They were in the nebula for approximately 10 mins and the Science station began to beep.

GM Budgie

“Oh good, I love a beep,” Brad murmured.

Lt. Commander Dev Siobhan quietly stepped onto the bridge and took her station at Science 1. She tapped the console, answering the alert at her station.

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

Answering the alert brought up some background results, a very small, very brief anomaly had been detected. As soon as it began, it was over.

“Commander, I briefly detected a small anomaly, but it has already dissipated. Localized but irregular.” She paused, parsing the filtered readouts.

“Cause unknown, but I’m not reading any residual ionization or gravimetric distortion. It could have been a subspace eddy, but there is no way to be certain.”

“Work with security. I want to make sure we’re not missing anything,” Dira said.

The XO turned and looked her. “Commander, as soon as you can get a clear result, scan everything you can on that ship. We need to know what we are dealing with before we send anyone over there.”

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

“Aye, Sir,” Commander Dev replied, at the same time initiating scans.

The Ogawa moved closer and closer to the unknown ship- after a few minutes it was well within scanning range.

A scan of the plague ship would confirm that 349 people were aboard- this number dropped by two while Dev read the results. It was a medium-to large vessel with very limited combat capabilities. It was more of a transport ship rather than a combat cruiser. The ship was like nothing Dev had ever seen before. It was a technological marvel. It seemed like the ship was partially “alive” combing organic material throughout. Another important note, the scans showed that the ship had multi phasic shielding and seemed completely unaffected by the nebula.

GM Budgie

“Commander, we have 349 life signs aboard the vessel—”

She stopped. Blinked once.

“…Correction. 347.”

Brad winced.

Dira knew that they weight of deaths would hang over the crew the more they got involved and it was important to acknowledge the situation. “Shit,” she said, loud enough to be heard. She took a dee breath and blew it out.

There was a beat of silence. Then she continued, her tone tightening.

“It’s a transport-class ship. Lightly armored, no significant weapons array. But… the hull is interlaced with organic structures—symbiotic, maybe even partially sentient. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s not just advanced—it’s different. Built on principles we haven’t fully mapped.”

Brad’s ears perked up at that nugget.

She adjusted the field, eyes narrowing.

“Multiphasic shielding. It’s holding steady in the nebula—completely unaffected by the interference. They’re operating in an environment that would disrupt one of our own vessels, and doing so effortlessly.”

Her jaw tightened, just slightly.

“This wasn’t built for war, but it wasn’t built by amateurs either. And those lost life signs…” She glanced toward the XO. “If this plague is as advanced as the ship, we’re going to need more than standard protocols.”

She tapped the console again, initiating a deeper analysis.

“I’ll keep digging.”

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

“I want to know if the virus or whatever it is is impacting the organic parts of the ship,” Brad chimed in. That could be a possible vector to find a treatment.

Myqian also was thinking something similar. “It’s a good question we can ask.”

He also tapped his commbadge. =/\=Walker to triage deck. Current patient count is 347.=/\=

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

=/\=Kane here. Triage is built out for 200 beds. We are setting up secondary sickbay for additional quarantine beds, but that will drop us from 100 beds to 65. We may need to use the 60 beds in counseling if there are any more.=/\=

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

Dira nodded as her teams chatted and she turned to Walker. “Dr. Grayson has the space in psychiatry. We don’t have any serious long-term patients just now given we were at base for repairs. She and her team can double as medics as well. So put them to good use.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Brad nodded. =/\=Use whatever space you need. Draft in the psychiatry staff to help as needed as well. They should have at least enough medical training to be nurses,=/\= he replied to Kane.

=/\=Understood Cmdr. Kane out.=/\=

In addition to the basics of the nebula, scans would also show something rather odd. The nebula was 2 ly at its longest and the inner 1 ly was the most dense and turbulent. The nebula seemed on the surface to be a standard planetary nebula with evidence to suggest that there had been a second stellar remnant there, but there was no second remnant in the system. Additionally, there was hydrogen and helium present, but no carbon, oxygen and nitrogen as one would expect. The metallicity seemed oddly low as well for a nebula of this type and size. The nova remnant present is also too new to have created the nebula itself, so the question is, where is the original remnant?

