Pawl stood there silent for a long moment. “Can we match the distortion levels to give a more uniform bridge for the transporter systems and other systems?” Pawl asked the officer. as he continued looking over the readings. He opened his mind to the entity: ~”Tamm, are you trying to help bridge the gap? Are you wanting more assistance or help? With the unknown intruder?”~ Pawl asked calmly. Waiting to hear from Tamm or the engineering officer near him.

The engineering officer studied the distortion profile Pawl had indicated, overlaying the transporter carrier frequencies against the derelict’s harmonic pattern. “It may be possible, Commander. Instead of eliminating the distortion, we could compensate for it.” He adjusted the model, bringing several waveforms into alignment. “If we dynamically match the targeting scanners to each harmonic pulse, we may be able to maintain transporter resolution longer without transmitting anything toward the derelict.”

Another technician began constructing an adaptive compensation routine. “We’ll need several more pulses to establish safe tolerances before I’d recommend using it for personnel.”

Through Pawl’s established connection with Tamm, the Entity responded to his question. The contact carried an immediate impression of danger, followed by the presence of unfamiliar beings somewhere aboard the ancient vessel.

~They take what is not theirs. The old one protects itself.~

Another impression followed: the Chernov and the derelict separated by the interference between them.

~I am not the bridge, Pawl. But perhaps you can build one.~

Another harmonic pulse reached the Chernov. The Engineering compensation model reacted automatically. Transporter resolution toward the away team sharpened and remained stable for nearly twelve seconds before interference overwhelmed the lock again.

The technician checked the readings twice before looking toward Pawl. “Commander, that extended the window by several seconds. If we can refine the compensation curve, we may be able to give the transporter rooms a reliable extraction window.”

Pawl moved to an empty station nearby. And started doing work to try to make it more stable. As he worked in engineering, he also worked with Tamm, letting him know what he was doing to help the Entity. in any way he could, even to help protect the being. He sent a message to the bridge, letting the bridge know that the intruder is attempting to take something from the entity Tamm. Pawl attempted to find and contain the intruder. He used his mind to reach out to see where the intruder was in relation to Tamm. Pawl prepared his mind just in case there was an attack from the intruder. “I am going to attempt to do adjustments in real time. As Tamm sends the signal, I will update the program,” Pawl said out loud to himself. Not to anyone in particular, but he made sure his teams knew what he was doing too.
