Otr'Iq Mirai

Otr’Iq is the son of a Human father and a Klingon Mother. His parents met during the Dominion War, where his father, Commander Hikaru Mirai, fought valiantly to save a Klingon ship under attack from a Jem’Hadar vessel. His valiant efforts earned him a commendation from Starfleet and the love of his opposite number aboard the Klingon vessel. Commander Valah, soon Captain, of the Klingon ship T’Pok was a valiant warrior, and after the battle in which she met Mirai, assumed the captaincy of the vessel following the death of her commanding officer.
Hikaru further engendered himself to Valah when, following a medical discharge due to the injuries he sustained, Hikaru joined with the crew of the T’Pok to continue fighting, rather than return to earth. At the end of the war, Valah and Hikaru were married and he took her back to earth with him, where they had their son, Otr’Iq.

Otr’iq was a very studious child. Often reading the history of both the Federation and the Klingon Empire in order to gain a better perspective of his heritage. While his mother told him stories of Kahless, his father would often read to him of King Arthur or Miyamoto Musashi. He was instilled with a warrior’s spirit honed with a philosopher’s mind. Before attending Starfleet Academy, Otr’Iq attended Yale University and received degrees in Philosophy, History, and Anthropology. His early studies of Klingon and Terran culture had nurtured a keen interest in all cultures and what made them unique.

Otr’Iq studied Karate under his father and Mok’bara from his mother, achieving high ranks in both. At Yale, he learned Tae Kwon Do and Ringen, a German form of wrestling. While at the Academy, he focused on more armed combat, incorporating what his mother had taught him of the Bat’leth with the historic longsword, kendo, and other forms of swordplay.

While he had faced certain forms of discrimination most of his life, he was happy to say the instances were few and far between, particularly at the Academy. However, he soon found that there was one Admiral in particular, Admiral Goldeck, who was of the old guard and took an instant dislike to Otr’Iq. Otr’Iq found he had to work extra hard to make sure he had a clean record, for anything would be used by Goldeck to reprimand him. Goldeck’s views of Otr’Iq and Klingons, in general, had the young cadet relegated to security courses and often kept from command. Despite this, Otr’Iq found himself assigned to the Pythagoras as an ensign Security Officer seven months after graduation.

He served aboard the Pythagoras for five years, earning a promotion to Lieutenant. Shortly after his promotion, he was transferred to the Husqvarna as the Deputy Head of Security under department head Lt. Commander Morris. Two years into this assignment, the Husqvarna encountered an incident where an unknown alien vessel attacked them. The crew were forced to abandon the ship and were marooned on an alien world. While there, they had to fight off multiple attacks from local inhabitants, during which the captain and Lt. Commander Morris were killed. Under the XO, Otr’Iq took over as head of security and helped keep the survivors alive until they were rescued by the Klingon ship, Volchak. Otr’Iq’s knowledge of Klingon culture proved invaluable in this endeavor.
