Iphigenia found herself at the counseling office, seeking a continuation of her conversation with Lieutenant Nyman. Days had passed since their last talk, which had been abruptly cut short by the Chief of Security. Even so, it was a good opportunity for the counselor to get a good tour of the ship and become familiar with the security procedures. As she approached his office she rang the chime, then placed her hands behind her back and swayed on her feet as she waited to be invited in.

As the doors opened, Lieutenant Nyman was at his desk, evidently doing some kind of paperwork. In one motion he set down his PaDD and glanced up toward the door.

“Captain,” he exclaimed, practically jumping out of his chair as he stood up. It was a mixture of surprise and nervousness. Though just as quickly he seemed regain composure. His usual smile returning, Nyman walked over to the other side of his desk.

“What can I do for you?”

“I’m here to continue our conversation from the other day,” Iphigenia replied with a warm smile. “It seemed like we were getting somewhere, but things got interrupted. I hope you’re not too busy.”

“Oh, not at all,” he said, noticeably relieved, “I always have time for… whatever you need Captain.”

Iphigenia looked around for a place to sit, then sat in the nearest and first seat she spotted, “I am sorry we were not able to get through our conversation. I was really hoping to learn more about you.”

Nyman came to sit across from Iphigenia. He wasn’t sure what exactly she meant by ‘learn more about’ him. Choosing to be cautiously optimistic, he ascribed it to her just being friendly and perhaps a bit curious. Humans, after all, were often just a curious as Vendorians about new things they encounter.

“Okay,” he responded. “Yeah, that was a little unexpected the way things ended last time.”

“Indeed, and I apologize for the interruption during our previous conversation. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had new crew members, given the nature of our missions. I suppose everyone is quite curious about the new counselor who accepted an assignment on the mysterious Leviathan,” Iphigenia said with a faint chuckle. “Your office is certainly a better setting anyway. I doubt we’ll encounter as many interruptions here.”
Leaning back slightly in her chair, she continued, “As we were discussing, your background intrigued me, and I’m particularly curious about how it might influence your role as the ship’s counselor. It’s truly captivating to witness how people’s life experiences shape their identities. Additionally, I’d be interested to learn about your journey in Starfleet, especially as a Vendorian. Your unique abilities grant you the freedom to align yourself with any organization in the universe. So…why Starfleet?”

Nyman fidgeted for a moment before answering. There wasn’t a good, direct answer to that question, even if he felt like being completely honest. But building from what the Captain likely already knew would be a good start.

“Well, while finishing school I met up with a few recruiters, and they told me about the residency program through Starfleet.”

Pausing, he flashed another quick smile, “I was already interested in starting my own private practice after graduation, so I was looking for a program. It seemed like a good fit at the time.”

“I can see how that would make sense,” Iphigenia nodded thoughtfully. “A residency program with Starfleet would certainly provide you with a diverse range of experiences and challenges to prepare you for your own practice. But you chose a unique path by joining us on the Leviathan. The ship itself is an enigma, and your species, Vendorians, are quite fascinating.” Iphigenia smiled warmly. “It’s evident that you’re passionate about your role here. Your background and unique perspective are invaluable assets, and I have no doubt that you’ll make a positive impact. Is this your first ship assignment?”

“Before this I was mostly been bouncing between starbases. It might’ve been because they wanted to keep track of exactly where I was, which is harder to do on a moving ship. Making sure I didn’t… un-defect I guess.”

Nyman laughed, but it was obvious he didn’t find that idea particularly funny.

“My last assignment was a deep space outpost. I may’ve heard some rumors about the Leviathan before transferring. It’s interesting, but not really surprising this is my first ship.”

(OOC: There is a slight continuity error in an earlier post about Nyman’s previous assignment being described as a ‘ship’. That post was made before finalizing other backstory details. Consider this retconned and Nyman’s claim here as accurate. I want to clarify this because otherwise it seems like he’s lying here, and I want to be clear about what he is intentionally omitting / lying about and what is actually true. ~ Ava)

Iphigenia arched an eyebrow in surprise. “The Leviathan is your first ship assignment?” She hadn’t managed to thoroughly review his personnel file, or she would have been aware of this detail. “Well, the reputation of the Leviathan does precede it. We tend to attract those who are drawn to the mysteries of the universe, much like yourself. As for the ‘un-defecting’ aspect, I’m sure Starfleet Command values your unique skill set. Your ability to transform and adapt is an asset in multiple ways. The Leviathan stands as a vessel of discovery and understanding. Moreover, your shapeshifting capability has greatly intrigued our science department. They’re eager to delve deeper into the realm of Vendorian biology. Furthermore, I believe your prior experience on starbases and deep space outposts will serve as an advantage as we navigate the uncharted on this ship. We’re you a counselor on the Starbase as well?”
