In the captain’s quarters, the comm signalled in incoming call. It was from the Alpha Quadrant, specifically the USS Athena. He and Faye hadn’t made plans to talk this week, but this call was rather unexpected.

Far across the galaxy, the comm station in the personal cabin of the Commanding Officer of the USS Manhattan lit up. Alex looked at the screen and then set aside the cello he had been running and answered the call.

When the call connected, Faye grinned. =/\=Yo! How’s it goin’?=/\= she said to Alex, leaning back in her chair. She was in off-duty clothes and wearing one of her many sloganed t-shirts. This one was black with white text that said You couldn’t even handle me if I came with instructions.

Fleet Captain Alexander Cochrane sat, surprisingly, in a chair in his quarters. He was in a light grey Henley-style long sleeved shirt with two buttons at the top. He smiled at the screen, the ice blue eyes gleaming as he saw Faye’s face. “Well, well… she lives!” and he laughed. ” You know I’ve sent you four messages and I haven’t got a single reply back. Keep that up and I’ll have you transferred back to the Delta.” he said with a grin

She burst out laughing, that familiar glint in her eyes appearing. =/\=I have no doubt you could and would do that, but all I will say is that I really don’t think you want to take on Daggum. He’s pretty attached to my being here now.=/\=

“You should know by now, I am sacred of two people in the universe.” Alec replied with a laugh. “And your husband is nothing compared to my mother or my sister.” and he laughed again.

Her expression softened. =/\=As for not responding… I’m sorry. It’s just been… a lot lately, especially after the whirlwind of impromptu time off to go see my parents and sister. But I should know better. I’ll do better, promise.=/\= Her tone was as adamant as it was remorseful.

“It happens, Faye. Now worries.” Alex said supportively. “So to what do I owe the joyous pleasure of this call?”

She folded her arms across the desk and her eyes lit up. =/\=Well, out of all the drama that my little trip to see the fam generated, there were some interesting things that came up. One involves you.=/\= Faye smirked. =/\= My sister Nadine needs to get off Earth, go somewhere and do something. She needs a change. She’s a primary teacher with early childhood qualifications and I was wondering if the Manhattan had room for another teacher. Mom seems certain she’ll pass the security checks, so the only variables in the way are whether there is a need for a teacher, and if you are willing to take on another civilian. I’ve been filling her in on some of the protocol and regulation stuff she’ll have to be aware of and follow.=/\=

Alex was quiet a moment and then said “It just so happens that we do have an opening in the ship’s school. You remember Mrs. Glient? Her husband finally retired and they are moving to Earth. And if your mother says she isn’t a security risk, well… I don’t think we have anything to worry about.” He stared at the vid screen for another long moment and said “All I can say is that if she is selected for the position, I won’t say no of course. And I will put a good word in the right ears if I can. Sound good? No guarantees. But if she makes to the point of my approval, she’ll get the job.”

Faye grinned. =/\=That’s all I’m asking for.=/\= Her expression turned more sombre. =/\=She’s had a lot happen in her personal life, the least of which is finding her mom and finding out she has a sister, awesome that I am,=/\= she said, breaking into a grin. =/\=It’ll be good for her to be elsewhere. I suspect there’s a lot of the family wanderlust in her.=/\= Faye braced an arm on her desk. =/\=Did you know she has never been off Earth as an adult. Her parents adopted her from Alpha Centauri and moved to Earth when she was little. Been on Earth ever since. The Delta Quadrant will be… an experience,=/\= Faye said with a laugh.

“Ah, I see. Typical Calloway genes, then. Don’t do anything by half-measures.” Alex said with a wry smile. ” ’ I haven’t ever been off Terra? Well, I want to travel so I guess I’ll just go the absolute furthest edge of anything we could possibly know about and start there.’ ” and he laughed. He shook his head and said “I swear… the women in your family will be the death of me.” and he laughed again.

Faye laughed.

=/\=Yes, but you die in style see? That’s the difference,”=/\=Faye said with a grin. =/\=At least you can’t say life is boring with us in it.=/\=

“No, it certainly is not.” Alex agreed with a warm smile.