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“Multiple mysteries and hundreds of lives in crisis.” the XO said while reading the scan data. “We’re gonna earn our paychecks today, ladies and gentlemen.” He tapped a few commands on his chair’s controls and then said “Science, get a small team working on the co.position of this place. Physics and astronomy specialists only, don’t pull from our life science staff. We’ll need them to work on the virus or whatever is causing the commotion over there. Security, get a layout of the interior of that ship and plan the best places for quarantine and crowd control. We should anticipate panic and fear. We don’t know who these people are, so we don’t know how they are gonna react ta us. See if we can access their logs or anything from here, too. Engineering, we are going to need full decontamination stations at every point of entry on this ship. Not just energy systems, fluid decom as well. Nothing goes out or comes in without gettin’ hosed down to their skivvies. That goes for equipment, too.” He looked at Myqian. “Captain, we really should try to keep them on their own ship. Not just for cross-contamination risks, but for their own peace of mind. The vast majority of sentient beings do better in familiar surroundings. Keeping them in the environment they know will keep stress from spiking. And some viruses thrive in high-stress environments. Until we know more of what we are dealing with, we need to keep them isolated there.”

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

Security NE Alvin Roth immediately went into action, scanning the ship to see if they could penetrate the hybrid outer shell of the ship to get a look at the layout. He pooled together data on readout of weapons systems, energy outputs and locations, and doorways/hatches.

He also sent a brief overview to Lt. Commander Zoi Haven, the Chief of Security. She immediately flew into action enabling security protocols that coincided with medical protocols in this situation. No doubt people would be scared but quarantine procedures needed to be enforced for the safety of all on board both ships.

“Aye, Commander,” Dev replied, already queuing assignments to the relevant subteams.

She tapped through the console swiftly, routing planetary physics protocols to Lab 2 and flagging Lieutenant Sayani and Crewman Tolk from the physical sciences division. They’d been running a comparative stellar decay model the day prior—she’d seen their results. Thorough. They’d pivot cleanly.

“Physics and astronomy team already assembling in Lab Two,” she said. “They’ll prioritize nebular structure, missing remnant data, and elemental composition anomalies. Life sciences will remain focused on biohazard assessment and pathogen mapping.”

“I like it, Commander. Nicely done.” the XO replied.

Her eyes flicked back to the readout of the alien vessel—still haunting in its complexity.

“As for the ship… I’ll begin a structural and systems topology scan. If their vessel is partially organic, we may find signs of viral stress or immune response in the hull itself. If the disease is affecting the ship, that may give us both a diagnostic foothold and a transmission vector.”

“Exactly my thought,” Brad said. “And if it isn’t, an opportunity to explore how it’s resistant as a way to create a treatment.”

She paused, glancing toward the forward screen. The plague ship drifted ahead like a wounded animal—foreign, fragile, and strange.

“I’ll coordinate with Medical once we have viable data.”

“Appreciate it,” Brad said.

Fingers still moving, she began isolating the multispectral scan patterns needed for internal bio-organic mapping—methodical, precise.
The science teams were in motion.
So was she.

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

The scans began to run and the computer whirled away. It took a few moments and the scan came back complete.
=^= Scan complete. Send to Science labs? =^= The computer asked the CSO.

GM Budgie

=/\=Confirmed. Forward results to Lab Two.=/\= Dev’s reply was crisp, though her gaze lingered on the sensor data long enough to confirm the first few metrics.

“Lieutenant Sayani and Crewman Tolk will have it in seconds,” she added, half to the bridge and half to herself. “They’re already mid-pivot from the stellar decay models—this will slot right into their workflow.”

Her hands moved across the console in smooth succession, setting filters to keep her own copy of the raw dataset. “I’ll stay here until we have a preliminary assessment, but if they hit something anomalous, I’ll join them in person.”

She straightened slightly, eyes lifting back toward the viewscreen and the drifting alien vessel beyond. “We’ll keep the analysis moving.”

