Lieutenant,

I hope this message finds you well and in one piece—though I suspect you’d consider a cracked rib more tolerable than a visit to Sickbay.

Be that as it may, Starfleet Medical protocols require all department officers to complete their annual physical evaluations. As our new CMO, I’d like to use these as an opportunity to get acquainted with the crew, both personally and professionally.

Please reply with a time convenient to you within the next 72 hours. If I do not hear from you by then, I will assume your tactical instincts have failed you and send a medical team to retrieve you with maximum bedside manner.

My door is open, Lieutenant. Let’s make this painless—for both of us.

Mirai awoke to the message from Sickbay and raised an eyebrow to it. The new CMO seemed to have a jovial sense of humor. Mirai smiled and scheduled an appointment for later that day after his shift had ended.

Walking into Sickbay, Mirai looked about for the Doctor. Contrary to the Doctor’s assumption, Mirai held no animosity to doctors or hospitals. In his view, a warrior must keep himself fit and in peak condition. Regular care from a physician is essential to that end.

Dr. Edelu stepped out from behind a console as the doors hissed open, revealing the tall form of Lieutenant Mirai.

“Lieutenant Otr’Iq Mirai,” he greeted, voice even and calm. “Right on time. A promising sign for someone whose file reads like a battlefield memoir.”

Mirai smiled and shrugged, “Arigato gozaimasu.”

He gestured to the nearest bio-bed, already active and humming softly.

“I’ve reviewed your medical history—excellent cardiovascular health, no persistent injuries from your time marooned on Etrek III, though your left shoulder did receive quite the hammering.”

“Sling Shot,” Mirai said walking to the biobed, “We were under attack from a tribal force, so were trying our best to not use phasers, and one of them had a nasty rock in a pretty well put together sling and got in a very good shot to my shoulder.”

He gestured lightly toward the biobed. “Go ahead and take a seat. We’ll start with a baseline scan, then I’ll ask a few questions. After that, you’re free to return to the business of readiness and armament.”

Mirai gave a slight head bow and sat down on the bio bed. His posture was naturally straight and rigid, a habit that Mirai rarely noticed anymore.

As Edelu moved to retrieve his tricorder, he glanced back toward the half-Klingon officer.

“I also noted your academic record. Anthropology, philosophy, multiple martial disciplines. You’ve walked both the path of the sword and the scroll. It’s rare. And commendable.”

Mirai smiled again and nodded, “The sharpness of the sword is immaterial if the mind who wields it is dull.”

He tapped a few settings on the tricorder and turned it toward Mirai. “Let’s see how the vessel is holding up.”

A pause, just long enough to allow space for conversation—an invitation, not a requirement.

“Do you find that Starfleet leaves you room for both?”

“Actually,” Mirai said, “I find it naturally encourages it. In my off time, I can pursue my interests in a more scholarly aptitude, research, training and so on. Meanwhile, on assignments, I get to have first hand experience while also testing my knowledge in a practical environment. I can learn more about other races and species as well as putting what I have learned of them into a practical application.”
