As Charlie paced across to Nunn, she promptly handed her a hypospray as she brought the second one up to the counselor’s neck. “Don’t worry, it’s just a pain killer, no arguments. I figured neither of us are going to be much use if we can’t stand up…” she concluded as she released the medication into Katie’s neck, not waiting for permission and then cocked her head to one side for the counselor to administer the second shot to her.

Katie’s body went stiff as she felt the hypospray connect with her neck before she had had a chance to protest the application of the medication. Her breathing increased rapidly for a few moments, her pupils dilating as though she was on the verge of a panic attack, before she managed to reign in her extreme response at the unexpected touch. She gave Bailey a small but strained smile and nod and forced herself to look down at the tricorder in her hand.

Charlie was a bit taken aback by Katie’s intense reaction and put a reassuring hand on her arm. “I’m sorry counselor, I didn’t mean to startle you, are you alright?” she asked in a concerned voice. Clearly she had touched a nerve in the young woman although she wasn’t sure what had prompted it. Taking a moment, she locked eyes with Nunn trying to gauge whether she was going to hold it together or not.

Katie shook her head as though to dismiss any concern that Charlie might had, frustrated with herself for reacting as violently as she had. She quickly broke the eye contact and focused on the tricorder display readout in front of her.

“It looks like you’ll need some attention yourself here shortly,” she mumbled, turning the display to show it to the doctor.

Charlie winced as she saw her scan results, mildly annoyed that the counselor was checking up on her but secretly grateful that she had. She gently probed her tender abdomen, gritting her teeth from the pain. She plucked a pale yellow vial of Lectrazine from her medkit and clicked it into a hypospray, administering it herself along with the pain killer. She gave Katie a weak smile and nodded. “I know,” she replied quietly as the medication quickly began to dull the pain. “That will keep it at bay for now, as soon as we’ve got these good folks patched up I promise I’ll get it sorted,” she added gently, hoping she could hold out that long.

Falling back into the urgency of the situation around them, Katie raised an eyebrow at Bailey. “I’m going to keep an eye on you and hold you to that, Doctor,” she commented, both from the personal side of not wanting her friend (were they friends now?) to be harmed but also because the ship desperately needed all hands on deck and an injured doctor wasn’t going to help.

The unconscious form of Orin moaned and stirred. He was in sickbay because the section he’d been in went from standard environmental conditions to a moment of blistering heat then to seconds of airless freezing cold. He had burns and frostbite and it was a wonder that he hadn’t been spaced by the incident.

Katie’s attention quickly snapped to the biobed nearby as she heard a sound coming from it. She looked back at Bailey, bowing to this being her domain in this moment of crisis. Her eyes squinted slightly as she took in the burned and frostbitten form in front of her and then her head cocked to the side. “Charlie, I think that’s the Chief Engineer!” she exclaimed as she pieced together a recognition of his face.

Charlie quickly waved Alan over to deal with their other patient as they quickly made their way over to Orin. Pushing her own discomfort to the side, Charlie flipped open her tricorder and began to scan him as she gently put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s alright Chief, you’re in sickbay,” she said in a quiet and soothing tone.

Every instinct in her wanted to recoil as she looked at his burnt skin but she clenched her jaw and focused on the job at hand. She handed the tricorder to Nunn to continue scanning then quickly loaded a hypospray with 5 ccs of Kelotane for his burns and pressed it into the engineer’s neck, followed by a hefty dose Bicaridine to ease his pain.

Katie accepted the tricorder and carefully ran it over Orin’s form, making sure that Bailey could see whatever information was indicated on it. She kept a careful eye on the ensign, imagining that a burn victim like this could bring back some seriously terrible memories.

Charlie picked up a small jar of dermaline gel and gulped as she looked down again at Orin’s charred skin. She looked up at Katie, her eyes welling up and passed it over to the counselor. “I’m sorry counselor, do you mind?” she asked hopefully, aware that her own reaction would be too much to handle. “Just a thin layer applied to the burnt skin…” she added apologetically. As she looked around sickbay, she knew she would probably have to suck it up and do it before the day was up but whilst she had Katie around she wanted to make every effort she could to keep it together.

“Absolutely,” Katie instantly replied, both reassured to be able to help Bailey out in an emotionally traumatic moment and because it gave her something to do other than wave a tricorder around. She carefully returned the medical tricorder to a nearby station and took the gel from the doctor. Carefully working her way from Orin’s top to bottom, she applied the designated thin layer carefully, hoping that it wouldn’t cause the sedated officer too much pain or discomfort.

As she waited for the scan results to check for any further injuries, she administered a dose of tissue plasminogen activator and heparin, a very old but still effective treatment for frostbite. “Can you remember what happened sir?” she asked gently, glad that she had the counselor on hand.

Finishing her task, Katie put away the gel and ensured her hands were free of any remnants of it. She kept her ear out to listen to the officer’s response to Bailey’s question.
