After Mwezi and Kohana left, Bethany turned to her console and first began pulling the meta data out of the files. She was looking for the date of the original file, any modifications/alterations to the file. How many times they had been copied, the trace electronic signatures of those that copied and altered the files, etc.

It was very odd… the file was corrupted. The copy she had of the vid was wholly and utterly useless. Well, not entirely. Her expertise allowed her to trace the source of the corruption back to the original vid. Somehow… someway… someone had modified the original recording while it was being made so that any copy made would look like it transferred over correctly; but when opened would be garbage. The code for the modification would be able to be accessed off the chip in the egg.

Bethany stared at the data, “Tricky, tricky, but not enough.”

=/\=Gadi to Kiernan. Ma’am, I need to speak to you. What’s your location?=/\=

=/\=I’m dealing with the egg. What do you need?=/\= Sara had been careful not to state her location, only she would know where the egg was hidden. She just hoped Gadi had some kind of good news.

Well at least the Captain was dealing with the object of her inquiry. =/\=The egg. Well more specifically the chip inside of it. The copies of the files we have are corrupted. They’ve been tampered with. In order to trace and retrieve the original, I need the files directly from the chip.=/\=

=/\=Understood commander, I’m on my way.=/\= The captain was going to make her journey as quick as possible.

When she arrived, Sara set the egg down in front of Gadi. “Commander, how are you going to access the files without the Admiral’s personal credentials? and are we ready for the heat on our tails the second that thing is activated?” She couldn’t think of many advantages they had, but they hadn’t advertised their cargo yet.

Bethany stood as the CO entered. She grinned, “Getting it open is the easy part. As for the rest, we have an air gapped computer core in the elctronic warfare room. No signal should get out from there unless we allow it.” She motioned to the door. “Care for a field trip?”

“Can I join?” came a voice from behind the CO, as Harry stepped forward. “You should also shut down the other systems in the electronic warfare room; whilst I don’t doubt the core in there is meant to be independent, I’ve found that this ships configuration management isn’t the standard I would like it to be at. You may also want to energise the electronic warfare shielding around the room as well. Better safe than sorry.” he said, with a slightly boyish grin.

Sara didn’t like it. This thing had a habit of getting people killed. But there wasn’t a good way around it. “Let’s do it.” She nodded to the electronic warfare room. “And at the very least, we want that shield up. Thank you for the suggestion Lieutenant Archer.”

Bethany grinned at the engineer and nodded to the captain. “No worries Captain. The shielding is always on unless a command override code is put in to take it down. She led the way to the electronic warfare room and input her security access to unlock the room. She entered, and passing by the main control console she set her combadge down on it. “Might want to leave yours there as well. Otherwise once we go inside, no one will be able to reach you. That way you’ll at least be able to hear the comms.”

Gadi moved over to a large floor to ceiling, floor and roof, cage that buzzed softly. It was a giant faraday cage. She stepped inside and waited for them. Once they had joined her she closed the door and flipped a switch and buzzing increased and a light by the door went from red to green. There was a desk with, what looked like an old fashioned tower PC setup. It had an independent totally disconnected power cell. Bethany sat down and flipped a switch and the machine cycled through its start up procedure. “This computer doesn’t even have the capability to connect to a network or hardwire to another.” She pulled another small device from her pocket, “If you would allow me, captain, I’ll use this to open the egg.”

Harry followed both the CO and COS. Just before entering the room, he took out his engineering tricorder and placed it in a storage locker just outside of the room.

“Can’t be too careful.” he said, making sure there were no other electrical items on him.

As they stepped inside, he checked over the rooms configuration, satisfying himself that all was in order, before watching the Chief of Security proceed.

Gadi grinned, “Feel free to kick the tires, Lt.” The device she was using was a modified tricorder that she had programed to take the last input and make the computer think that information had been input again. Even if the device in the egg was programmed to delete the information, shadows and imprint stayed in the memory. Her tricorder allowed her to basically hack the device and recall that information.

Harry nodded back with a smile. He went across to the standalone computer system that was in the middle of the room, and pressed a rather quaint, mechanical button. The computer sparked to life, booting up into a slightly outdated version of LCARS.

“Remind me to get someone to update this at some point.” He said, as the boot procedure completed.

Gadi chuckled, “Whike I appreciate the offer, there’s no need. The system inside this cage is my own build and programming. It is specifically designed for electronic spy craft and independent cyber security. The programs on it are mine. It looks old, but I promise it is not.” She reached over and grabbed an actual physical keyboard and entered a string of commands that allowed him to do more than just stare at pictures of bunny rabbits.

