Najma raised her hand, eager to pose her questions. “Commissioner Karlson, thank you for addressing our inquiries. Given the gravity of Dashiel Jones’ death and the potential security risks involved, can you elaborate on why the government is being so guarded about the investigation details? Is there a specific reason for the lack of transparency?”

Her voice was calm, but underneath, Najma’s curiosity burned fiercely. She needed to understand the motives behind the officials’ reticence. As she awaited a response, her eyes flickered between Commissioner Karlson and Deputy Chief of Staff Kasiri Darae, searching for any subtle reactions that might betray their true intentions.
“And regarding the involvement of Lieutenant Governor Dasca with the deceased,” Najma continued, her tone measured, “while I understand the need for privacy during such a sensitive time, can you clarify if there are any potential conflicts of interest that might influence the investigation? Is there a reason for the Lieutenant Governor’s absence from the public eye beyond personal grief?”

Her questions hung in the air, the room momentarily silent, she could feel the eyes on her as she awaited her answers from the officials.

Joseph didn’t react hastily, he’d been answering press questions for nearly thirty years. He had to remind himself not to smile at the reporters, neither his disarming grandfatherly smile nor his cold and unnerving smile used during interrogations and negotiations. He also reminded himself to not use belittling language he might have used against a member of the Government, Starfleet, or even his own Police Force. His face remained a stoic screen betraying no emotion, not even a flicker, just a calm gaze “We do not release any information regarding Criminal Investigations that could potentially harm it. We will release information if we deem it important for either public safety or if it could assist with the investigation, at this early stage we will only be providing the necessary information and the assurances that the full resources available to us are being utilized” His tone was even, calm. He treated the question as if it were natural even if he considered it naive at best.

Kasiri would let Karlson deal with the investigation related questions, but the one about Dasca’s absence caused her to quirk a brow. “Given, as you put it, her personal grief, and the fact that there are many components of her work that are affected, I would think that would keep her sufficiently busy, don’t you?” Not to mention that Dasca was not required to parade around everyone to show them she was ‘fine’. It hadn’t been that long since the whole incident with her ex, surely no one is expecting her to just waltz around here like nothing has happened?

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

Tovar attentively absorbed Deputy Chief of Staff Darae’s response, his curiosity sparked by the underlying implications. This newfound information intrigued him, prompting a mental note to collaborate with the other reporter for a comprehensive understanding. Raising his hand, he sought further clarification.

“Deputy Darae, your explanation regarding Lieutenant Governor Dasca’s personal grief and professional obligations sheds light on her current situation, we all mourn with her and hope she finds solace in a swift investigation. However, could you elaborate on the specific aspects of her work that are impacted by these circumstances? Furthermore, considering the common occurrence where murders are perpetrated by individuals known to the victim, family, friends… loved ones…” He let the comment linger before pushing on “how do you perceive this dynamic influencing the ongoing investigation?” he wasn’t asking outright if she was being considered a suspect but the underlying question was there, and the response was on record. He waited patiently.

As Darae responded to her question, Najma couldn’t shake off a feeling of dissatisfaction. While Darae’s explanation seemed reasonable on the surface, Najma’s instincts told her there was more to the story. She was going to ask another question and dig deeper into Lieutenant Governor Dasca’s recent activities, work, and public appearances. However, this action was interrupted by Michaels, follow-up question.
Najma didn’t know his name yet, but she couldn’t help but be impressed by his astuteness. She flashed him a quick smile, acknowledging his insightful inquiry, before turning her attention back to Darae. The reporter’s question hung in the air, subtly implying a deeper suspicion without outright accusing anyone. She liked his style and decided after the conference she would approach him and introduce herself.

Najma narrowed her eyes slightly at Darae, her curiosity piqued even further as she awaited their response. She observed the Deputy Chief of Staff closely, searching for any subtle cues or hesitations that might betray the true nature of Lieutenant Governor Dasca’s involvement in the ongoing investigation.

