Coming from a family of healers and doctors, many of which were of advanced years and lived through the entirety of the Bajoran Occupation, the importance of mental health, in conjunction with physical health, was drilled into him from his earliest years. There weren’t many of his family that went into the psychological field, but the few that did were always well respected for their choice. With those teachings in mind, Idos’ order to report to the ship’s counselor was one of the less anxious appointments that were required of him.
While training at Starbase 113, Idos had availed himself of the rare opportunity to meet with a few of the remarkably talented counselors that served aboard the station. He made it part of his routine to speak to one of the counselors bi-monthly to keep his mind in as good of shape as he could. There were countless studies showing the stress that higher education could put on someone, and Idos was adamant about keeping himself in the best shape that he could. Be it physical, mental, or spiritual.
With the much smaller crew complement of the Challenger, aside from other cadets, he assumed the majority of his mental healthcare would come from the ship’s head counselor. He very much hoped they would share an easy and friendly rapport.
As he always did before meeting someone new, Idos closed his eyes for a moment, and prayed to the Prophets for strength, before he tapped the button for the door chime outside Counselor Halcyone’s office.
“Please come in.” A soft and friend voice came from behind the door. Pilar had been expecting the cadet to show and had already prepared the space.
In her office was a table near the window with two chairs, where she did her counseling sessions, had an assortment of fruit and croissants as well as water and coffee already prepared. She stood from her desk, walked over to the table with her PaDD in her hand and said, “Please help yourself. I just want to confirm Idos is your surname, correct?”
Halcyone, Counselor
Idos stepped gingerly into the office, taking a quick look around. As with all the offices of people in the psychological field, this one felt inviting and comfortable.
Politely declining the offered food and drink, walked over to the table and stood before it and the counselor.
“Thank you for making time in your schedule to see me. As for my name, Kaano is my surname and Idos is my personal, but I don’t mind being called either. Sometimes it’s nice being called Idos. Being around my family and asking for ‘Dr. Kaano’ would get about fifteen people responding.” He smiled sheepishly at his poor joke.
“During my trip here from Starbase 133, I didn’t have a chance to look at the crew manifest. Usually I like to come a lot more prepared for my meetings, so I beg your pardon on that front. Have you been serving on the Challenger long?”
One of his human friends from the Starbase had told him, one of the best ways of getting a comfortable conversation going was to ask questions of the person you were speaking to. He didn’t think this would work for too long, seeing as the counselor was usually the one doing the asking, but he’d take the chance while he had it.
