<SNIP>The bridge did not return to normal. Not fully.
Even as the sensor noise reasserted itself and the sharp edge of that impossible symmetry dissolved back into chaotic readouts, something remained just beneath the surface—like a pattern refusing to be forgotten.
At Engineering and Ops, the numbers continued to drift.
• OPS: EPS flow variance now cycling in repeating intervals—no longer random
• ENGINEERING: Shield harmonics stabilizing… then slipping… then stabilizing again, as if being “tuned” from an external reference
• SCIENCE (passive): Residual psionic resonance persists—now phase-locked to Lt. Batario’s neural patternsNear Pawl, the air felt… thinner.
Not physically—but perceptually. Sound lagged by fractions. Light seemed to hold just a moment too long before settling.
And then—
It touched him again. Softer this time.
Not the probing pressure from before, but something more precise. Focused. Curious.
The strain on Pawl’s mind spiked sharply—
• MEDICAL: Neural activity exceeding safe threshold limits
• MEDICAL: Cognitive feedback loop forming—risk of cascade failure imminentOn his console, the desynchronized text halted entirely. Then, without input—It corrected itself.
Every note he had taken reordered. Clean. Structured. Refined into a pattern far more complex than he had written… yet unmistakably derived from his own thoughts.
A response. Not in words—but in understanding.
Across the ship, the effect rippled outward:
• SENSORS: Localized spacetime distortion tightening around the Chernov—radius decreasing
• TEMPORAL SCAN (Forster): Target fluctuation narrowing—object beginning to “resolve” within normal spacetime bands
• GRAVIMETRIC READINGS: External field reacting to internal neural activityThe entity was no longer simply observing. It was… aligning.
And for the briefest moment—just before the strain threatened to overwhelm him completely—Pawl felt something new from it.
Recognition. Not of who he was. But of what he was doing. Reaching. Learning. The same as it.
Then the pressure surged once more—sharper, more dangerous than before—
As if the next exchange would not be passive.
As if the line between observer… and participant… was about to disappear.

Your Darkest Nightmare“Sir, I can’t let him continue without attempting to help. This thing he’s attached to is going to burn his mind out.” Mykl reached into the medical kit and brought out a neural suppressant. “I have to break contact with it or we might lose Lt Batario!” She reached out to place it on Paul’s head.
Lieutenant Mykl Najjar
Chief Medical Officer USS ChernovKastarak, having found himself micro-dissociating with all things going on, tried snapping out of it. He was losing Pawl, his love (albeit repressed love). The pain in the gut was unbearable. If he hadn’t known better, Kastarak would have guessed he suffered from ileus. But he didn’t. He knew. This was heartache, anxiety, panic.
He rose from his seat, purged the emotions as much as he could (though at this time, his emotions were, in his own description, incontinent).
“Doctor, do what needs be. You are the attending physician. Do what you can to save him.”
“Other stations, report! Situation? Hypotheses? Recommendations?”
Kastarak, Cpt
Commanding Officer“If the Officer is in danger of having a mental overload, I say we can unplug it and let it rest. I recommend we sedate him maybe him going into a dreamless sleep well help his brain to calm down.” I said, thinking “or maybe he needs a mental anchor, someone he trusts. A voice that can cut through the chaos and have them focus on it and come back to us,” he said again
Lt. John Forster (CWO)
Pawl continued to try to communicate with the entity. ~ I am Lt. Pawl Batario, Chief Engineer of the Federation starship USS Chernov.~ Pawl thought to the entity. ~I am a Betazoid as a species.~ Pawl did his best to try to reach a dialogue with the being. Pawl felt his anchor was slipping even though he tried his best to keep himself in place. He thought about letting go of the anchor and seeing what would happen. He did not wish to do that until he had a better sense of the entity. Pawl did his best not to show any Federation or Starfleet secrets. But he would warn the captain of such an action.

[[Chief_Engineer]] [[Uss_Chernov]]John spoke to pawl his voice was strong “Pawl this is John it’s time for you to come back. Focus on my voice focus on the here and now you need to know what is happening if you don’t disconnect come back to the here and now focus on my voice, gather your strength and move towards it” hopefully it reached him
Lt. John Forster (CWO)
Mykl didn’t see any change in Batario’s condition while Forster called out to him, so she placed the neural suppressor on his forehead. The tool didn’t men all neural activity would cease, but it would lessen the activity so Paul could survive.
Lieutenant Mykl Najjar
Chief Medical Officer USS ChernovThe moment the neural suppressor made contact—the universe reacted. Not the ship. Not the crew. Something beyond. Pawl’s neural readings did not drop. They spiked.
• MEDICAL: Neural activity exceeding measurable parameters
• MEDICAL ALERT: Suppressor feedback loop detected—external interference suspected
• SCIENCE: Psionic resonance surge—amplitude increasing exponentially. The device in Najjar’s hand tremored—not from mechanical fault, but as if something on the other side of Pawl’s mind had noticed the intrusion… and turned its attention toward it.
A faint harmonic whine—not audible but felt—rippled through the deck plating beneath their feet.
On every console across the bridge, data froze. Then rewrote. Clean. Ordered. Intentional.