Joseph almost frowned at the question, the reporters were already forming a narrative with limited information. He stepped in before the Chief of Staff could answer “I believe that is a question that should be directed at the Starfleet press secretary” He slowly turned his gaze to Michaels “I’d also remind members of the press that Mr. Darae is not a criminal investigative expert and cannot be expected to answer questions regarding how the investigation will be influenced by the political reality” There was an edge in his tone, it was purely a fabrication to draw attention. The younger reporters could be distracted by the apparent loss of decorum “I’d also remind the members of the press about my standing on insinuations and their detrimental effects” That drew a few grimaces from those in the room who had received a stern lecture from the elderly Police Commissioner on the matter “We will not be commenting on who is and who is not on the suspect list nor it’s size.”

Namja snickered at the response and it was noticeable. If they didn’t want them insinuating anything, then it would be in their best interest to give them relevant information and not string them along. Joseph’s vague responses and the Chief of Staff’s careful deflections left her with more questions than answers. It was clear they were withholding information, but why? What were they trying to hide?

He interlocked his fingers and looked from one end to the other clearly not opening the floor for another question or rebuttal “I feel I must remind the members of the press that it has not been a full day yet since this investigation began.” This time there was no hint of harshness, he was pulling the edge back and changing the direction “You want answers and are entitled to them but not to the detriment of the investigation.”

Commissioner Karlson

Kasiri nodded and focused on the part of Michaels’ question she could answer. “As far as the Lieutenant Governor’s work being impacted, clearly the largest priority currently is the negotiations with the Vren. Mr. Jones was heavily involved and the Executive has been working very closely with him and Ambassador Mathis to ensure things go as smoothly as they can. The welcome gala two days ago is a wonderful example of this. Obviously this tragedy will stall the forthcoming talks but my understanding from both the Federation and Vren Ambassadors is that they will be delayed only by a couple days or so, to allow everyone a chance to regroup. Ambassador Mathis is very insistent that this assignment to Oed and securing long term peace with the Vren was very important to Mr. Jones and he would not want negotiations to stall because of this tragedy.”

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

Tovar leaned in, his voice carrying an edge of urgency as he posed his question, “So, Deputy Chief Darae, with the delay in negotiations being a direct result of this tragic incident, can we infer that the delay itself could serve as a potential motive for the murder. He fixed Kasiri with an expectant gaze, his demeanor assertive as he pressed for further insight into the situation.

She quirked a brow. “As the Police Commissioner so aptly put it, I’m not qualified to comment on the investigation, nor would I interfere in anyway. But what we all just keep in mind is that the key members of the negotiations are all on the same page that they will not allow anyone to use this event to derail such important talks. Everyone must remember that the Vren are still facing a crisis and we have promised to help however we can. That has not changed.”

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

“We have time for one last question” Joseph said, it wasn’t really his place but the Deputy was still young and had never taken part of a press conference like this before, it was time to end this.

Commissioner Karlson

As a reporter, it was her duty to continue to probe, Najma couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a bigger story here, one that went beyond just the murder investigation. She listened as Tovar Michaels raised his next question. Joseph’s reaction was telling, almost as if he was trying to redirect the conversation away from something sensitive.
When it seemed like the press conference was coming to a close, Najma raised her hand and spoke at the same time, “Commissioner Karlson, can you confirm whether the security breach at Starfleet Labs is being investigated as part of this case? And if so, how do you believe it may be connected to the murder?”

Joseph cocked his head to one side, a curious expression on his face, the question was unexpected “As of right now they are not being investigated as the same crime” He leaned forward “I think we’ll permit a more salient question” The word a clear dig at the disconnected question”

Commissioner Karlson

But Commissioner,” she insisted, her voice steady despite her anxiety, “Surely you must see the significance of the security breach at Starfleet Labs. The public has a right to know if there are safety and security risks as well as how someone can infiltrate a lab that is supposed to be as secure as Starfleet..... Is there a possibility that they could be connected in some way?”

Civilian Moreino

“Asked and answered” He rebuked the reporter “The breach at the Starfleet Labs is being investigated by Starfleet Security. If Starfleet believes that there is a public concern they shall announce so, I will not speak about events that I do not personally oversee, and regarding any connection” He leaned forward “You seem adamant that there should be one, is there information you have that should have been shared with either the police or Starfleet?” He asked his tone unserious.