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

Sometime later, approximately 20 mins later, the ship moved in to transporter range. The Ensign at the helm called out.
“Captain, Commander. We’re in transporter range now.”

GM Budgie

Dev’s gaze remained fixed on the vessel’s silhouette, its strange contours illuminated in the transporter’s targeting grid. The helm officer’s call barely broke her concentration.

“In range,” she repeated softly, more to herself than anyone else, before entering the final data tags needed to anchor multispectral overlays to the incoming transporter scans. “Biohazard filtration protocols should remain engaged at all times—we don’t risk contamination on preliminary transfers.”

Her comm badge chirped—an incoming message.

=^=Sutret to Commander Dev. Do you have a minute?=^=

Her fingers paused mid-motion before she tapped her comm badge, voice calm.
=/\=Of course Lieutenant. What can I do for you?=/\=

She let the channel hold open, her free hand still guiding the science teams’ feeds toward the biobanks and medical correlation queues. The dual focus was second nature: bridge in one ear, engineering in the other.

“Science maintains lock on the hull composition,” she added for the bridge crew, her tone measured. “Any attempt at transport will layer against our live bio-organic scan—if there’s immune response activity in the vessel’s structure, we’ll see it immediately.”

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

=^=I’m looking over the sensor data from the nebula, trying to devise a better way to keep our systems up and running. But as I’m looking through the scans, I’m not finding anything that should be causing the system disruptions that we’ve been getting. Have your teams had any better luck analyzing the nebula?=^=

“Thank you, Commander,” Brad said, keeping his eyes on the display showing those scan results. He trusted any result to be reported immediately, but since both the Captain and XO were also on the bridge, he had a little bit of latitude to watch the scans himself.

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

The ship was a curious mix of advanced metallurgy and bioneural components. Not only did it have bioneural circuitry, but there were bioneural fibres layered into the hull itself and seemed to be connected to tiny energy nodes that served as an advanced sensor system, and possibly even a shielding system. Almost every system seemed to be regenerative and result in little waste. The result was a highly efficient ship that was incredibly responsive.

As far as they could tell (the nebula still disrupted some of the scan results, the people from the planet Aylia did not possess transporter tech and the structure of the hull might very well interfere with any transporter attempt. Though it was hard to know for sure, it did seem that the ship was suffering some intermittent power fluctuations.

~Mischief Maker

Dira rose to her feet and drew in a deep and steadying breath. This much closer to them, she could sense these people more clearly. There was an undercurrent of despair and misery overlaid but the tiniest thread of hope. She wanted them to be able to do all they could to increase that hope. “Hail the vessel and Keeper Vell’khor. Let’s see what we can do to help these people, yeah?”

Captain Myqian, CO

“Aye Ma’am.” The Ensign at the com replied, opening a hail to the ship.
“Channel open.”

GM Budgie

Lt Sutret - CE

=/\=This is Captain Myqian with the USS Ogawa,=/\= she said, not sure if they would get visuals now that they were closer or not.

=/\=We have our medical teams in place ready to help. With your permission, I’d like to send a team over to assess how we can best help. Would that be okay, and can you tell us what your current status is?=/\=

Captain Myqian, CO

Lt. Commander Zoi Haven, CoS

OOC: Just merging the threads. :) ~Linds

OOC: Adjusting my previous reply because I somehow put it in the wrong spot.

The viewfinder worked… Just. That could be down to the nebula interfering with the Ogawa’s systems. If you squinted you could just make out the Keeper on the screen through the static and artifacts on the screen. The Keeper had long, thick, dark grey hair with tinges of silver to contrast against her light blue skin and light green eyes.

=^= This is keeper Vell’khor. Thank you for your assistance Captain. We would welcome any help you can offer. Feel free to send a team over, I’ll meet them personally at the airlock. The situation is dire, more of us are succumbing, it has spread quicker than we had anticipated. How soon can you have your people come aboard? =^= The Keeper asked looking hopeful.

GM Budgie

Dira studied her counterpart (or at least that was her impression of the Keeper’s position) and though she was deeply intrigued, the dire situation took precedence. =/\=We are deep in preparations to help. We can have a team ready shortly, but be aware that the nebula has presented some issues for us. Also, what is the composition of your atmosphere? Our crew will be in protective gear, but it’s important for any of your people that come over here that we make that work.”

