SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE EVENTS OF THE PROLOGUE

The bridge of the Ogawa was calm as the day shift wound down, the officers preparing to hand over their duties to the night shift. It had been fairly quiet over the last several days, and as anyone in the medical field knew, quiet was a condition that rarely lasted and, sometimes, it was a very bad omen.

At that moment, consoles began to blink, indicating an incoming communication from Starfleet Command, Priority 1.

OOC: Someone should report this to the Captain.

OOC: This notification should be done by a bridge or communications officer. We do have a bridge crew, don’t we?

Hearing there was a Priority One call for her, Cypress stood from the center chair and walked to the ready room. Once there, she rounded her desk and sat down. After hitting the ‘connect’ button, she waited to see what the information would be about. Hopefully, the Ogawa would be given an assignment–everyone was getting antsy to focus on something together. It usually took a mission to do that. </>Captain Elliot here. Who am I speaking with?</>

Daniel was in his chair on the Bridge when the CO left to take the priority one message

He figured the Captain would probably talk to him when she knew what was going on, for right now there really wasn’t much he could do but stay in his spot and wait , everything else seemed to be running smoothly right now.

OOC: I guess we should probably look at who should be on the bridge or maybe some of us can have second characters for these kind of situations?

The image shifted and was replaced by a middle aged admiral, her blonde hair greying slightly at the temples, silhouetted by the emblem of Starfleet Medical behind her.

“Ah, Captain! I’m Admiral Eling. I would say it’s nice to meet you but, unfortunately, the circumstances here are not that nice,” the admiral leaned forward at her desk and crossed her hands before continuing. “Ten hours ago we received a message from a supervisor on one of our colonies along the Romulan Neutral Zone, Peshka III. It’s a fairly small colony, about 5000 people, mostly some archaeological research teams, their families and support personnel. Its a pretty rustic setup, no Starfleet personnel are present planet side. Anyway, some of the colonists came down with symptoms of a mild upper respiratory infection 48 hours ago and that quickly progressed to something a lot more serious. Reports are that a majority of the colonists are showing symptoms now and several have died. The medical personnel, by which I mean a field medic and his apprentice, tried standard antivirals which had no effect. They’ve been trying to provide supportive care as best they can but obviously people need more than that and they are showing signs of infection too, so likely wont be able to help people much longer. We need the Ogawa to make haste to the colony and get this outbreak under control. It’s important we figure out what this is and why it didn’t respond to standard antivirals. I will send over the information we have, which isn’t much. Time is of the essence, Captain, people are dying. What questions do you have?”

She sat quietly while the Admiral explained about the issues on Peshka III. “Have the archaeological research teams faced any other illnesses since their arrival? And do you have the numbers for the mortality rate of this respiratory illness?”

It was disturbing that a field medic and his apprentice were trying to handle an epidemic of that size. It was no wonder the Admiral was sending help to the small colony. “As soon as we receive the information packet, we’ll set course for the Romulan Neutral Zone. Do they have any idea that Starfleet is coming to aide one of our outlying posts? If not, we’ll also contact them so there are no misunderstandings or ill feelings.”

She would be calling that staff meeting immediately so the DHs could requisition any extra supplies they would need for Peshka III. “Admiral Eling, is there anything else, any other information you’d like to pass along?”