Harry internally sighed. It was apparent that the Chief of Security was one of those operators who fancied themselves as an engineer. A thought flashed through his mind about putting her on to one of the duty rosters, which amused him, but he quickly switched his thoughts back to the task at hand, to avoid Gadi becoming too aware of his internal amusement.

If Bethany wasn’t so self-contained she’d have sighed, but instead she just grinned and continued with what she was doing.

“Captain, if I could have the chip?” He asked, as he connect up a separate chip reader to the side of the computer, that would only be capable of reading and not writing on to the device. Of course, that wouldn’t stop something in the chip deciding to alter the data when read.

Laila arrived in engineering a little later than she expected. Lieutenant Archer was on comms with the Captain Lieutenant Commander Gadi was there too. Gadi made her nervous, but she stepped beside her, waiting for her or Archer to give her orders on how she should assist them. After Archer got off comms, she said with a smile, “Captain Kiernan said I should come help. Let me know what you would like me to do. I am all yours.”

OOC: Just FYI, we (Gadi, Archer, and Kiernan) are in the electronic warfare room, not main engineering. We’re inside a giant Faraday cage. If that is what you were looking for join us.

Gadi glanced up from inside the cage to where Dacascos was standing on the otherside. “What do you know about Soverign class ships and their potentials to be modified?”

Harry raised an eyebrow at the question, and that it hadn’t been directed at him. Arguably modifying a ship was just a case of having the necessary skills, time and resources, but would depend on what the modification was for.

Bethany looked up when there was no answer. “Come on, we all entered and graduated from the Operations division of the Academy. We have all three departments here. Engineering, Operations, and Security. Surely between the three of us we an postulate some possibilities?”

“Technically, I graduated from the science division.” Sara said with a smile. “But I have some experience with ship design. There are a few key variables. What do you want, how much time do you have, and how much do you care if anyone notices the ship is modified?”

Harry spotted his padd that he had left outside the cage was flashing with a new message. Making his way through the double gate, designed in a way not avoid the faraday effect from being broken, he picked up the padd and read the message.

“Well, if it was a Sovereign-class ship, it hasn’t been registered as missing.” he stated. “All of them are either decommissioned, destroyed or on active service.” he continued, before pausing.

Bethany shrugged, “Doesn’t mean that one listed as decommissioned or destroyed wasn’t stolen. It’s happened before.”

“Are we sure it was actually a Sovereign-class ship, and not some form of holographic image?” He had heard about the use of holoprojectors and sensor decoys to portray a vessel as a different one. Similar to the principles of a cloaking device, but with a replacement image.

Gadi shook her head, “Nope. But I am hoping getting access to the data on this chip, and analyzing it will she’d some further light on what is real and what was smoke and mirrors.”

“So,” she said as she worked on the egg, “tactically speaking, the Sovereign-class originally had twelve phaser arrays throughout the ship’s hull. Seven dorsal phaser arrays were located on the primary hull, one extending around the saucer section. Six smaller arrays covered the aft dorsal firing arcs and were located along the aft portion of the saucer section, above the main shuttlebay.

“Four ventral phaser arrays were located on the primary hull. A single phaser array was located along the ventral section of the engineering hull. During the refit, four were added to the trailing edges of the warp nacelle pylons.

“Originally her configuration mounted five torpedo launchers. The main was located on the ventral portion of the saucer on a turret and was supplemented by one twin-tube launcher, forward and aft at the bottom of the secondary hull. The refit added five more tubes: three on the dorsal saucer section as well as two on the secondary hull.”

She looked up, “So if this is a stolen Sovereign-class ship before the refit, we know what they could upgrade to. If it was after, we’ll that is a matter of ingenuity and available resources. And we aren’t limited to Federation tech. Anything that could be obtained on the black market. Also based on available financial resources and time.”

Harry nodded. “Although that’s quite a bit of work,” he mused. “It would be far easier to get any other ship, but it almost feels like they’re wanting people to believe it was an attack by Starfleet. If that was the case, they wouldn’t want to be using non-Starfleet weapons, that would leave a signature.”

Just then a call came through for Harry on the comm.

=^= Caldwell to Archer. Chief, we’ve hit a bit of a dead end here. The recording is completely corrupted and we can’t get access to the data. There doesn’t seem to be anyway around it unfortunately. Have you had any luck on your end?=^=

After a few moments of fiddling and tricking the egg’s digital inputs, Bethany managed to get the egg open and remove the chip. She took it over to the isolated computer console and slipped it into the port. “Alright, let’s see what secrets this can tell us.”
