The intruder was attempting to take something from Tamm, while Commander Batario was attempting to contain it and Engineering was simultaneously working to stabilize Tamm’s signal. Whatever was occurring aboard the derelict was becoming increasingly interconnected with the patterns the Chernov had been observing.

“Mercer, give Engineering the full correlation data. I want their systems comparing Tamm’s signal fluctuations against the harmonic pulses, the transporter stabilization windows, and the activity of those four contacts. If there is a relationship between what is happening to Tamm and the vessel’s transmissions, I want it identified.”

O’Neil’s eyes moved toward Tactical.

“Hale, maintain passive observation of the intruder. I want everything you can determine about what it is attempting to remove from Tamm, but do not interfere. Track its movements, power output, and any interaction it has with the containment field. If its activity changes the field or produces another response from the derelict, I want that correlation recorded immediately.”

The Captain turned toward Science.

“Science, add Tamm to the comparison model. Go back through every harmonic sequence we have recorded and determine whether the vessel’s transmissions changed when Tamm’s condition changed. Pay particular attention to the sequence immediately preceding the intruder’s attempt and anything transmitted afterward.”

He paused for a moment before looking toward Communications.

“Valharra, include Tamm’s activity in your linguistic analysis. Compare the harmonic sequence associated with the Entity against the sequences we’ve already isolated. Start with the recurring component and those three secondary groups. If the same groups appear in a consistent relationship whenever Tamm is affected, we may finally have enough context to assign meaning rather than simply identifying repetition.”

O’Neil returned his attention to the main viewscreen.

“Operations, continue recording every transporter stabilization window. Do not attempt to use one. I want to know whether those windows continue occurring at the same point in the harmonic cycle, particularly while this activity involving Tamm is taking place.”

The Captain leaned back slightly in his chair, studying the ancient vessel and the scattered sensor information surrounding it.

“We have the vessel’s harmonic transmissions, the containment field, the four intruders, the reconnaissance device, the transporter windows, and now Tamm’s signal. Too many events are occurring in correlation for us to treat them as independent.”

His gaze remained fixed upon the derelict.

“But we still don’t know what Tamm is, what the intruder is trying to take, or whether this vessel is protecting Tamm or protecting itself from whatever Tamm represents.”

O’Neil folded his hands against the armrests.

“So we continue to listen. Nobody interferes with the containment field. Nobody attempts contact with the intruders. Nobody transmits to the derelict.”

A brief pause followed.

“If the vessel is trying to tell us something, then the pattern should be there. We simply need to be disciplined enough to recognize it.”

At Science, the comparison model expanded to incorporate Tamm’s fluctuations. The computer began working backward through the accumulated harmonic recordings, aligning each sequence against the Entity’s recorded activity.

Lieutenant Marcus Hale continued monitoring the concealed vessel and its reconnaissance device without active emissions. For several moments, nothing changed. Then his tactical display updated. “Captain, activity from the unidentified vessel.”

The change was immediate but controlled. The vessel remained concealed within the debris field, but its power output increased sharply. A second encrypted burst transmitted from the ship toward the derelict, considerably stronger than the earlier signal directed through its reconnaissance device.

Hale studied the incoming telemetry. “The transmission is directed toward the derelict, sir. Same general encryption characteristics as the earlier burst.” Almost simultaneously, the four contacts aboard the derelict reacted.

Their individual power signatures surged against the containment field. One after another, they moved toward its perimeter, and the field brightened as the ancient vessel held them inside. Their synchronized activity bore little resemblance to random movement now.

Mercer looked up from Operations. “Captain, the timing matches. The contacts began reacting less than a second after the transmission reached the derelict.”

The unidentified vessel responded again. Its engines began generating a low-level gravimetric distortion within the debris field. The reconnaissance device altered position, moving closer to the derelict while maintaining its passive approach.

Hale’s expression tightened as another reading appeared. “Sir, I think we may have been looking at those four contacts the wrong way.” He transferred the correlation to the command display. “Their signatures match components of the reconnaissance device’s control architecture. Not identical, but close enough to suggest a common technological origin.”

Another encrypted transmission struck the derelict. The four figures surged against their confinement almost simultaneously. “The alien vessel may be trying to regain control of its drones, Captain.”

The vessel hidden among the debris was no longer merely observing what was happening aboard the derelict. It was reacting to the loss of its assets. And this time, its power levels continued to rise.
