The crew arranged themselves into two groups with the two Security Crewman joining the first group who beamed down. The transporter officer looked up at the Captain, “Sir, I am placing you in a park area on the South East side of the colony where there is less interference for the beam in. There is a large hub just the North of the park that is in walking distance.”

Young Ashley hadn’t been on board the Merrimack for long but she was yet assigned to an away mission. Which means her check ins will have to wait. She then went up to the captain. “Hello captain. I am Lieutenant J.G. Ashley Walker your new engineering physicist. Tell me where you need me and I’ll do it.” She said as she was super eager to get to work on the planet surface. She then however stood there awaiting orders from her commanding officer and uses her tricorder to run scans.

“Yes, I’d like you to join this Landing Party too,” Glen replied. “There may be inspections of mines necessary and the determination of their safety, so we can always use another engineer.”

“Whenever you are ready!” Captain Glen told the Transporter Chief.

When both groups were finally beamed down they found themselves in a round park area, surrounded by jungle foliage with two paths that lead out to the North and South. Mist weaved itself through the canopy but blue sky could be seen right above them. The air was humid and warm, the team might find that their uniform jackets would be too heavy to wear once they started hiking.

When ever Lance beamed anywhere he always felt the overwhelming urge to check he had all his limbs in the right places, he had got good at not making it obvious and was once again glad to see he’d come down in one piece. He felt the heat first, “We really have to get better at weather reports when we land.” he muttered. He took out his tricorder and began initial scans on air quality, pollution, and life forms. He looked over at Stella “Fancy scanning for radio and media broadcasts?” he asked her, he would normally added it to his list but having more people to help was a bonus.

Unlike Lance who had managed to keep it a secret, Hunter on the other hand seeing he was still in one piece thanked the Gods ,then the nausea hit but the doctor had always managed to keep that to himself knowing it would soon pass. He then took out his medical tricoder to search for any life signs in the vicinity.

Glen checked that everyone had arrived and waiting while scans were performed and Security officers took up their flanking positions before asking them to move on. Given that the choice of path was North or South, and that there was a large hub just the North of their present position, the direction they should take was a no brainer. However, he wanted to see if the surface scans threw up anything they had missed from the Merrimack in orbit.

Scans were still intermittent, even here on the surface though a bit better than they had been in orbit. It was if something was scrambling the signals, not like a regular signal jammer though, it did not blanket the area and there were spots where the scans got through. Atmospheric scans showed the typical atmosphere and weather from an area in the equatorial region of a planet. High humidity, high temperature with the building of cumulus clouds through out the day. Given the jungle like growth around them it was highly likely that it rained heavily in this region every afternoon.

What pollution there was, was focused around the mining colony and dissipated as it wafted away from it. Being as it was a Federation mining facility though the pollution was of much lower levels then most non Federation mining colonies as the Federation provided the proper equipment to dilute any pollution from mining efforts so as not to negatively effect the planet, atmosphere or water.

The natural fauna(animal lifeforms) in the immediate area of the colony was scarce and mainly consisted of birds, marsupials, simians, insects, reptiles, and other lifeforms indigenous to a jungle environment. As to the colony the lifeforms within showed almost 10, 000 beings, of a variety of species such as Human, Betazoid, Vulcan, etc.

Something interesting of note: scans within the colony (now that they were close enough) were clearer and more concise then the scans they attempted to make away from the colony. It was if they signal jamming was coming from without the colony not within.

When they first landed Hunter only picked up insignificant life forms but now that they were closer to the colony the scanning halted ‘’That’s strange the scan stopped as if its being blocked .Captain it seem the jamming is coming from outside and not from the colony within’’ the doctor hoped the others could figure out some hypothesis as to what was going on.

Sharp his eyes darting around, one hand on his phaser just in case he needed to take it out .He did not waste anytime taking his position outside the group, knowing that as a security he was the first line of defense . He knew Hunter was scanning for any life signs in the vicinity in what ever form and he was not about to take any chances .

Ashley then heard something about mines. “Captain. Did I hear you say mines?” As she wasn’t sure if she heard anything right. But she is now that she can do what she needs to do. It’s her job to be that engineer that can do her job. So she went ahead and did her job with no hesitation.

“Yes, that’s right, mines!” replied Glen, “Niobium Dilithium Hard Rock Mines! Not Anti-Personnel Mines!”

“I’ve heard about them back at the academy,” Ashley said to the captain. She was however thinking of how to work with them. She only has heard about them. But never seen them nor worked on them before.

