It was the first time that Mike or Revna were having someone important from the colony visiting their new home. Caitlyn had had Governer Hyrushi here, but they had kept that very quiet for Caitlyn. She had been nervous enough. They had had Hyrushi over because Caitlyn had invited him, and so they hadn’t made a big deal about it.

Revna was hoping to keep this visit the same. Lady Duroc, Dr. Jal’na, was coming as a medical professional. She had only told Kirsten because she was the clan’s doctor. She didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Nothing was wrong with Revna. She just wanted to complete her physical therapy that had never been finished adequately. Really, she was looking forward to it.

Revna, Lady McKenzie

Grul pulled the slider up to the check point at the edge of the McKenzie-Edman land. It was vast and stunning the amount of life on the once barren planet. They went through the process of being cleared. They had no weapons, something that drove her security crazy, but she refused to have them when she visited patients. It had been non-negotiable for her. Everyone Urg had assigned to her, was more than capable without a weapon.

The slider came to a stop amid something that looked similar to the small village she’d grown up in. There was a blacksmith, live stock, fighters training, and a huge central house. She stepped out and was greeted immediately by Revna. “Revna, how are you feeling after our last session?”

Jal’na, Lady Duroc

“A bit tired the next day, but in a good way. I’ve been doing the exercises you gave me.” Jal’na was there to see what Revna did all day and help her find ways to complete the work and make herself stronger. So she took Jal’na through a typical day of what she did. Jal’na made several suggestions and corrections to how she was doing things. Before she left, she gave Revna several different exercises to do.

Revna, Lady McKenzie

Jal’na watched Revna as she moved through the clan. Their land was huge and so many people. Jal’na was overwhelmed by the number of people in the embassy, and this was at least 4 times that, probably more. She had a new found respect for Revna. Lady McKenzie was in the thick of it too. Building, working, training, crafting. There was no time for her to rest.

As Revna worked, Jal’na worked beside her, but spent time observing as well. The work came after she corrected what Revna was doing. Demonstrating, correcting, and optimizing. “The other thing, I want you to take a break regularly. Maximum of an hour of work and then stop for an hour. You’ll do more damage by exhaustion from pushing too hard.”

The woman who had been introduced as Ragna, Revna’s younger sister, laughed. “Good luck with that. We’ve been telling her that, but she doesn’t know how to listen.” Jal’na laughed, “Well I can order her, but if she won’t listen to you, just call me.” Jal’na had seen it plenty. She understood it too.

Jal’na, Lady Duroc

Revna laughed, “Alright, I get it. But there is just so much that needs to get done.” She knew she pushed too hard, it wasn’t in her to sit back while others did all the work. But she knew it wouldn’t do anyone any good if she ended up unable to work. “I’ll behave.” Her younger sister snorted and rolled her eyes in disbelief. “I’ll tell Mike on you,” she threatened.

Revna walked Jal’na back to her slider. “At the hospital next week?”

Jal’na shook her head, “I’ll come here, I think it is more beneficial for you. If that is alright with you.” They agreed and the physical therapist left.

Revna, Lady McKenzie

A week later, Jal’na was back. Checking onto the McKenzie-Edman lands was swift this time. She made these house calls for the benefit of her patients, but the truth was that Jal’na had been thinking about coming since she left the previous week. Revna was an interesting patient. She pressed hard, never complained, and listened to Jal’na’s instructions and warnings. But she could see the fire in Revna’s eyes. The frustration that she worked equally hard to control so she didn’t stunt her recovery. The strength of will it took.

The women of this clan fascinated her. No matter how young or how old, big, small, fit, or challenged, they all trained, they all fought, they all defended. Jal’na had always believed that every warrior was worthy. That no injury made them unworthy or useless. The McKenzie-Edmans embodied that with perfection. It called to Jal’na’s soul in a way nothing else did. The women practiced with the men, but they didn’t fight like them. They fought their own way. They fought together in lines. The men did too, which was so strange to Jal’na. Klingons often fought in bands, but not with coordination. They went in together, but once battle began it was each warrior for himself, one-to-one.

Working with Revna, she got to see how they trained up close and personal as she coached Revna how to adjust her movements, add exercises and stretches that would help her regain her strength and dexterity to work with the women around her.

Jal’na, Lady Duroc

So it went for the next few sessions. It was Ragna that approached Jal’na. She had seen the way Lady Duroc watched them practice. The interest and the flash of uncertainty. Ragna had seen it many many times. She only caught it though because she was so familiar with it. “You should join in rather than just watch, Lady Duroc.” It wasn’t said as diplomatically as Revna would have suggested, but it seemed to be the right approach with Jal’na. Matter of fact and no expectation, no fawning. The lady nodded, “Perhaps next time.”
