USS Merrimack
Main Sim: Docking Platform, Vey’lan
[Snip]
Captain Glen considered this, but replied, “Our whole experience since we entered the Expanse has been, more than a little ‘odd,’ so if you are asking whether I find crystalline cities soothed by harmonic sounds any more odd? No, I can’t say that I do really! But if you are thinking of those weird Earth-based beliefs in mysterious sound healing and meditation using quartz crystals and quartz tuning forks, that were popular in the 20th Century, then it is indeed strange to find such a thing exemplified here. If I recall correctly, the core belief behind it was that the human body is an interconnected network of energetic frequencies that can be retuned to its natural, harmonious state through vibrational entrainment. Practitioners and enthusiasts blended concepts from ancient energetic traditions (like the chakra system or prana/qi) with the science of physics. Those theories and concepts were largely abandoned by the 21st Century as pure hokum and pretentious nonsense.”
Lieutenant M’Mera’s ears gave a thoughtful twitch as she looked up from the engineering tricorder in her hands. The Captain’s comparison was unexpected, but as she considered the readings still scrolling across the display, she found herself unable to dismiss it outright.
“Perhapss not as implaussible as it firsst appearss, Captain,” she purred thoughtfully. “The engineering data confirmss that the crysstalline lattice throughout Vey’lan iss not ssimply decorative. Every ssstructure we’ve sscanned ressonatess at precissely controlled harmonic frequenciess. The city itsself behavess lesss like individual buildingss and more like componentss of one integrated ssyssstem.” She adjusted a control on the tricorder, bringing up the latest spectral analysis.
“On Earth, thosse beliefss lacked measurable evidence. Here…” Her tail swayed slowly behind her. “Here we are obssserving a civilization that appearss to have engineered an entire environment around harmonic ressonance. Whether itss purpose iss healing, communication, power disstribution, or ssomething elssse remainss unknown.” Her emerald eyes drifted toward the crystalline walls surrounding them.
“You make an excellent point,” the Captain Glen replied. “I stand corrected!”
“What concernss me iss the level of precission involved. The harmonic ssignaturess remain sstable acrosss kilometerss of ssstructure, including the geometric network extending beneath the city. Maintaining ressonance on that sscale would require engineering far beyond anything I’ve encountered.”
She lowered the tricorder slightly, her whiskers giving the faintest twitch.
“I would hessitate to call it mysstical, ssir. If anything, it appearss to be extraordinarily advanced engineering operating on principless we do not yet undersstand.” Her ears rotated forward with quiet curiosity.
“And if the city iss responding to uss…” She paused, glancing around the silent crystalline chamber. “Then we may not ssimply be sstanding insside a machine.”
A faint rumbling purr escaped her chest as she looked back to Captain Glen. “We may be insside ssomething that iss actively lissstening.”
“I did say mysterious, rather than mystical, but I guess I’m not totally convinced by magical connections with higher powers, and do believe that science can explain everything,” Captain Glen replied. “That isn’t to say that I don’t believe there are things beyond normal human understanding. It’s a case of that old Clarke’s Third Law again, that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
Still not totally convinced that Vey’lan was not some kind of life form, Elyss kept her thoughts to herself. The first time she’d suggested it, no one on the away team took her seriously. She had given them a different take on the lights and harmonics and had been shut down. No one needed that to happen twice. She scanned her tricorder again, looking for another possibility.
Captain Glen replied, “What we are observing does appear to support Lieutenant Zavey’s earlier idea that the Vey’lan is a crystalline entity rather than a biological life form, and that it has grown itself into this massive city we are seeing, rather than being built by some other race of occupants. Or, even her other suggestion that it has consciousness and it deliberately grew itself for another species to live in, in a kind of symbiotic relationship, and it is asking us now if we want to take up residence here. If so, how is it going to react if we were to decline the invitation?”
Rana whose face was screwed so tight in thought that it appeared that he must soon give himself a headache, spoke tentatively saying,” The lattices that we know about aren’t just something random. They may be but for any number of them to exist would require that one group of atoms to form up with its neighbors to form in a way that they can stay together for any length of time. I think that we’re forgetting all the high gravity we came through. It might be enough to do strange things like this. I think that if we concede that the lattices formed under natural conditions then we have to also concede that it may be some evolved sort of life and probably curious.” Rana then laughed at himself. ” But my physics professor was never happy with me.
“She could be right,” Dr. Kahu Grahams looked at her briefly before continuing with what he was going to say, “In Sickbay, we had a patient come out of a coma and he said ‘not a who a where’ it was obvious someone or something was using him to communicate. It said that ‘it’ knew we were here and identified itself as ‘The Caretaker’. It said that we were seeking ‘The Silent One’ and that the Silent One was sleeping.”
“I don’t really know what to make of it, but I can say it was spooky”
“And you do believe that ‘The Silent One’ is what we are looking for?” Captain Glen asked. “Can we find this ‘Caretaker’ and ask for directions?”
