The diagnostics of the patient in front of her showed two ruptures to his left lung, three cracked ribs and one completely broken that had pierced his spleen.
SGM
With one hand in the patient’s chest, she swore under her breath as Alan showed her the scan results. She knew she only had minutes before this poor man bled to death so she worked as quickly as she could. She located the broken rib and skillfully extracted it, making sure not to damage the spleen further. “Suction,” she ordered, not taking her eyes off the wound. Alan quickly cleared the area of blood so Charlie could get a good look at the injury. She ran another scan to determine whether she needed to remove the spleen or if she could just suture it before she repaired the broken ribs and lacerations to the lung. “How’s he doing Alan?” she asked as she waited for the scan results to come through.

It took a few moments before the lump of counselor uncurled itself in the Turbolift and cautiously looked up, sincerely hoping that it was still all part of the nightmare that she had been disturbed from. It wasn’t. In fact, she briefly wished she had kept her head down as she took in the scene in sickbay around her. Stumbling to her feet, she brushed blood and sweat matted hair from her face and shuffled toward a familiar doctor.
“Charlie, what can I do to help?” she questioned in a tone that could only be described as a whimper as she once again glanced around the bustling room. Her face was ashen and she was visibly trembling where she stood.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Charlie breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the familiar voice of the counselor and turned to greet her. “You look like I feel…” she said as she noticed the injury to the counselor’s head, beckoning young Nurse Michaels over. As Michaels ran a quick scan to make sure there was nothing more serious than the laceration, Charlie quickly cast her eye around sickbay. She clocked the young woman who had brought the burn victim in with her current patient who looked like she was about to pass out. Charlie picked up a spare tricorder with her free hand and passed it to Katie. “Sorry counselor, I know this isn’t your area of expertise but I need all hands on deck, please could you scan the young woman in the corner and bring me the results back?” she replied as she glanced at her current patient’s scan results coming through. Deep down she knew that they wouldn’t be able to help all the patients pouring through the doors but she was going to do her damn hardest to save as many as she could. She gulped as her eyes locked with one of the burn victims. She felt a familiar lump begin to rise in the back of her throat but she gritted her teeth and pushed it down again. She felt the sweat began to trickle down her forehead as the pain in her side intensified but took a pained breath and quickly turned her attention back to her patient.
Dr Bailey
The patient before her was stabilized, for now. His spleen could be repaired with a muscular regenerator and they’d be able to graft tissue and grow a new rib. Blood loss was still a concern.
SGM
Charlie breathed a quick sigh of relief as the patient began to stabilise but she knew he wasn’t out of the woods yet and she had a sickbay full of people that needed urgent attention. “Michaels!” she called, a little more abruptly than she had intended but the experienced nurse was thankfully well used to how things worked in sickbay in a crisis and didn’t take it personally and dutifully appeared at her side.
“He’s stable for now, give him 4 units of blood, fix the laceration in his spleen with the muscular regenerator and close him up, we’ll deal with the missing rib later, just keep him sedated and restrained in case he does wake up, I don’t want him leaping off the bed.” Michaels bit her lip and nodded slowly. Charlie quickly put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “I know this isn’t something I would normally ask you to do but I know you’re capable, I’ve seen you work, you can do this.” she said confidently as she slid the surgical tray across to her. “If you run into any problems just call me,” she added as she went to check on the counselor.
On the way she grabbed a couple of hyposprays and deftly clicked a vial in place on each one as she made her way over.
Katie couldn’t seem to form enough words to make an informed response so she simply accepted the medical tricorder that Bailey handed to her. With the initial adrenaline rush wearing off, her head was beginning to hurt… a lot. Feeling a twinge of darkness at the corner of her vision, she stubbornly pushed it away. The nurse’s scans would reveal a moderate concussion from what was clearly an impact with some kind of furniture. Thankfully, there was no skull fracture or anything more serious than that.