Chaotic telemetry collapsed into elegant symmetry—fractals within waveforms, recursive loops nested inside subspace readings, each layer more precise than the last. LCARS interfaces flickered as if trying—and failing—to fully render what they were being shown. The same pattern.
Watching. Learning. Responding. Inside the link—Pawl’s declaration did not vanish into the void. It was received….by something.
His identity—his species—his intent—did not travel as words, but as sensation, memory, and structure. The feeling of warp plasma under his command. The rhythm of EPS flow. The discipline of Starfleet. The quiet emotional undercurrent he kept contained.
All of it unfolded outward. And for the first time—the entity answered with something closer to recognition. Not language. Not thought.Contact.
It did not simply observe him. It touched him.
Gently at first—like a fingertip brushing the surface of his mind—not invasive, but impossibly vast. Pawl felt it trace along the edges of his identity, not breaking through his defenses, but mapping them.Understanding their shape. Their limits. And then—it mirrored him.
For a single, disorienting instant, Pawl felt himself reflected back like a mirror —not as he knew himself, but as the entity perceived him: A lattice of impulses. Electrical storms firing in patterned bursts. A finite signal—bright, complex… and small. His name echoed back, not as “Pawl Batario” but as a resonance. A frequency. A signature embedded within the greater field. Catalogued. Acknowledged. Then the connection deepened. The entity did not speak—but it shared. A fragment, a glimpse.
Pawl’s awareness stretched—pulled gently beyond its normal boundaries. He did not leave his body, but his perception expanded outward, as if his mind had been given additional dimensions to exist within. He saw—not space as stars and void—but as currents.
Layered, flowing, intersecting streams of subspace and time, weaving through one another like an endless ocean of motion. The Chernov was there—small, bright, disruptive—a disturbance in a vast, ordered system. And the entity—it was not separate from that ocean. It was the ocean. Or part of something even larger within it. Where Pawl was a single point—The entity was everywhere the currents touched.
On the bridge—Forster’s voice cut through. And for a moment—It worked.
• MEDICAL: Brief neural stabilization detected
• PSIONIC READOUT: Anchor formation—external emotional/recognition link established.Pawl’s slipping anchor caught—just barely—on something familiar. A voice. A connection. A tether to here.
The warmth of a presence. The certainty of self. The reminder that he was not alone. But the entity felt it too. And this time—it did not just observe it. It reached toward the connection.
The moment that human connection formed—the pressure returned. Sharper. Focused. But no longer probing blindly.
Now it was targeted.
• SENSORS: Spacetime curvature tightening further around USS Chernov
• TEMPORAL SCAN: Target vessel stabilizing—phase variance dropping rapidly
• ENGINEERING: Shield harmonics now synchronized to unknown external frequency.Across multiple stations, the data began to align—not just with Pawl—But with the bridge itself. Heartbeats. Voice patterns. Neural rhythms. The entity was learning the connections between minds on the entire ship.
Najjar’s suppressor flared once—then dimmed, its output fluctuating unpredictably as Pawl’s brain activity refused to yield to conventional limits.
The tool was working—but something else was working against it. Or perhaps around it. Adapting in real time.
And then—Pawl felt it. A shift in intent. The curiosity remained. But now it was accompanied by something new. Not hunger. Not hostility.
Invitation. The fragment it had shown him returned but altered and incomplete.
Where before there had been flowing currents, now there was a gap—a missing segment in the pattern.
And Pawl understood, without being told: It was not just showing him. It was asking him to complete it. To respond not with words—but with understanding. On the bridge, every system seemed to hold its breath. Even the hum of the warp core felt subdued, as if the ship itself was listening. Because the next moment was clear—either Pawl would follow Forster’s voice…
Or he would answer the entity. And if he chose the latter—The readings already made one thing unmistakably clear:
The Chernov was no longer just observing the phenomenon. It was being integrated into it.
And Pawl—was no longer just in contact. He was becoming a point of connection between two vastly different forms of existence.
Nosferatu
Your Darkest NightmareWill look around the bridge, taking in the various flickering data from across the displays, as everyone else watched the Betazoid. The hairs on the back of his neck shifted slightly, as he sensed the changes across the bridge, all of which just gave indications of what was happening across the ship. He had a bad feeling about this.
“System status reports?”, he barked, emphasising that he was more focused on what was happening to the rest of the ship.
OOC: So sorry for my absence - it’s been a hell of a couple of months! Normal posting service resumes :D
Cmdr William Archer
First OfficerNajjar continuerd monitoring Batario, shaking her head, but unaware of it. “The neural suppressor is actually working but something else is interferring.” Quickly, she replayed everything that had happened on the bridge since her arrival and tried to see if she’d missed something that could help. Forester! He’d had an idea. She looke up from where she squatted next to Paul and looked around at the bridge crew. “Does anyone here have a special connection with Batario? He needs an anchor, something or someone to hold him here. To help him fight. Anyone?”
Lieutenant Mykl Najjar
Chief Medical Officer USS ChernovKastarak knew he had.
“Mr Archer, you are in charge. I will tend to Pawl.” Kastarak stepped down to Najjar and Batario.
Speaking to Najjar, he said firmly, “I have that connection. Tell me what to do, and I will do it.”
