Will nodded, more to himself than anyone else as he read the scan results. “Ok, take breathers, but don’t activate them. The atmosphere should allow us to breathe, but any signs of feeling light headed, use your own oxygen supply.” he asked as he tapped in a few commands into the console. The shuttle door opened up, revealing the illuminated walk way.

“It appears we are being shown where to go,” he said as he led the team off the shuttle.

“Commander, might I suggest using caution. We don’t know what is really going on out there.” She suggested to him.

John looked at her “ it is clear that an invitation has been extended. It would be rude to not accept it.” He said with a steady voice grabbing the breathing devices

Lt. John Forster (CWO)

“That may be, Lieutenant. But we should also be cautious. We don’t know what is really out there. Which in this case is logical, rather than just running right on out in the middle of something that we know nothing about.” She said. “No offense, Lieutenant. Although it is Commander Archer’s call. Not ours.” She added.

The shuttle hatch lowered with a muted hydraulic hiss, revealing the immense docking chamber beyond. Cool air drifted inside, carrying a crisp mineral scent touched with faint ozone and crystallized moisture. Rather than the stale atmosphere expected aboard an ancient derelict, the air felt remarkably fresh, as though the vessel had somehow preserved itself beyond the reach of time.

Stepping onto the deck, the away team found themselves within a vast chamber whose ceiling rose nearly forty meters overhead, broken only by flowing ribbons of pale blue-white light. Massive supports curved seamlessly into the overhead without visible joints or welds, giving the entire structure the appearance of having been grown rather than built. The deck beneath their boots was smooth and almost glass-like, yet provided secure footing, while the slightly reduced gravity made movement feel subtly lighter without affecting balance.

The silence was profound. The only sounds were the quiet hum of tricorders, the rustle of uniforms, and the measured cadence of boots against the deck, each quickly absorbed by the surrounding architecture. Beneath those familiar noises lingered the harmonic resonance that had guided the Chernov to the derelict. It was now clearly audible—a pure, sustained tone woven throughout the vessel itself. Every illuminated conduit pulsed gently with the same frequency, giving the unsettling impression that the ship was quietly alive.

Medical tricorders continued to report ideal conditions. The atmosphere remained breathable, the temperature comfortable, and gravity stable, with no toxins, pathogens, allergens, or hazardous radiation detected..

Engineering scans remained far more perplexing. There were no generators, plasma conduits, life-support processors, gravitic emitters, or any recognizable infrastructure, yet every environmental system functioned perfectly. Stranger still, the breathable atmosphere extended only about two kilometers into the vessel before ending abruptly at an invisible boundary where vacuum resumed, with no forcefields or pressure barriers separating the two regions.

Science sensors detected an immense network of geometric structures buried beneath the deck, all resonating with the same harmonic frequency as the illuminated corridor. The formations appeared to be part of a single integrated system extending throughout the vessel rather than isolated machinery. Preliminary mapping suggested the pathway led toward the ship’s command and navigation center, while deeper scans hinted at scientific laboratories, biological containment facilities, engineering spaces surrounding an unstable subspace power core, and habitation decks where isolated pockets of atmosphere still remained. Much of the vessel, however, remained hidden behind persistent subspace phase distortions.

Security scans continued to report no life signs, no active defenses, and no weapons systems. Only deep within inaccessible sections did ancient energy matrices occasionally flicker into existence before fading once more, their purpose remaining unknown.

As the team absorbed the impossible engineering around them, the vessel responded. Floor panels several meters ahead illuminated in slow succession, extending the glowing pathway deeper into the ship before disappearing around a graceful curve. The lights neither beckoned nor commanded. They simply revealed the next stretch of the journey before patiently waiting once again.

For all its mysteries, the ancient vessel inspired neither fear nor hostility. Instead, it conveyed the unmistakable sensation that its visitors had not arrived by accident. Somewhere deeper within the derelict, something that had waited alone for countless ages seemed quietly content to welcome its long-awaited guests.

Will felt slightly on edge. Whilst he knew that taking risk often resulted in higher reward, and was prepared to take personal risk to achieve Starfleet objectives, this felt too scripted. It was no longer feeling like fortune or accident that were causing these events, but more of a design. And that unnerved him.

Cmdr William Archer
First Officer

“Commander my apologies sir. I do not intend to overstep my position as Second Officer and Chief science officer sir.” She said to Commander Archer. She had seen that he felt uneasy of what’s going on.
