Nash stepped up to the console beside Lieutenant Kaia, eyes tracking the live EPS fluctuation pattern across Decks 14 through 18.
“Ensign Edward Nash, reporting for duty, ma’am.”
He tapped the interface once, pulling up a deeper diagnostic layer without waiting for permission—clean, deliberate, precise. His gaze stayed fixed on the data stream rather than the officer beside him.
“Fluctuations aren’t random. Pattern repetition every 6.3 seconds along three adjacent conduits. That points to a relay cascade lag, not isolated damage.”
He shifted the schematic to isolate the affected grid section, highlighting a narrowing corridor of failure points.
“I’ll take Section Two’s lower EPS access first. If the structural integrity field is being stressed by rebound variance, I want eyes on the physical junctions, not just the readouts.”
A brief pause as he reviewed the system response time.
“Permission to proceed to Deck 16 maintenance crawlspace.”

“Welcome to Engineering, Ensign - don’t call me Ma’am,” Kaia turned towards him with a tight smile that didn’t reach her eyes, craning her neck to look up at the human. Only three feet tall, she stood on a small ledge that had been installed in all the consoles to allow her to see onto them.

“We call her Chief!” one of the NE’s called over from nearby.

“And I’d also appreciate if you stayed out of my personal space and didn’t touch my data interfaces without permission, Ensign,” she added, tapping the accessibility device on her wrist to set the interface back to the EPS fluctuation - controls that she couldn’t reach on the actual console. “While initiative is appreciated in noticing these issues, Engineering is a team effort. If you’d bothered to ask before poking around in my interfaces, you’d know that I’ve already sent one of the team down to that deck 16 crawlspace, and was watching the live feed to monitor the effects of her work there.”

“Am I going to have to worry about a rogue engineer, or are you able to work in a team, Ensign?”