The illuminated pathway led the away team down a broad crystalline ramp, descending deeper into the heart of the structure. The architecture remained seamless, every wall, arch, and column appearing grown from a single immense crystal. Soft blue-white light radiated from the walls themselves while towering pillars stretched overhead, threaded with faint streams of light. The ever-present harmonic resonance echoed throughout the vast interior, yet no machinery, light fixtures, doors, or recognizable control systems were visible.
Captain Glen could see the glowing pathway continuing steadily downward while adjoining passages remained noticeably dimmer.
Commander Rana Singh’s tricorder continued reporting stable atmospheric conditions, one standard gravity, and extraordinary structural integrity throughout the building.
Lieutenant M’Mera’s engineering scans showed the harmonic lattice continuing uninterrupted through every surface, while the immense geometric network beneath Vey’lan grew progressively denser as they descended. Harmonic energy increased gradually but remained perfectly synchronized, with no generators, conduits, or conventional power systems detected.
Lieutenant Elyss Zavey’s scientific tricorder continued identifying the crystal as unlike any naturally occurring material within Federation records, while sensor returns became increasingly coherent deeper within the structure.
Lieutenant Grahams’ medical scans showed the away team remained physiologically normal. No environmental hazards were detected, though the subtle synchronization of low-level neural oscillations previously observed continued to increase slightly.
Lieutenant John Reeves’ security scans detected only the expected Shiarian lifesigns ahead. No concealed weapons, defensive systems, surveillance devices, or unidentified lifesigns were present.
Commander Thalos’ tactical sensors confirmed the structure itself continued carrying every sound through its crystalline lattice before blending it into the surrounding harmonic resonance.
The corridor finally opened into an immense circular chamber of broad concentric terraces surrounding a central crystalline platform. Dozens of Shiarians occupied the tiered benches, while others walked quietly among the terraces or stood beside towering crystalline columns. No one appeared to speak, yet subtle changes in the chamber’s harmonics accompanied their movements. Scientific analysis indicated the Shiarian lifesigns and the chamber’s resonance were synchronized into the same harmonic field.
Engineering and science tricorders confirmed the chamber sat directly above one of the largest intersections within the immense geometric network beneath Vey’lan, where harmonic energy converged at the central platform before flowing outward through the surrounding structure.
Beyond the occupied chamber, the illuminated pathway continued deeper beneath the city, disappearing beyond the range of the away team’s tricorders.
GM Nosferatu
Your Darkest NightmareThalos remained on the right flank of the away team as they entered the immense chamber, his silver eyes instinctively sweeping across the assembled Shiarians.
There were dozens of them.
None appeared armed.
None displayed the posture of sentries or guards.
Yet every instinct honed through years in the Imperial Guard urged him to remain observant.
His tricorder continued to display the same result.
The structure was carrying every sound made within the chamber through its crystalline lattice before blending it seamlessly into the surrounding harmonic resonance.
He looked from the silent Shiarians to the towering crystal columns surrounding them.
“Captain.”
His voice was deliberately measured, softer than normal.
“We’ve entered what appears to be a gathering place.”
He studied the assembled inhabitants for another moment.
“Notice that although they are not speaking, each movement is accompanied by a subtle change in the chamber’s harmonic resonance.”
His antennae slowly rotated, listening as much as sensing.
“Combined with what my tricorder has been reporting since we entered the structure, I believe every sound generated within this chamber becomes part of the city’s harmonic network.”
He paused thoughtfully.
“Whether intentional or not, it may be prudent for us to keep our voices low and unnecessary conversation to a minimum.”
“I agree,” Captain Glen replied. “Let’s just observe for now. But whether or not the structure of this place is a living being, or a crystalline entity, one thing is certain. The Shiarains do exist, and they are flesh and blood, just like us.”
Thalos’ attention shifted back to the Shiarians.
“If this resonance forms part of their means of communication… I would rather we observe first than inadvertently interrupt it.”
With that, Thalos resumed his silent vigil, allowing the scientists to study the phenomenon while Security maintained its watch over the away team and the quietly observing Shiarians.

Starfleet CommandLieutenant Grahams’ medical scans showed the away team remained physiologically normal. No environmental hazards were detected, though the subtle synchronization of low-level neural oscillations previously observed continued to increase slightly.
It was a relief to see the team were within normal parameters and there were no hazards that he could spot. It eased his concern that what had happened to the crew on board the ship would happen there, but he refused to let that concern fade entirely. He needed it to keep him sharp. A sheep or a beast with Barbers Pole could look fine one day and then be struck down the next. As much as he’d like to think that the worst of it was over, medically at least, the last thing he wanted was for the team to be afflicted again, in unfamiliar territory so far away from the U.S.S Merrimack.
There were still neural oscillations happening and although they were small, he didn’t know what was influencing it. Were their minds still adapting? Were they reacting? Or was it because they were getting closer to this ‘Silent One’?
Now they were surrounded by Shiarians he turned to scan one of them wondering if their brains were all synchronized together or if they were something else.
