Alexis was in Secondary Sickbay, working as always, when the message came through from Dr. Walker to prep the triage deck. =/\=Kane to Emergency Triage Team 1. Report to Deck 14 to prep the Triage Deck.=/\=

Kane left secondary sickbay in the hands of another doctor and headed toward the lift and down to deck 14.

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

John received the page from his office. Being head nurse he was required to be alerted when an emergency occured. Triage deck, I wonder what’s going on he thought as he rose quickly from his chair. He grabbed a medical tricorder from his desk (he had one to hand at all times), put it in his belt and hurried out the door and towards Deck 14 to co-ordinate the nursing staff.

Nurse Davies tossed and turned in her sleep. She had been on double shifts for about a week and so, she had some much needed time off (a day really). She’d taken the opportunity to sleep in.
“Don’t you dare wake me up in the morning.” She’d told her Vulcan bunk mate T’Mir. She’d simply raised an eyebrow confused as to why her morning meditation at 0600 hours would wake up anyone. Nurse Davies had, fortunately, slept through T’Mir’s meditation but was woken up by the sound of the triage call.
“Miry, didn’t I tell you to not disturb me?” Miry was the nickname the nursing staff had given to T’Mir. She yawned, not realising the urgency, she rolled over and nearly fell back asleep when the realisation struck. Balls she thought sitting bolt upright. Leaping from her bed she put her uniform on, hastily tied back her long blonde hair in a bun. Brushed her teeth hurriedly and made her way down to Deck 14, not noticing the toothpaste in the corners of her mouth.

Lt. McCandless, Head Nurse

Waiting for the medical team on Deck 14 was a text message from Dr. Walker

Good morning, team.
We’re en route to a… something… in the middle of this nebula that sent a distress call because they’ve got a plague their medical team is unable to effectively treat.
We’re expecting up to 300 patients for intake, to categorize by level of infection and subsequent stage of the disease.
Full biosecurity protocols are in effect.
Triage team will be responsible for determining the most and least impacted cases, and collect samples for science to determine what we’re up against.
Load up on broad-spectrum anti-biotics and IV fluids.
Palliative care beyond that until we know what we’re dealing with and can effectuate a treatment.
Dr. Walker

Alexis read over the message, running the numbers in her head. When everyone arrived she read it to them. “Alright, let’s get started. First, let’s get this whole deck isolated for biosecurity protocols. Bio shields and aseptic entry and exit at all accesses points. Start synthesizing antibiotics and IV fluids. I need a team ready to take physiological scans so we can synthesize species specific blood types and antibiotics. I want two triage teams at transporter rooms 3 and 4. Worst cases get beamed directly to primary sickbay for isolation. When they are full, send to secondary sickbay. The rest get brought here.”

John raised an eyebrow as Dr Kane (the female one) read out the message. It sounded like they were in for a rough time of it. A plague? He nearly groaned out loud.

“We can only fit 200 beds down here. Let’s get them set up, with isolation fields ready to go. Filter Masks for everyone. We do not want this spreading to the crew. Get started.” Alexis may not be liked by many of the crew, but she worked just as hard as the rest of them to prepare the triage deck for the incoming patients.

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

John nodded and turned to the nursing staff. He spied Nurse Davies and smiled. They had recently struck up a friendship, John didn’t know but Nurse Davies was considering asking him on a date. When she could bring up the courage to ask him. John walked over to her and the rest of the nurses.
“It sounds like we’ll be in for the longhaul on this one. Let’s get to work, Nurse Davies if you could co-ordinate the set up of the beds. I’ll work on setting up the isolation fields. Any questions?” He asked and they all shook their heads. John nodded in satisfaction looking around them all and smiling.
“Good, let’s crack on. Preparation is key.” He stated and headed off to look for the Doctor setting up the isolation fields.

John McCandless, Head Nurse

Drake walked over to Alexis. “Where are we putting the other hundred? Or are we hoping to move through patients fast enough that 200 will be enough beds for triage?” His eyebrow quirked up.

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

“If necessary we can open psychiatric. That will give us 60 beds. We can also open dentistry and the morgue for a few extra beds. They all have isolated environmental controls. That will be safest for the rest of the ship. Hopefully we’ll be able to move the worst cases quickly to sickbay and that will give us the room we need.”

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

Drake nodded and started moving through procedures in his mind. “Well Dr Kane, where do you want me?”

-Lt Cmdr Drake Marshall, M.D.

“Dr. Walker wants us load up on broad-spectrum anti-biotics and IV fluids. And to prep for palliative care. If you could over see making sure all the necessary medications are are stocked,” Kane said.

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

=/\=Walker to triage deck. Current patient count is 347.=/\=

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

=/\=Kane here. Triage is built out for 200 beds. We are setting up secondary sickbay for additional quarantine beds, but that will drop us from 100 beds to 65. We may need to use the 60 beds in counseling if there are any more.=/\=

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

=/\=Use whatever space you need. Draft in the psychiatry staff to help as needed as well. They should have at least enough medical training to be nurses,=/\= Brad replied to Kane.

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

=/\=Understood Cmdr. Kane out.=/\=

=/\=Kane to Grayson. We have over 300 incoming patients. Dr. Walker said you have no long term patients and to request you prepare psychiatry for patients and that you and your staff assist with nursing or physician care as able.=/\=

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

=/\=Understood, Commander,“ Grayson replied. “My staff may not treat illness and injury the same way you do on a regular basis, but I’ve made sure they’ve kept their medical skills sharp. It would be a waste of their entire medical school education if they didn’t. Grayson out. =/\= Mariah was already up and moving from her desk, considering what coordination she would need to do with her staff.Whether she had or didn’t have other patients to attend to didn’t seem particularly important under the circumstances, but she appreciated Kane‘s consideration for her other responsibilities all the same.

=/\=Thank you Dr. Grayson. Just be aware we are preparing for a pandemic. Kane out.=/\=

She hit a comm panel, which sounded a department wide all call. “Attention all psychiatry staff, primary medical has just informed me we have 300 incoming patients. We’ve been asked to assist with triage and treatment as necessary. Please assemble in the psych conference room for additional orders and information.“

~Dr. Mariah Grayson, CoP

Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO

The closing of the channel made it clear no reply was necessary, but already Grayson was making plans in her head. Logistically speaking, it would mean protective gear and coordination with several departments just to handle the illness itself. Then, of course, there was addressing the psychological needs of not just patients themselves but their loved ones. These were the immediate priorities, but she also couldn’t forget the importance of supporting the medical staff, caring for their incoming patients, emotionally as well as practically. Just because the crew of the Ogawa was well trained, and accustomed to these sorts of emergencies didn’t mean that the obvious could be overlooked.

~Dr. MariahGrayson, COP

=/\= Walker to Marshall and McCandless. I need you to pick one additional doctor and nurse with triage and/or infectious disease experience and report to the shuttle bay in full biohazard gear in ten minutes for an initial assessment of the ship we’re dealing with.=/\=

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

=^= Aye Sir, I’ll get on it now. =^= John replied and motioned to Nurse Davies to follow him.
“Nurse Davies, we’re needed in the shuttle bay. We’ll gear up once we’re there. Follow me!” He called and hurried out towards the shuttle bay.

McCandless, Head Nurse