“Mining?” Glen replied, ” The process of extracting valuable minerals and geological materials from a planet’s surface? It’s required to obtain most materials that can’t be grown or created in Replicator. I would have hoped that you had heard of mining before, unless the standard of teaching at the Academy has fallen even further.”

“Sadly enough sir. The teaching there at the academy has fallen through more and more into a hole. I’m just surprised they didn’t exactly teach it right. But I will get the job done no matter what.” Ashley said as she got excited to do something that she wanted to learn at the academy but was never taught.

M’Mera nodded to Fleegman and Sharp, she motioned Fleegman to take up a position equidistant from herself and Sharp so they surrounded the Away Team in equal distance. She then turned her attention to the trees surrounding them in her third of an area. Her ears swivelled and nose twitched as she followed the sounds and smells of the natural animals around them. She neither heard nor smelled any humanoid beings in their immediate vicinity.
“We arre alone herre at thiss moment, Captain. Therre iss no one in ourr vicinity though I hearr morre manufacturred noises to the norrth of uss.”

“The nearest population hub is also north,” replied the Captain. “That is where we will find answers, so I suggest we get moving before the rains begin.”

The entire process of being transported for the first time had left Stella’s stomach a bit queasy for a moment. She looked a bit confused as she patted her stomach as if to make sure that everything had been put back together properly. After a good inspection she took a deep breath and smiled at the heat , humidity and the various and nefarious smells that go with most swamps which it is best not to know what they might be. The only thing she could do was to smile. ” Well, I’ll be!” she exclaimed. ” Feels like St. Tammany’s Parrish on a summer day!” As soon as the last words had left her lips though than she had gone to work. She was busily scanning her surroundings for a few moments before she dutifully addressed the captain. First, she had to get her serious face and remember not to call him honey or captain sugar. ” Sir. she began. ” I feel I should remind you that swamps like this may put off enough methane to the point that the can interfere with infrared radiation communications which are sometimes used for comms.”

“I’m a pilot, not a scientist!” replied the Captain. “Lt. Malone, is there a high concentration of methane gas in this immediate vicinity?”

Stella frowned and looked at the readings on her scanner. ” Ahhhh… ” she said in a low voice. ” Never mind about the methane captain. I was reading something else! ” Stella’s face turned a wonderful shade of red then as she left herself a mental note to be quiet until such time as someone actually asked for her input. This WAS her first away team after all.

Lance wandered over to Stella “Don’t worry Lt you didn’t want to know the screw ups I made in my first month here, these tircorders are a bit… Well difficult to read at times. I spent the hours trying to work out what weird life form was on the turbolift wall to find it was a paint scuff.” He said with a reassuring shrug.

“Let’s get moving,” Captain Glen said. “Never mind the rain, we don’t want to be still in this jungle when it begins to get dark either.”

  • Glen, CO

“Aye captain.” She said out of respect.

Hunter started walking along with the others though he did wonder why the Captain had said nothing and neither did anyone offer their opinion when he spoke that there was something wrong when the doctor had scanned towards the located area of the people who lived in the region .
For now he stayed quiet , maybe when they approach nearer hopefully the team would get a more clear picture of what was going on.

Hunter Dr.

Lance looked down at his tri-corder he wanted to give it a shake sometimes but probably best not to do it in front of the captain, he looked over at Hunter as the walked. “Are you scans still coming back with bits being jammed? It seems different from what we saw on the ship. I thought the jamming was coming from the settlement this thing says not.” He knew the Dr was scanning in a way similar to him. “Captain, would it be worth sending someone to check out the area that’s being jammed?” Lance asked.

OOC: Scans were clear toward the settlement it was the farther away from the settlement that the scans appeared intermittent and jammed. My apologies for being scarce, I spent two days in hospital and am recovering:)

IC:
As the party walked down the Northern trail the circle of trees eventually ended and there was a large circular building ahead of them. As they came closer they could see several settlers and miners who entered and exited in mining and settler clothes, mainly tunic, pants and boots. None wore any sign of authority on them and none of the settlers seemed to pay any attention to the Starfleet crew. The majority of them were human but there were other races such as Bajoran and Riisan. The path that the crew walked on lead right up to the main doors of the building.

Lance raised an eyebrow “Odd you you would think a bunch of people in Starfleet uniforms would stick out like a sore thumb.... Apprantly we don’t even rate a second glance.”
