Lt. Valharra steps off the transporter from the counselor’s office. He whispers his apologies for the meeting going later than it should have. He read over and listened to Ensign Venn catch him up to speed, and got to work finishing what she was doing, relieving her of her shift. He continued watching and studying the signal, but not responding or sending anything to it as the captain had ordered. “Part of this signal is a language, I’ve heard before, I’m pretty sure of it, I’m creating an analysis, see if I can translate.” He stated from the Comms station to the captain.

Lt. Valharra, Communications Officer

The next harmonic pulse moved through the derelict as Lieutenant Valharra continued his analysis. Science quickly confirmed that while much of the transmission changed with each pulse, the recurring harmonic grouping remained mathematically consistent.

“Captain, the constant is holding,” a Science officer reported. “The surrounding sequence changes, but that component maintains the same proportional relationship. It appears deliberate.”

The blue-white energy surrounding the four unidentified contacts also became clearer. Rather than a weapons discharge or power transfer, the readings resembled a localized containment or isolation field. When one of the contacts attempted to move, the field intensified and its progress stopped.

At Operations, Mercer confirmed another transporter stabilization interval had appeared almost simultaneously with the harmonic pulse. The away team remained secure, and the window stayed available for several seconds before interference returned.

Tactical simultaneously detected one of the reconnaissance devices withdrawing toward the concealed vessel in the debris field. No weapons signatures accompanied the movement.

Then the four intruder contacts disappeared from sensors for approximately two seconds.

When they returned, all four had been relocated into the same compartment.

The blue-white field closed around them, and the derelict’s spreading internal activity abruptly stabilized.

A new harmonic sequence followed—shorter, cleaner, and carrying the same recurring component Lieutenant Valharra was already examining.

Whatever the ancient vessel had done to the intruders, it now appeared to be transmitting again.

Captain Thaddus Charles Francis O’Neil listened to Lieutenant Valharra’s report without interrupting, his attention fixed on the communications display as the latest harmonic sequence faded from the sensors. “Good, Lieutenant. Keep working, but remain completely passive. Establish the structure before attempting a translation.” His gaze shifted toward the science station. “Science, compare this pulse against every transmission we’ve recorded. Frequency, duration, phase, placement. Identify what remains constant and what changes.” O’Neil then looked toward Tactical and Operations. “Tactical, compare the four contacts before and after their relocation and flag anything that changed. Operations, correlate the transporter stabilization windows with the harmonic pulses. I want the timing.”

O’Neil returned his attention to the ancient vessel on the viewscreen. “Maintain passive tracking on the unidentified vessel and its reconnaissance devices. Shields remain at standby, and weapons stay on defensive status. Nobody approaches or interferes with that compartment unless there is a clear indication of hostile activity.” He paused briefly before looking back toward Communications. “Valharra, continue monitoring the signal. Do not respond to it, regardless of what you think you recognize.” His expression remained composed as another faint harmonic trace appeared across the display. “If this is communication, we’ll learn more by listening than by announcing ourselves.”

The Captain settled back into the command chair, his eyes remaining on the derelict as the bridge continued its analysis. “Science, report the moment you have the comparison. Communications, report the moment you have a confirmed pattern. Until then, maintain silence and passive observation.” O’Neil allowed another second to pass before adding, “Whatever that vessel is doing, we’re not going to interfere with it until we understand what we’re looking at.” He folded his hands against the armrests and watched the ancient ship in silence. “Continue monitoring.”

The bridge remained quiet as the Chernov’s passive sensor feeds continued compiling the Captain’s requested comparisons. At Science, the accumulated harmonic sequences were layered against one another, revealing a clearer structure than had been apparent from any individual transmission.

“Captain, comparison complete,” the Science officer reported. “The recurring component appears once in every sequence, but its position changes. In the earlier transmissions it appeared near the middle. Since the four contacts were contained, it has consistently moved to the beginning.” She studied the analysis another moment. “There are also three secondary harmonic groups repeating in different combinations. They may represent individual concepts rather than part of the carrier signal.”

Operations completed its own correlation moments later. Mercer transferred the timing directly to the command display. “Transporter stabilization is synchronized with the pulses, Captain. The usable windows begin approximately 1.8 seconds after each harmonic emission and last between six and nine seconds. So far, every stabilization window has followed that pattern.”

At Tactical, the four contained contacts remained motionless within the same compartment. Their individual power signatures had dropped significantly following their relocation, although all four remained detectable. The blue-white field surrounding them continued fluctuating whenever one of their systems increased power.

Another passive contact appeared near the debris field. One of the small reconnaissance devices emerged briefly from behind the wreckage, transmitted a narrow encrypted burst toward the concealed vessel, then disappeared again without approaching the Chernov.

Science glanced toward O’Neil. “One additional observation, Captain. The derelict’s harmonic activity increased when the intruders entered restricted areas, changed when they were contained, and stabilized immediately afterward. That suggests the transmissions may be describing events or conditions aboard the vessel.”

Almost on cue, another harmonic sequence arrived. This one began with the recurring component Lieutenant Valharra had been studying, followed by two of the secondary groups Science had just isolated.

The Communications display automatically flagged both repetitions. Whatever Lieutenant Valharra recognized within the signal, he now had several consistent pieces with which to begin testing his translation.
