📖 Background
Jackson Quade was born in Brisbane, Australia, on Stardate 2356.2 — the second son of a merchant marine captain and a trauma surgeon who between them had built a household that ran on discipline, black coffee, and the unspoken understanding that comfort was something you earned after the work was done. The Queensland coast shaped him early: sun-hardened, physically capable, and possessed of the particular self-reliance that comes from growing up somewhere the land itself doesn’t coddle you. He surfed before he could read a star chart. He was in his first fistfight at nine and won it not through size but through the cold assessment of a boy who had already decided that losing was not a viable outcome.

His father took him aboard a civilian freighter run from Earth to Proxima Colony the summer he turned twelve, and something locked into place that no subsequent experience has ever unlocked. Not the stars — he had seen stars. The ship. The machinery of a crew operating as a single organism under pressure, the way his father moved on that bridge — not with authority so much as with inevitability — and the understanding that the ocean his father had always sailed was simply larger than anyone on the ground had told him.

He applied to Starfleet Academy at seventeen. Was rejected on his first attempt — his entrance assessment flagged what the evaluators called “a pattern of unilateral decision-making inconsistent with collaborative crew environments.” He read the assessment once, filed it, and spent the following year systematically addressing every specific concern it raised. He was accepted on his second application with a commendation from the same evaluation board that had turned him down.
Starfleet Academy (2373–2378)

At the Academy, Quade was not the most gifted student in any single discipline and was among the most effective officers the Tactical track had produced in a decade. The distinction matters. Gift is something you have. Effectiveness is something you build, and Quade built his with the methodical intensity of someone who has looked at the gap between where he is and where he intends to be and is not interested in anything that doesn’t close it.
He discovered the Starfleet Marine Corps in his second year through a cross-track combat training module that left most cadets bruised and left Quade asking when the next session was. The Marine track within the Academy was not heavily subscribed — most command cadets viewed it as lateral at best. Quade viewed it as the only track that asked the question he was most interested in: not how do you command a crew but how do you hold a position when everything around you is trying to take it.
He completed both tracks. It took him five years instead of four. He did not consider this a delay.
USS Tethys (2378–2381)

His first posting as Ensign was aboard the USS Tethys, a Nebula-class vessel assigned to sector patrol near the Cardassian border in the years of uneasy tension that preceded the war nobody was yet officially calling a war. He served under a Captain who operated on the philosophy that the best way to avoid a fight was to be so obviously prepared for one that no one wanted to start it. Quade found this philosophy congenial.
He made Lieutenant Junior Grade after the Kessler Station incident — a border dispute that escalated to a boarding attempt that was turned back in forty-seven minutes, largely because the Ensign assigned to secondary hull security had reorganized the defensive positions before the attempt began. The after-action report noted he had been “in precisely the correct location at each of the six key moments of the engagement.” It did not explain how he had known. Quade could have explained but wasn’t asked.
3rd Marine Expeditionary Force (2381–2384)

Three years with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. Four planets and one moon. The record is classified. Quade does not discuss it in any official capacity and discusses it in no unofficial one either. What the record does show is that he entered the assignment as a First Lieutenant and left it as a Captain, that he received no formal commendations during this period that appear in his accessible file, and that six subsequent commanding officers across his career noted “presence under fire” in their evaluations — a phrase that suggests its author has been somewhere fire was present.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in the fleet and Marine Captain upon return to active fleet assignment.
USS Ardent (2384–2391)

Assigned USS Ardent (NCC-71812, Steamrunner-class), Maquis border corridor patrol. Made Lieutenant Commander and Marine Major during this posting. Served as Chief Tactical Officer from SD 2388.3. Awarded Starfleet Citation for Distinguished Service following the Lethean Corridor engagement — a three-day running encounter with a coordinated Maquis strike group that the Ardent resolved without loss of crew through tactical positioning that her commanding officer later described as “the kind of thing you don’t teach, you either have or you don’t.”
USS Kerrigan (2391–2401)

He was thirty-four when he was given his first independent command — the USS Kerrigan, a Defiant-class escort assigned to the Badlands patrol corridor. The Kerrigan was a ship built for exactly one thing, and Quade commanded her with an efficiency that the vessel seemed to appreciate in the way that machines sometimes seem to appreciate being used correctly.

He held her for seven years. Seven years of the Badlands — its plasma storms and its desperate inhabitants and its particular brand of violence that does not announce itself before it arrives. The Kerrigan came back from all of it. So did her crew. Quade considered this the primary metric.
The Starfleet Medal of Valor was awarded at SD 2395.4, following an engagement in the Badlands whose details remain classified. The citation is two sentences. The first sentence names the award. The second reads: “For actions above and beyond the call of duty, at extreme personal risk, in defense of Federation personnel.” Quade has never spoken publicly about what those actions were.
