Kaano Idos

Idos is a deeply spiritual man that has a close relationship to the Prophets, that he treasures.

He’s rather small in stature, being just 1.75 meters tall and being quite thin, much to the dismay of his mother. Both of his parents are still living, his father working as a healer in their village. His mother received her formal training from the Bajoran Medical Academy and often transported around the planet serving as a surgeon. Idos’ three older sisters all carry medical degrees as well, with his sister Metna serving in Starfleet as Chief Medical Officer on her ship.

The Kaano family have been healers and doctors for many generations, going back far before the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. With every new child born, it’s usually just accepted that the child will spend their early years assisting their family members in the duties of caring for the sick and injured. Finally, coming of age, it’s expected for the young adult to move into whichever area of public health interests them the most. Being a simple herbalist that eases aches and pains of farmers in the field, to studying at the greatest universities and becoming doctors, all are respected and admired by the family for dedicating themselves to the service of helping other people.

Idos didn’t have the dream of becoming a healer or a doctor. The little free time he was given was spent in the temple in his hometown in the Navot Province. He admired the great, booming voices of the Vedeks and Ranjen as they spoke the words of the Prophets. He loved hearing interpretations of the ancient texts that he’d never heard before. He saw the peace that these great people could give to their congregation, and coming from a family that served others before themselves, he wanted to serve the Prophets and, in turn, serve his people in that way.

His desire was not accepted when he asked his family for permission to being Prylar training. News of his wish to not join the medical field flooded through to all corners of the family, many of which wrote letters stating that his desired field was honorable, but that he should reconsider and join the family practice.

This left Idos a bit distant from his family for a time. No one was outwardly rude or treated him poorly, but he could tell that they didn’t treat him quite the same as they used to before he voiced his desire. He became lonely at that time, speaking less and less with his family. Going to temple didn’t elate him as it once had, knowing that his family disapproved of what he truly wished to do with his life.

Finally, he resolved himself to the family trade. He didn’t like the disconnect that had formed between his family, and he decided that serving others sometimes meant not getting to do exactly what you wanted to do yourself. Upon finishing his youth schooling with high marks, he did his undergraduate studies at the University of Mussila and was then accepted to the Bajoran Medical Academy, just as his mother was. He finished his doctoral program as a salutatorian.

Still feeling disconnected from his family, he decided he would take his medical talents into Starfleet, with the plan of serving five or six years. A length that most would consider an honorable tour of duty, and hopefully earn back the respect of his family doing so. When his Starfleet career ends, he plans to return home to Bajor and begin his religious training to help heal the souls of people, instead of their bodies, and hopefully his family would fully accept him once again.
