Unsurprisingly, Mathis didn’t give away anything by her expression as she read other than an air of focus. Even her emotions were carefully controlled, though there was a thread of understanding and acceptance as she read, and even a tiny hint of resignation towards the end. Never surprise though.

Setting the PaDD down, Mathis looked between Dasca and Hyrushi and nodded. “Consider it done. The Council doesn’t meet again for a couple weeks, but this will be passed to the Speaker in advance. Undoubtedly, it will be given to the Security Council and the President as well, but it will be the Speaker who reads it formally on the floor.”

Jeanette inhaled deeply. “I… expected something like this and I understand your position. I suspect they will too, but we can only wait to see what sort of response it generates.” The timing was also important. “I will submit this to the Speaker immediately so that it’s in play well in advance of the Vren arrival. That will communicate the necessary seriousness that it is due.”

Hyrushi looked at her and said “I have a question for you, Ambassador. You say that you understand our position. Tell me… did you you understand it before you arrived here? Or has the brief time you have spent on Oed given you such underatanding?” His words were direct, but his tone was one of inquiry.. curiosity.

Jeanette was quiet for a moment, her emotions still contained for the most part, as they always were when she was working. But the one thing that was always true was that she was always honest and was content to wait till her words could be exactly that. “Both, actually.” Mathis leaned forward and rested her arm on the desk. “Being on location always make a difference for me personally. The facts of a situation- especially the details of a report- are always going to be insufficient. Sometimes that’s all you get. And I have been in more than a few situations like that. I have been also in a somewhat similar position to ours, if only in feeling and not details.” Situations she could not ever speak of as well. Such was the work.

She smiled softly. “Spending time here has made a difference, lending more clarity. There is something special here and not only do I understand your need and desire to protect that, but you do deserve to be treated with respect as a member of the Federation. The reality is that some days there are a lot of people shouting their needs at the Council and they are not always equipped to listen more closely for the ones being shouted over. You should not have to shout in the first place, but this is the reality here.” She reached out and tapped the edge of the PaDD. “This feels like the inevitable outcome of a situation that has been long brewing. It should not have to be this way, but I do understand the need for it, yes.”

Eela could feel the ambassador’s sincerity and she appreciated that it wasn’t some formulaic response (not that she ever thought Mathis was the type to give one). “As someone who dislikes being subject to ultimatums intensely, I dislike having to give them as well, but the Governor and I are thinking long term here. We all want these negotiations with the Vren to go well, and if they do the social landscape of Oed is going to change dramatically. And we recognize that there will be a trickle-down effect into other areas, that this is more than just government officials talking back and forth.” Eela understood for herself that this would impact things on the Starfleet side, since she’d already been having similar discussions with the brass (much to their chagrin).

“We appreciate your understanding in this matter, Ambassador. We look forward to the considered and reasoned response we are sure the statement will encourage.” Again, impossible to tell if that was sarcasm or a belief. “Thank you again. When the statement is to be read, please let us know. And if anyone wishes to discuss the matter, please let them know that Captain Dasca and I stand eager to have those conversations.” and he stood and held out his hand. “We do not wish to keep you, Ambassador. And if we can assist in anyway, we are ready to lend a hand.”

Mathis rose in her usual graceful way and clasped Hyrushi’s hand, giving it a small shake that was still very respectful. “I will be sure to let you know as soon as I know anything, on all accords.” She let go and bowed her head to him. “Governor.”

Eela had also stood.

Jeannette turned to Eela, pressed a hand to her heart and bowed her head. “Lieutenant Governor.”

With a smile, Dasca repeated the gesture, unsurprised by Mathis’ subtle observances.

Taking the PaDD with her, Mathis stepped out of the office to return to her office with another significant task to take care of.

Eela retook her seat, crossed her legs at the knee and gazed at Kenzo. “That went pretty well, all told.”

“It did. But that was the simple part. I am most anxious to see how the statement is received… both by the representatives and the rest of the government.” He thought in silence, staring at the door, until his black eyes flicked and focused on Eela. “How are you? Your week has certainly not been boring. How are you feeling?”

Eela was, in a word, contained. It was the one way she was coping just now and it seemed necessary. “Work is good,” she said softly. “Beyond that…” Eela averted her gaze and sighed. “It’s mixed.” She shifted her gaze back to him and shrugged. “I’m here.”

Kenzo stood and came around the desk. he leaned back against it and leaned forward and took her hand. “What can I do to help?” he asked, and he let the physical connection create a small connection between them.