Commissioner Karlson

Taking a deep breath to steady herself, Najma squared her shoulders and met Commissioner Karlson’s gaze. “Commissioner,” she began, “I understand that Starfleet Security is handling the investigation, but with all due respect, the public’s concern extends beyond the immediate scope of this breach. We’re talking about a breach at one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the galaxy. If there are vulnerabilities there, it’s not just a matter for Starfleet—it’s a matter for every citizen in this colony.”

She paused, gathering her thoughts before continuing. “And regarding any potential connections between this breach and other recent security incidents, it’s not about what information I have personally. It’s about the need for transparency and accountability. The public deserves to know if there’s a pattern here, if there are systemic issues that need to be addressed. That’s not just my opinion—it’s my duty as a journalist, and I won’t be deterred from seeking the truth.”

“And again the Commissioner was quite clear that he does not speak for Star Fleet on Star Fleet matters.” came a voice form the side of the room and Governor Hyrushi walked in and stepped next to Karlson. “Ms. Moreino, it is indeed your duty as journalist, as it is for all journalists on Oed V, to seek out and report the truth. Truth is far different than speculation… which is what you are positing. Speculation has no place in this forum, although genuine inquiry does. If you have a concern as to the errant access granted to a lab that contained no hazardous or toxic materials at the time of the breach, and which was addressed immediately by Star Fleet personnel with the individual being detained and then actually granted access as the issue was a simple administrative error in permissions; then you should be asking the Chief of Security at Star Fleet about that. However one would think there were more… pressing… issues to inquire about.” and he fixed his ebony eyes directly on her. “Now, then… please ask what questions you have without trying to ‘make’ news. We have enough of it today to go around, I think.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Joseph was both grateful and chagrined at the Governor’s appearance, having a diplomat come to give answers was good but the governor shouldn’t need to get involved in such affairs.

Hyrushi felt Joseph’s reticence, but simply inclined his head to him.

Najma smiled as she spoke the man as he seemed to appear out of nowhere. “Governor Hyrushi, it’s a pleasure to finally see you in person. I appreciate your clarification, and I assure you that my intention is not to sensationalize or speculate…although I can only speculate and form my theories until I have some answers. My concern and I believe the concern of many citizens here on Oed V, is rooted in ensuring the safety and security of this colony.”

She glanced briefly around the room, meeting the eyes of those present before returning her attention to the governor and commissioner. “While I understand that the immediate breach may have been an administrative error, it does raise questions about the overall security protocols in place. I mean there was a break-in at a supposedly secure facility now someone is dead. As you mentioned, Governor, genuine inquiry is essential, I believe the public must understand how such errors occur and what measures are being taken to prevent them in the future. So then, why is Starfleet not present here, at this conference, to answer questions? I have many for them.” Is Oed law enforcement working with Starfleet to investigate Jones’ death?”

“Although Starfleet is involved in the Governance of this Colony this Press conference was called for to inform the public of a murder investigation not to answer political inquires on unrelated matters.” Joseph said before anyone else could answer “This investigation will be conducted in cooperation between all primary investigative bodies currently present on Oed” He answered.

Najma paused briefly before continuing. “Furthermore, recent security incidents across the colony have understandably heightened concerns among the populace. While I do not wish to jump to conclusions, I believe it’s important to explore any potential connections or patterns that may exist. This is not about creating panic or spreading fear but about demanding transparency and accountability within our government. After all, these incidents are happening within the government and Starfleet.”

“You will have to be more specific than just ‘recent security incidents across the colony’, Ms. Moreino.” Hyrushi said. “Again… generalities and sensationalistic speculation are the purview of tabloid reporters and paparazzi; not true journalists.”

She straightened her posture, her gaze steady as she addressed both the governor and the commissioner. “So, with your permission, I would like to ask Chief of Security at Star Fleet about the specific measures being implemented to enhance security protocols at the facility and any insights they can provide regarding the recent incidents. I believe this information will not only reassure the public but also demonstrate your commitment to addressing any vulnerabilities and ensuring the safety of this colony.”

Hyrushi looked at her a moment and then shook his head slightly. “Ms. Moreino, you appear to be a fully grown adult capable of making an appointment. You dont need my permission to make a comm call.” he said.

“I wasn’t aware that was an option but thank you for informing me it is, Governor.”

