Otr’Iq Mirai made his way down from the lift down a corridor, occasionally looking at his PaDD for directions. He made his way up to the door that the PaDD had indicated was to the CoS office. Mirai cocked his head slightly and then pressed the door chime. He hadn’t personally heard much of the Lt. Commander and was interested in seeing what kind of officer he would be.

Lt. Otr’Iq Mirai - Tactical

“Come in,” Thomas called.

“Ah, lieutenant. I hope you found the place easily enough?”

Mirai entered and gave a formal bow to Lt. Commander McGregor. “Hajimemashite, Lt. Commander McGregor. Chakunin itashimashita.” Mirai then stood and offered his hand to the Lt. Commander. “I found the place easily enough. I remember on my first assignment there was a glitch with my PaDD that was redirecting me all over the ship.” Mirai left out that it was sabotage from a fellow ensign. The slight was rectified and the two officers soon moved past their animosity. Mirai felt no need to slight him in his anecdote.
“It’s a pleasure to be aboard the Genesis sir. I look forward to working with you.” Mirai gave a warm smile.

IC: “Ah, Yokoso go josen kudasai,” Thomas said, haltingly, stumbling through the unfamiliar language. It had been quite a long time since he’d last visited Japan. He gave an answering nod as he rose to take the younger man’s hand.

“The pleasure’s all mine. If you don’t mind my asking, you seem a little old to be such a junior rank?”

Mirai smiled and shook his hand, “Nihongo ga o-jōzu desu ne.”

“It’s certainly not my first,” Thomas agreed.

Standing to his full height and smiling, Mirai said, “I was a late bloomer, one would say. After going through the standard education in Japan, I did not immediately go to the academy, but instead went through University and then spent several years touring the Klingon Empire with my mother. I didn’t join Starfleet until I was 27, and then was with the Pythagoras for 5 years after graduating from Starfleet Academy and then spent little over 2 years on the Husqvarna. I was promoted to Lt. J.G. while aboard the Pythagoras and then full Lieutenant shortly before leaving the Husqvarna. On the Husqvarna’s last mission, the ship was destroyed and I was marooned along with the rest of the survivor’s on a non-federation planet with a primitive population. We did what we had to in order to survive until a Klingon ship was able to find us and rescue us. While the circumstances were taken into account, our actions unfortunately violated the Prime Directive and we all were forced to receive a demotion, following court martial. I’m told it was advised on our records that the incident should not be an obstacle for future consideration for promotion.”
While Mirai never felt behind his contemporaries, there were certainly times where his age gave him a unique perspective compared to his colleagues of similar rank. Mirai didn’t like to think about the six months spent stranded on Taurius IV (Tsutaku, as the locals had called it). But his lower than expected rank did warrant an explanation.

“A very interesting career,” Thomas said. “I was hoping it was something like that and not that you were a perpetual troublemaker that avoided responsibility like the plague.”

Then again, some people simply didn’t want or weren’t suited to leadership positions, and would actively work to avoid promotion.

“No sir,” Mirai said, “Just a string of complications. Ones I hope to avoid in the future. I look forward to serving aboard the Genesis.”
