Incoming Priority MessageFROM: Starfleet Intelligence
TO: Lt. T’Pris
SUBJECT: Departmental Intelligence Annex
Starfleet Intelligence has compiled the attached reference files for your review prior to USS Wolverine’s departure. The attached material represents the most current information available concerning your department’s expected responsibilities during Operation: False Colors.
Attached Files:
*Science Annex
- Karthos Drift Environmental Assessment
- Long-Range Sensor Assessment
- Tricorder Performance Assessment
- Environmental Hazard Assessment
- Astrophysics Brief
- Biology Brief
- Xenology Brief
- Chemistry Brief
- Geology Assessment
- Subspace Brief-The Bard
T’Pris sat behind the desk in her office within the Science Department, the priority message from Starfleet Intelligence displayed across her terminal. Her eyes moved methodically down the list of attached files, one eyebrow rising fractionally at the breadth of material provided.
Eleven separate assessments. Starfleet Intelligence evidently anticipates that the Karthos Drift may present challenges extending considerably beyond routine sensor operations.
Rather than draw conclusions from the titles alone, T’Pris turned slightly toward the computer interface. “Computer, open the Departmental Intelligence Annex received from Starfleet Intelligence concerning Operation: False Colors.”
She waited for the packet to initialize before continuing. “Display the Karthos Drift Environmental Assessment first. Include all available information regarding local stellar phenomena, gravimetric conditions, radiation levels, navigational hazards, and any environmental factors capable of affecting scientific operations.”
T’Pris rested her hands lightly upon the desk. “Upon completion, proceed sequentially through the Long-Range Sensor Assessment and Tricorder Performance Assessment. Identify known causes of sensor degradation, estimated operational ranges, interference sources, and any recommended compensatory measures.”
Her eyebrow remained subtly elevated as she regarded the remaining files. “Then display the Environmental Hazard Assessment and Astrophysics Brief, followed by the Biology, Xenology, Chemistry, and Geology assessments. Include all available survey observations, known lifeforms, anomalous readings, previous sampling results, and unresolved scientific questions.”
She paused briefly. “Conclude with the Subspace Brief. Cross-reference its contents against the environmental and astrophysical assessments and identify any documented correlations between subspace phenomena and the anticipated degradation of Wolverine’s scientific instrumentation.”
T’Pris settled back slightly in her chair. “Begin, when ready, with the Karthos Drift Environmental Assessment.” Her gaze remained fixed upon the terminal as she awaited the requested information.

Chief Science Officer
USS WolverineThe computer issued a beep when the requested information about the Karthos Drift Environmental Assessment was ready.
1. Karthos Drift Environmental Assessment
Classification: Established Starfleet AssessmentGeneral Environment
Karthos Drift occupies an unusually dense and unstable asteroid field. The surrounding belt contains significant concentrations of: duranium-rich Ore, tritanium veins, native verterium-based mineral structures, ionized particulate matter, and localized gravimetric instabilities. Each condition is understood individually but difficult to predict collectively. The primary danger comes from environmental instability and unpredictability of how known phenomena will interact in any particular place and time.
Known Effects
The environment produces the following known impacts: Scattering of subspace signals, Electromagnetic signal disruption, Significant sensor shadowing, and Atypical lensing of gravimetric waves.Known Environmental Hazards
Starfleet records identify the following hazards: Unstable asteroid movement, localized radiation spikes, intermittent sensor blindness, transporter interference, navigation errors, communication delays, as well as false sensor contacts.Stellar Phenomena
Available assessments attribute the majority of observed interference to the interaction of mineral density, ionized particulate matter, and localized gravimetric instability. No further conclusions are considered reliable at this time.Gravimetric Conditions
Current data is insufficient to establish stable predictive models for intensity, duration, or geographic consistency. Updated in-theater observations will be required for precise forecasting.Radiation Levels
Radiation conditions are highly varied and localized. Historical readings show intermittent spikes associated with industrial activity, abandoned reactors, mining operations, and environmental interactions. No uniform baseline should be assumed across the Drift.Navigational Hazards
Starfleet considers asteroid movement, gravimetric shear, intermittent sensor degradation, and industrial debris to be persistent hazards. Exact risk levels vary significantly by location, current traffic conditions, and recency of orbital drift charts (See Navigational Annex for further summary)Scientific Operations
Sensor performance, transporter reliability, comms quality, and positional accuracy may degrade unpredictably depending upon local environmental conditions. No universal correction factor has been established.
- The Bard
T’Pris remained seated as the Environmental Assessment filled the terminal. Her eyes moved steadily through the information, pausing briefly over several entries before returning to the beginning.
The individual hazards were largely conventional but their interaction was not. The absence of a reliable environmental baseline will be of greater operational significance than any single identified phenomenon.
She opened a new working file alongside the Intelligence packet.=^=Computer, create a preliminary Science Department report for Captain Williams regarding Operation: False Colors. Designate the current document as Karthos Drift Scientific Operational Assessment.=^=
T’Pris began collating the Intelligence data into categories that would be useful to the Captain rather than simply reproducing Starfleet Intelligence’s original assessment.
=^=Record the Karthos Drift as an environmentally unstable asteroid region containing significant duranium, tritanium, native verterium structures, ionized particulate matter, and localized gravimetric instability.=^=
Her fingers moved across the terminal, adding several annotations of her own.=^=Flag the interaction between mineral density, ionized particulates, and gravimetric instability as the primary environmental variable requiring further investigation.=^=
She continued. =^=Under operational hazards, record intermittent sensor blindness, false sensor contacts, transporter interference, communications disruption, navigational errors, localized radiation spikes, unstable asteroid movement, gravimetric shear, and industrial debris.=^=
T’Pris paused at the entry concerning radiation and she studied it closer before continuing, =^=Note that historical radiation measurements cannot be considered representative of current conditions. Sources include industrial activity, abandoned reactors, mining operations, and environmental interactions. Recommend Wolverine establish localized baselines upon entering the Drift.=^=
Another notation followed. =^Under scientific limitations, record that no universal correction factor presently exists for sensor performance, communications reliability, transporter operations, or positional accuracy. Mark updated in-theater observations as essential to developing predictive models.=^=
She regarded the growing report for several seconds, the document was deliberately preliminary. One assessment could establish conditions, but it could not establish their full operational consequences. Those would become clearer as the remaining Intelligence material was incorporated.
=^=Computer, retain all source references from the Environmental Assessment and cross-reference subsequent Intelligence files against these findings. Highlight corroborating information, contradictions, and any additional hazards not contained within this initial assessment.=^=
T’Pris folded her hands upon the desk as she sat back, reading over her work. =^=Save the current report as a working document. Do not finalize conclusions or recommendations until all Intelligence annexes have been reviewed.=^=
Her attention returned to the original packet.
=^=Now access the second file.=^= One eyebrow lifted slightly as she pondered whether the Captain would be up to a lengthy report. =^=Display the complete Long-Range Sensor Assessment. Include documented sensor limitations, effective detection ranges, known interference mechanisms, frequency-dependent degradation, false-positive characteristics, and all recommended compensatory procedures or modifications.=^=
T’Pris settled back slightly, her gaze fixed upon the terminal. =^=Cross-reference the assessment against the environmental conditions already catalogued and identify which documented conditions within the Karthos Drift are known to affect Wolverine’s long-range sensor capabilities.=^=
She waited.=^=Proceed.=^= Sitting back one last time as the computer prepared to fulfill her request, she picked up her Vulcan tea and sipped contemplatively.
