Harry sat in his quarters, a pot of Fortnum and Mason’s Queen Anne blend tea sat on a nearby table. He had just come back from the mess hall having finished in Main Engineering. He still hadn’t quite got accustomed to not have defined shifts, but had settled into a routine that meant he still managed to get some time to himself. As much as he enjoyed the company of the crew, sometimes it was both nice and necessary to lock himself away and work on a problem.

Normally, that type of problem was a technical problem that he would explore, and then look to put into practice at some point. This was slightly different; at the heart of it was a member of his team who Starfleet Engineering had ostracised because of a series of events that didn’t seem to add up. Earlier that day he had requested Starfleet Engineering to send all files on any warp core malfunction that had occurred which had either resulted in, or almost resulted in, a catastrophic reaction that Lisa had described. He kept is search broad for two reasons: to see if anything similar had occurred on any other Starfleet vessels; and to make the search look innocuous and not targeted against the McKoy.

Sitting down at his desk, he started to pour over the data.

The computer took a moment to load the requested information. There were, surprisingly several hits that came back. One was obviously the McKoy but that was given and Lisa had already explained the events surrounding that.

There was an incident on the USS Semitone which, at a glance, looked similar but the Chief Engineer had suffered a psychosis and thought that insects were contaminating the warp core and so he had attempted to overload it.

Two hits that were very very close to the McKoy, one was the Entrepid and the other the Salvadore. Both had warp core issues and both occurred during upgrades.

“Curious,” he muttered to himself as he placed a tea strainer on to a cup, and started to pour the tea through it. Putting the strainer to one side, he added a splash of milk.

Focussing back to the display on his desk, he started to compare the data between the McKoy, Entrepid, and Salvador to see if there were any common observations in the data. He first set the computer to work checking the power distribution curves of the warp cores. Knowing it would take a few minutes, he started to read through the details of the upgrades to see if there were any patterns.

The computer whirled away sifting through the different files looking for patterns in the power distributions of the warp cores. As Harry began reading and comparing the upgrades he would note that they were all of a similar style. There were minor variations but all had the same pattern. Each was an upgrade to the efficiency of the warp core and each promised prolonged time above warp 9. The upgrades involved changes to the Dilithium . If it worked it would be a significant breakthrough. On each occasion the warp core destabilised and the safety protocols had been removed. The Entrepid was destroyed as a result, the Salvadore required a warp core injection. A keen eye would note that important details had been left out of the reports on each. Each time the Chief Engineer had been blamed and removed- except the Entrepid who was just blamed and not removed..... because she was dead.