Meanwhile she gave Royal a half glance and subtly pointed her finger at him. She hoped he’d understand that she wanted him to jump on getting a team to go over to get eyes and scans on the situation.

Captain Myqian, CO

The looked relieved. =^= Thank you Captain, the Ancestors have smiled on us today. We’re very fortunate you heard our call. The Nebula as you call it, does have a tendency to harm those who come in unprepared. Our atmosphere is Oxygen-Nitrogen based, I hope that won’t cause any discomfort?=^= She looked inquisitively at Dira.

Dira smiled. =/\=Ours is similar if not exactly the same. We should be fine. Either way, our team will still be wearing protective gear.=/\=

“On it.” the Scottish XO said softly. He stood up and walked towards the Security station. “Commander Haven, get me a two person security team in full biohazard kit.” He looked at the Chief of Staff. “Doctor. I’d like four of your best triage and infectious disease specialists for the Away Team.” He glanced at the Science station and added “Commander Dev, you and two others. Virology knowledge would be a boon, for certain. All of you meet me in the shuttle bay in ten minutes. Again, full containment suits and biohazard protocols. And I’m not taking the chance of beaming through that hull. We’ll dock and use the shuttle as a primary triage station.”

Brad nodded, mentally running through his roster for the best options. He would also need to balance keeping a skilled staff manning the Owie’s triage space…

=/\= Walker to Marshall and McCandless. I need you to pick one additional doctor and nurse with triage and/or infectious disease experience and report to the shuttle bay in full biohazard gear in ten minutes for an initial assessment of the ship we’re dealing with.=/\=

=^= Aye Sir, we’ll meet you there. =^= John looked for Nurse Davies and they both suited up and made their way to the Shuttlebay.

Sinclair looked at Myqian. “Captain, we made need to connect the umbilical at some point. Recommend we pre-position for that. I’ll make sure we do what we can for them before we bring anyone aboard.” and he turned and headed to the turbo lift.

Myqian nodded. “On it. And no unnecessary risks, Commander. I mean. Make sure your entire team is clear about that,” she said to Royal before focusing on the screen again.

=/\=Our team is assembling. They’ll come over by shuttle and assess the situation and make recommendations back to us about how best to proceed. In order to facilitate aide, we’re going to move our ship into a better position. It’ll allow us to connect directly if needed.”

“Helm, move us slowly into a better position, eighth impulse,” Myqian ordered.

Captain Myqian, CO

=^= Thank you Captain. Your aid is greatly appreciated. We’ll have a medical team on stand by, our healer will be there to meet them. Thank you again Captain. =^= The screen went dark.

“Eighth impulse, aye Captain.” The helmsman replied, adjusting the speed and telemetry. The ship moved into the better position, allowing for easy access, should they need to dock directly.

=^=Bridge, Engineering. We are having to keep a close eye on the systems still, we haven’t been able to completely eliminate the interference we have been getting with the ships systems. But as long as we stay on top of it, we shouldn’t have any further issues.=^=

Lt Sutret - CE

She gave a nod that Koria couldn’t see. =/\=Acknowledged. We’re going to use shuttles and not risk issues with transporters. If you can keep us mostly stable, I’ll call that a win. Good job, everyone. Bridge out.=/\=

Captain Myqian, CO

=^=Sutret to the Bridge. Hold launching those shuttles. We are headed there right now to modify their systems so they can safely fly in the nebula.=^=

Lt Sutret - CE

“Oh, yeah that’s probably a good idea,” Brad said to himself from the sensor station he was monitoring. “Still, hopefully it’s a quick fix, this is rather urgent…”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

She nodded. =/\=Acknowledged Lieutenant, but be quick about it. And focus your efforts on the away team’s shuttle first and then do our two medical runabouts and other vessels after.=/\=

=/\=Bridge to Sinclair. Gather your team, but stand by. Engineering needs to make some modifications to the shuttles. They’ll be as fast as they can.=/\=
