Will ran his hand over the front nose of the shuttle, admiring the sharp lines that silhouetted its shape. He always thought the concept of a shuttlecraft was underrated. Yes, transporters could get you to A to B in instant moments, but they always had their moments when they misbehaved. And then there was the idea of sallying forward in something that was completely, well almost completely, defenceless, just like a loan messenger on a horse in times of old. In his mind, the shuttle was an instrument of diplomacy, getting to places were larger capital ships could not.

The doors leading to the shuttle bay opened, and a couple of the crew who were joining him on the mission walked in. Patting the shuttle one last time, he turned around to those who were mustering around him.

John smiled at him “well sir I will be the one flying this bird” he said i’m boarding the shuttle and starting pre-flight checks.

Lt. John Forster (CWO)

T’Sol had just came in from Sickbay from what she was doing with her scans. “Apologies for my tardiness, Commander. I was still in Sickbay, finishing my scans and everything else sir. I wasn’t aware that I was assigned to this mission sir.” She apologized and explained her reasoning of being tardy.

As Lieutenant Forster initiated the shuttle’s pre-flight sequence, the craft’s computers began cycling through a complete diagnostic of every major system.

Across the cockpit displays, status indicators steadily changed from amber to green as each subsystem completed its self-test.

Primary fusion reactor: Online.
Impulse propulsion: Nominal.
Reaction control thrusters: Responding within tolerance.
Inertial dampening field: Calibrated.
Structural integrity field: Stable.
Deflector systems: Operational.
Navigation computer: Synchronized with USS Chernov.
Internal sensors: Fully functional.
Communications: Secure channels established with the shuttle bay and the bridge.
Transporter systems: Standing by.
Life support: Operating at 100%.

A final series of automated diagnostics verified flight controls, environmental systems, and emergency backups before the computer displayed the results.

PREFLIGHT DIAGNOSTICS COMPLETE
ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL
SHUTTLE STATUS: FLIGHT READY

Nearby deck crew disconnected the remaining service umbilicals and rolled support equipment clear of the shuttle. From the flight control station overlooking the bay, a technician glanced over the completed diagnostic package before keying the intercom.

“Pre-flight diagnostics have completed successfully. All shuttle systems are operating within normal parameters. The craft is ready for departure pending launch authorization.”

The shuttle now sat alone on the deck, powered, sealed, and awaiting the crew’s final preparations before launch.

John was in the pilot set checking a few more systems “ ok we are about ready to go did everyone remember to use the restroom before we leave” he joke to lighten the mood

Lt. John Forster (CWO)

“Restroom? It is illogical. If it is a joke, it is also illogical.” T’Sol replied back completely unsure how to respond to what John had said. “Vulcans don’t understand jokes. To us a joke is illogical. I do apologize if I do not seem understandable when it comes to human behavior.” She added.

Will smiled as he settled in to the navigation position next to Forster. “Unfortunately for us who aren’t able to control our emotions as well as Vulcans can, we sometimes need a bit of humour to break the tension and allow us to focus on the detail of what we’re doing.” he said, matter of factly. “In short, humour makes humans work better.”

“This is Shuttle Hubble to Shuttlebay, we’re ready to slip,” he said, referencing an old nautical term. As few moments later, the Shuttlebay doors started to open, revealing the deep black of space.

“Lieutenant Forster,” Will started, with a slight gleam in his eye, “take her out.”