Katie was about to turn to the indicated patient when both Bailey’s body language with the burn victims and the favoring of her side drew her attention. Mentally, she chastised herself for not realizing that this would be a horrific nightmare for the young ensign, given her past. The physiological response of pain was more important, though, and she drew herself away from Bailey’s mental status to point the medical tricorder at her for a quick scan.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Bailey’s heart rate, pulse and breathing were markedly elevated which wasn’t exactly surprising in the circumstances. The scan would also show a couple of cracked ribs, a severely bruised kidney and some internal bleeding from a small laceration in her liver. It wasn’t life threatening yet but would need treatment sooner rather than later.
As Charlie paced across to Nunn, she promptly handed her a hypospray as she brought the second one up to the counselor’s neck. “Don’t worry, it’s just a pain killer, no arguments. I figured neither of us are going to be much use if we can’t stand up…” she concluded as she released the medication into Katie’s neck, not waiting for permission and then cocked her head to one side for the counselor to administer the second shot to her.
Dr Bailey
Katie’s body went stiff as she felt the hypospray connect with her neck before she had had a chance to protest the application of the medication. Her breathing increased rapidly for a few moments, her pupils dilating as though she was on the verge of a panic attack, before she managed to reign in her extreme response at the unexpected touch. She gave Bailey a small but strained smile and nod and forced herself to look down at the tricorder in her hand.
Charlie was a bit taken aback by Katie’s intense reaction and put a reassuring hand on her arm. “I’m sorry counselor, I didn’t mean to startle you, are you alright?” she asked in a concerned voice. Clearly she had touched a nerve in the young woman although she wasn’t sure what had prompted it. Taking a moment, she locked eyes with Nunn trying to gauge whether she was going to hold it together or not.
“It looks like you’ll need some attention yourself here shortly,” she mumbled, turning the display to show it to the doctor.
Charlie winced as she saw her scan results, mildly annoyed that the counselor was checking up on her but secretly grateful that she had. She gently probed her tender abdomen, gritting her teeth from the pain. She plucked a pale yellow vial of Lectrazine from her medkit and clicked it into a hypospray, administering it herself along with the pain killer. She gave Katie a weak smile and nodded. “I know,” she replied quietly as the medication quickly began to dull the pain. “That will keep it at bay for now, as soon as we’ve got these good folks patched up I promise I’ll get it sorted,” she added gently, hoping she could hold out that long.
The unconscious form of Orin moaned and stirred. He was in sickbay because the section he’d been in went from standard environmental conditions to a moment of blistering heat then to seconds of airless freezing cold. He had burns and frostbite and it was a wonder that he hadn’t been spaced by the incident.
Orin, CE
Katie’s attention quickly snapped to the biobed nearby as she heard a sound coming from it. She looked back at Bailey, bowing to this being her domain in this moment of crisis. Her eyes squinted slightly as she took in the burned and frostbitten form in front of her and then her head cocked to the side. “Charlie, I think that’s the Chief Engineer!” she exclaimed as she pieced together a recognition of his face.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Charlie quickly waved Alan over to deal with their other patient as they quickly made their way over to Orin. Pushing her own discomfort to the side, Charlie flipped open her tricorder and began to scan him as she gently put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s alright Chief, you’re in sickbay,” she said in a quiet and soothing tone.
Every instinct in her wanted to recoil as she looked at his burnt skin but she clenched her jaw and focused on the job at hand. She handed the tricorder to Nunn to continue scanning then quickly loaded a hypospray with 5 ccs of Kelotane for his burns and pressed it into the engineer’s neck, followed by a hefty dose Bicaridine to ease his pain.
Charlie picked up a small jar of dermaline gel and gulped as she looked down again at Orin’s charred skin. She looked up at Katie, her eyes welling up and passed it over to the counselor. “I’m sorry counselor, do you mind?” she asked hopefully, aware that her own reaction would be too much to handle. “Just a thin layer applied to the burnt skin…” she added apologetically. As she looked around sickbay, she knew she would probably have to suck it up and do it before the day was up but whilst she had Katie around she wanted to make every effort she could to keep it together.
As she waited for the scan results to check for any further injuries, she administered a dose of tissue plasminogen activator and heparin, a very old but still effective treatment for frostbite. “Can you remember what happened sir?” she asked gently, glad that she had the counselor on hand.
