Alba happened to be sitting behind one of the consoles to which one of her fellow colleagues had turned on an audio description for the display. Everything had been going as it was intended, until there was a familiar chirp which emerged from the 27 year old Canidin’s communication badge.

The audio description software translated the information displayed on the screen into a steady stream of synthesized information. It was not as quick as simply reading the data herself, but it allowed her to interact with the interface independently.

“Displaying data received from Science Department regarding asteroid belt sensor network deployment.”

Alba angled her head slightly toward the speakers as the information continued.

“Primary objectives: improve sensor buoy survivability, maintain long-term operational capability, and reduce degradation caused by environmental interference.”

The console emitted another soft tone.

“Displaying projected operational challenges.”

A moment later, the computer began reading through the information displayed.

“Environmental factors identified: increased gravimetric instability, elevated electromagnetic interference, sensor attenuation risk, and navigational drift affecting autonomous probe positioning.”

Alba leaned slightly closer, allowing the audio description to continue.

She didn’t need to see the simulation.

The information was already becoming a structure in her mind.

Variables.

Potential failures.

Stress points.

Every system had a weakness.

The trick was finding it before the system did.

“Computer,” she said quietly.

The audio description paused.

“Open communications channel to Lieutenant Buchanan.”

A brief chirp responded.

“Channel open.”

She took a breath.

Her snow colored muzzle turned away from the holographic screen before one of her padded hand-paws leaned against the LCARS interface in front of her

She paused briefly, making sure her voice stayed steady. Trying to pay no mind to other officers walking around in the background to mess with her concentration at task.

=^= Initial assessment indicates the primary concerns are going to be maintaining probe stability during gravimetric fluctuations while preventing sensor degradation from electromagnetic interference. =^=

Each subtle vibration confirmed another menu selection as the audio description continued feeding her the simulation parameters.

=^= Once baseline tolerances have been established, we can introduce compound variables and determine whether the buoy failures result from cumulative stress or from a single critical threshold being exceeded. That should provide Science with more meaningful recommendations than treating the asteroid belt as a single environmental problem. =^=

=/\=Engineering to the Chief. I had the understanding that another engineering officer was running this but that does not seem to be correct. I will get started on the simulations now. Will provide details to the science lab as soon as I have them.=/\= Ensign Beauchêne replied.

The ensign then begin entering the details which were provided by the chief had provided to engineering to be able to start some simulations. He knew the more he could run, the better so he knew he needed to get started. He then said, “Computer, can you please start some simulations for probe longevity, handling the re-calibration on the fly which the probe is in the belt, and what else might be needed based on the information I have entered into the computer?” He then begin feeding some additional data he received from the chief along with some specifics on needing the probes to stay working for the longest period of time by having ti adjust both the trajectory as well as the way its handled shielding in order to keep the probes active as long as possible to provide as much data possible. He then waiting for the results of the simulation.

The white Canidin’s head snapped towards the source from that voice, left ear angling just slightly to the back . At first she hadn’t made any protest, it was too early for the lieutenant to utter a word from her muzzle when she was the department’s newbie. Instead choosing to hold out a paw to her white cane before standing up from that console.

Purplish red eyes shifted towards the ensign without sight, or whence she had assumed they’d be. She took a couple of steps forward, which were hesitant at first before pointing the end of the stick right in front of her body. Surely enough the department happened to be followed with workshop noises as well as the familiar sound from different tools at work.

A long, yet tense breath escaped Alba’s muzzle when approaching one of the central consoles. The white cane’s tip crashing against one of the lower panels before she did. Stopping abruptly, she held out the opposite paw against the surface in order to identify what the object standing in her path happened to be.

No matter what the computer did the probs did not last longenough in the chaos that was surounding the drift. The computer onboard the probes could not keep up with the changing environment and the shield enven with increased power did not last long under load. There was however a 1% increase in survival time for each probe.
