reliable officer, provided you understand the ancient code he runs on.
