The USS Manhattan has spent months operating deep within the Delta Quadrant, carrying out Starfleet’s mandate of exploration, scientific research, first contact, and diplomatic observation. Far from Federation space and with no immediate Starfleet support available, the Manhattan has become accustomed to making difficult decisions on its own.

That changes when the ship detects a weak, intermittent distress transmission originating from an unexplored region of space.

The transmission is unmistakably Klingon.

INCOMING TRANSMISSION — KLINGON

«tlhIngan toQDuj Predator ‘oH. DaH rIQ Dujmaj ‘ej boQ wIpoQ.»

Federation Standard Translation:

«”This is the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Predator. Our ship is currently disabled and we are requesting assistance.”»

The signal repeats several times before disappearing.

The Manhattan’s sensors locate the source: a Klingon Bird-of-Prey drifting without propulsion through an otherwise unremarkable region of Delta Quadrant space.

The vessel identifies itself as the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Predator. Its condition is poor. The ship’s propulsion systems are offline, shields are depleted, and significant damage is visible across the hull. Nevertheless, life-sign readings confirm that the vessel still has a functioning crew and that its life-support systems remain operational.

What immediately concerns Captain Daniel “DaVinci” Colter is not simply the presence of a disabled Klingon warship.

It is where the Klingon vessel is located.

The Predator is far beyond any known Klingon sphere of influence. There is no obvious explanation for why a Klingon Bird-of-Prey would be operating in this region of the Delta Quadrant, nor is there any indication of a nearby Klingon task force, colony, outpost, or supply route.

Before committing the Manhattan to the rescue operation, Captain Colter orders his crew to establish communications with the Klingon vessel and conduct a preliminary sensor analysis.

At the same time, the Manhattan formally notifies Starfleet Command.

Captain Colter transmits the Predator’s identification, coordinates, condition, crew status, sensor findings, and the contents of the distress call. He requests instructions from Starfleet Command concerning the appropriate course of action.

The situation presents Starfleet Command with a difficult problem.

The Manhattan is operating independently in the Delta Quadrant. Starfleet cannot dispatch another vessel to the scene in any reasonable amount of time, leaving Captain Colter and his senior staff as the only Federation representatives capable of responding.

Starfleet Command therefore authorizes the Manhattan to render assistance while exercising appropriate caution and maintaining diplomatic protocols.

The Manhattan approaches the disabled Bird-of-Prey.

At first, the situation appears straightforward.

A stranded vessel needs help.

But as the Manhattan begins scanning the Predator, the science and engineering teams discover something unusual.

The damage does not appear consistent with a conventional weapons engagement.

There are unusual energy signatures surrounding the vessel. Some of the damage appears to have occurred simultaneously across multiple systems, while other evidence suggests the ship may have suffered catastrophic systems failures before being attacked—or before entering the region where it was discovered.

The Klingon crew’s story may not explain everything.

And the Predator may not be the only thing drifting through this region of space.

As the Manhattan prepares to assist the Klingons, another transmission comes from the Bird-of-Prey.

This time, the message is not simply a request for assistance.

The Klingons issue a warning.

They tell the Manhattan that whatever disabled the Predator may still be out there.

• Investigate the circumstances that led to the Predator becoming stranded.
• Determine what the Klingons encountered before issuing their warning.
• Recover any available sensor logs, navigational records, or mission data from the Predator.
• Maintain Starfleet’s diplomatic obligations while protecting the Manhattan and its crew.

THE CENTRAL MYSTERY

The mission begins as a simple rescue operation.

It may become something considerably more dangerous.

Why was the Predator here?

What disabled the ship?

Why was it drifting without propulsion?

And most importantly—

What did the Klingons encounter before they sent their distress call?

The USS Manhattan has answered the call for help.

Now it has to determine whether the ship it has rescued is merely a victim…

or a warning.
