Main Sim: Science Annex

Snip

6. Biology Brief
Classification: Starfleet Intelligence Brief
Confidence: Limited / requires in-theater observation

Available biological information regarding the permanent population of Karthos Drift is incomplete. Existing intelligence suggests that prolonged residence within the Drift may produce observable biological consequences associated with environmental exposure, inconsistent nutrition, narcotics use, and limited access to consistent medical care.

Priority areas for scientific investigation include:
- Indicators of long-term malnutrition
- Presence and identification of narcotics
- Physiological effects associated with prolonged environmental exposure
- Possible environmental adaptations among long-term Drift inhabitants
- Biological assessment of individuals recovered from trafficking operations

7. Xenology Brief
Classification: Starfleet Intelligence Brief
Confidence: Limited / requires direct cultural observation

Available intelligence cautions against treating Karthos Drift solely as a criminal settlement. Although organized crime exercises substantial influence throughout the region, the Drift supports a permanent civilian population and has developed social structures beyond the syndicates themselves.

Relevant populations include:
- Dock workers
- Miners
- Merchants
- Families
- Children

8. Chemistry Brief
Classification: Starfleet Intelligence Brief
Confidence: Limited / local sampling required

Karthos Drift’s extensive mining, refining, manufacturing, and illicit commercial activity creates a chemically complex environment. Existing intelligence identifies several areas of potential scientific interest:
- Industrial pollutants
- Explosive compounds
- Synthetic narcotics
- Ore-processing byproducts
- Environmental contamination

9. Geology Assessment
Classification: Established Starfleet Assessment
Confidence: Established broad composition / detailed mapping incomplete

Existing geological surveys establish that the Karthos Drift contains significant concentrations of:
- Duranium-rich ore
- Tritanium veins
- Native verterium-based mineral structures

Detailed geological mapping throughout the Drift remains incomplete. Priority areas for further scientific investigation include:
- Mineral concentrations
- Stable tunnels
- Hidden excavation routes
- Abandoned mines

NOTE Existing data is sufficient to establish the Drift’s broad mineral composition but should not be considered a reliable representation of the location or current condition of individual geological and artificial structures.

10. Subspace Brief
Classification: Starfleet Intelligence Brief
Confidence: Limited / requires in-theater experimentation

Existing assessments confirm that environmental conditions within the Karthos Drift produce subspace signal scattering. Associated effects include communications delays, transporter interference, sensor shadowing, and inconsistent remote observations.

Priority areas for scientific investigation include determining whether improved understanding of local subspace conditions can increase:
- Communications reliability
- Transporter fidelity
- Sensor resolution

SUBJECT: Karthos Drift — Science Intelligence Synopsis
CLASSIFICATION: Departmental Intelligence Analysis

Captain,

My analysis of the available Starfleet Intelligence assessments indicates that the Karthos Drift should be considered a highly dynamic environment in which navigational, sensor, communications, transporter, biological, and industrial hazards overlap.

The Drift consists of a dense and continuously changing asteroid environment containing significant duranium, tritanium, and native verterium-based mineral deposits. Gravitational interactions, collisions, mining operations, and industrial traffic continually alter local conditions. Historical geological and navigational information therefore cannot be assumed to accurately represent present conditions. Locally generated temporary orbital drift charts are likely to provide the most effective means of navigating less-traveled areas, although their approximately thirteen-minute useful period will require precise timing.

Wolverine’s long-range sensors should remain operational, but reliability will vary considerably. Mineral concentrations, asteroid mass, ionized particulates, gravimetric instability, subspace scattering, and industrial activity can produce sensor shadowing, duplicate echoes, disappearing contacts, positional discrepancies, and obscured thermal signatures. No single calibration is expected to compensate for these effects. Significant contacts should therefore be independently verified whenever possible.

Subspace scattering additionally creates communications delays and transporter interference. Science should continuously map local subspace, gravimetric, and environmental conditions to determine whether localized compensation can improve communications, transporter fidelity, sensor resolution, and navigational predictions.

Physical hazards include asteroid collisions, gravimetric shear, industrial radiation, plasma venting, mining explosives, abandoned reactors, decompressed tunnels, contaminated life-support systems, industrial pollutants, ore-processing byproducts, and potentially hazardous synthetic compounds. Abandoned mines and excavation networks may provide concealed routes or locations, but existing records cannot reliably establish their current stability.

Available biological and xenological intelligence is limited. The Drift contains a permanent civilian population—including miners, dock workers, merchants, families, and children—and should not be regarded exclusively as a criminal settlement. Long-term inhabitants may exhibit effects from environmental exposure, malnutrition, narcotics, contamination, and inconsistent medical care. Any individuals recovered from trafficking operations should receive appropriate biological and toxicological assessment.

Overall Assessment: The Karthos Drift offers natural concealment, but that concealment applies equally to Wolverine and potential threats. Science cannot guarantee normal advance warning or sensor accuracy within the Drift. Continuous local observation, redundant verification, and close coordination between Science, Flight Control, Operations, Engineering, Medical, and Tactical will therefore be essential throughout the operation.