“And so this comes to an end” Joseph stood up “Ms. Moreino, you have had quite enough time in the spotlight” He rebuked the young reporter “You can direct any questions for Starfleet to Starfleet.” He raised a hand forgoing any follow-up “We will have another conference when there is a need” He stood up, with a hand gesture he muted the micraphones and leaned in to whisper to the Governor “It was one final question four questions ago and none have been on the issue at hand, I won’t waste time building someone’s career” He said in a low tone looking at the crowd for a moment then turning back to the Governor his expression grim as if he was angry, an affectation for the crowd “I’m going to storm out, apologies in advance, take the opportunity to rebuke me if necessary” he used another hand gesture to unmute the sound system.

“Not necessary, but understood.” Kenzo said before the mics went live.

Najma felt a surge of defiance as Joseph dismissed her with his condescending words. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, knowing that would only fuel his perception of her as a naive young reporter. Instead, she maintained her composure, though her grip on her pen tightened.
As Joseph spoke to the Governor in a low tone, Najma’s ears perked up, catching his muttered words about not wasting time building someone’s career. She bristled at the implication that she was merely seeking attention or advancement in her profession. Her career aspirations were secondary to her commitment to uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable.

“Commissioner Joseph,” she called out, her tone cutting through the tension in the room. “I understand your frustration, but let’s not forget I am allowed to bring up whatever I think is important. We’re here to address the concerns of the public on how Jones’s murder is being investigated and other events that could be connected to it, and that includes asking the tough questions, even if they make some uncomfortable.”
She locked eyes with Joseph, her gaze challenging him to acknowledge her presence and the validity of her inquiries. She wouldn’t be silenced or brushed aside, not when there were important issues at stake.

“Earlier this morning a man was murdered, someone young and full of life. Someone with hopes and dreams and a life of their own. Murdered in our city, on our colony. That comes first, not the political intrigue, not the blabber about how things will be performed and by whom and how it will relate to governance. What comes first is the victim, Dash Jones” Joseph intoned his voice so that it was heard easily across the room even without the sound amplifiers “In the decade since I first arrived on this colony time each murder has been treated the same as this one will be, given our full attention until the perpetrator has been apprehended.” He looked between each reporter in the room “I know the citizens of Oed and they know me, public concerns will be addressed, gaps in security will be tightened and this murder will be investigated by the most experienced Investigators we have. And those who live here know that Oed isn’t Earth, Vulcan, Tellar Prime, or Andor. Paradise is a long way away and Oedians are made of sterner stuff” His speech had two intentions, to give the other reporters something to write about and to direct any potential political fallout to him specifically. He then turned on his heel and walked away. Giving the Governor a respectful nod as he left.

Commissioner Karlson

Hyrushi followed him off the stage, but stopped just before exiting the room. He looked at Moreino and said “First press conferences in a new place can be difficult, Ms. Moreino. Perhaps a talk with some of your peers in the press corps will allow you some perspective on the differences that exist in how the goverent and press operate together here on Oed versus many other places. I look forward to our next conversation.” and he turned and headed towards the exit.

Hyrushi, Governor

“Sure. But this is not my first rodeo....so… I know what I am doing here.” She said as she began to gather her things.”

Hyrushi’s appearance was a surprise to even here. Great. Well, the man knew how to deal with people, so she was grateful for his appearance. Things were in flux and she was doing her best, but she had never been the one in public. Kasiri had always been behind the scenes and she was fine with that. But at least for the time begin she would have to adapt.

As the press conference broke up, Darae gathered her items and also headed for the exit.

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

Najma watched as Hyrushi and Joseph left the stage, leaving her standing there, feeling a mix of frustration and determination. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes at Hyrushi’s patronizing comment about her first press conference. Did he think she was clueless? She knew how to handle herself, thank you very much.

“Perspective on the differences, huh?” Najma muttered under her breath as she gathered her notes and belongings. She wasn’t about to let these officials intimidate her or push her aside. She did care about the cliques they had going on, She was here to do her job, to uncover the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it made them.

As she made her way towards the exit Najma smirked. “Oh, I know. But I’m not afraid of a little slime.” And headed out of the room, her mind already racing with plans for her next move. She may not have gotten the answers she wanted today, but she wasn’t about to give up. Not now, not ever.