Faye drew in a deep breath. =/\=Okay, so I’ll let her know to get the ball rolling.=/\= She leaned forward. =/\=In the meantime, how are you?=/\=

Alex waved off the question and leaned back and looked up and away from the screen. “I’m fine, you know that. I am doing what I love in a place few of our people have ever seen. It’s never dull, that is certain.” He sighed and looked at his friend, all those many many light years away. “I do miss having you around, though. It’s not often that someone in my position gets to make actual friends.” He leaned forward and then said “So tell me… how is everyone there? I do hope that you will convey my hellos to all of them.”

Faye gave a warm smile and a nod. -/\=They’re good. Dag has settled into being Chief Engineer, and really, things haven’t changed all that much. Mom and Micah are… oh who the hell knows. I’ll be talking to her in a couple of days. Things went suddenly up in the air for them because, get this, she just got settled in as XO and boom, they decommission the ship. I think she’d be miffed if it weren’t for the fact that nothing Intelligence does surprises her. But I don’t know what she’s going to be up to. Shara Calloway, Free Agent, might just be a little bit much for the galaxy to handle,=/\= she said with a fond grin. =/\=Though with Micah with her, it’ll either make it better, or so much worse!=/\= Faye laughed.

Faye leaned in. =/\=I miss you too, Alex. I’d love to say that we’ll see each other soon, but that doesn’t seem too likely for awhile. I guess we’ll just have to make subspace work for us better.=/\=

Alex nodded and then made a blatant attempt to steer the conversation elsewhere. “So tell me more about your sister. What kind of person is she? Do you think she would get along with the rest of the crew? And do you think that she will have problems being so very very far away from everything she has ever known?”

Faye grinned. =/\= Well, she’s an elementary teacher and pretty much what you’d expect from someone who is used to wrangling ten to twelve year olds every day. She’s incredibly patient, stern when she needs to be, not afraid to take the time to explain something. =/\= Her expression softened into a smile. =/\=I mean, you’ve seen her at the wedding- she’s a natural in public, not at all afraid of public speaking . But there’s also something rebellious about her. It’s not my story to tell but she’s gotten into a bit of mischief over the years. Just now she channels into advocacy. She’s really curious, willing to ask questions, show she doesn’t know things.

Nadine is… good, Alex. She’s a good person. I like having her as an older sister. She was wiling to ask about and listen to me explain about my BPD, and she’s been very open about what’s she’s been going through having found her birth parents and a whole entire family she hadn’t been expecting. I think she’ll fit in just fine. And no doubt keep people on their toes, I mean, she is a woman of my mother’s line, so expect the unexpected. Oh! And she paints. Don’t you dare let her get away with not showing you at some point. Really, she’s good. She painted that abstract one I now have of Muir Beach in our quarters here. It was her wedding gift to Dag and I.=/\= Faye shrugged. =/\=Not sure what else to say but I think maybe I said too much?=/\= Faye added with a light laugh.

“You? Never.” Alex said with a smirk.

=/\=That being said, she’s never been off Earth since she was a kid and they moved there from Alpha Centauri. So yeah, it’ll be a massive adjustment. But she needs this. Something exciting. It’s been rough for her the last few years. Gallivanting about the Delta Quadrant might not be something she expected, but so long as she can get messages to her parents on Earth, and keep in touch with Mom, Micah and her bio dad, then yeah, I think she’ll be okay.=/\=

Alex was quiet, even thoughtful, for a long few moments. “Okay, then.” he said with a sense of confirmation. “I’ll put the appropriate calls into the appropriate people. Maybe I can get her application fast-tracked so she won’t have a chance to change her mind.” He gave a Faye a knowing look and said “Because you women are known for being so indecisive.” and he laughed loudly.

Faye laughed. “Uh huh. Unless we’re fully committed to the idea, then best get out of our way.” She broke into a soft smile. “So let’s assume for a moment that this actually happens, promise me you’ll look out for her, yeah? I’ve gotten rather attached to my long-lost sister. Fortunately for you, she’s not the one to throw herself head first into danger. Most be her dad’s genes…” Faye mused, her gaze shifting off to the side. It lasted a moment before she looked back at Alex and smiled deeply. “If you had told the Faye Calloway on that first day you called me to your ready room that I’d have a mom again, a step-dad, a sister and a best friend slash brother, I’d have laughed you out of the room and probably suggested you get a psyc eval. And that’s not even mentioning Uncle Gavin and his family. What a life!”
