Ensign Shau looked at his PADD again, familiarizing himself with the layout and specifications of the Chimera. He’d never served on a Mjolnir class ship before, and the ‘saucer only’ design was new to him.MJ was sitting in the crew mess hall on deck 21, looking through the device as he ate the last of his meal. He was still wiped out from the medical treatment he’d received on the Tribute, and the doc had told him to eat and replenish his energy. Truth be told, the session with the Counselor this morning has taken a bit out of me as well.
Ensign Shau had another appointment to keep, so he cleaned up the remains of his meal and set off for Alpha Sickbay on deck 3. That’s where he’d was told to find the Chief Medical Officer.
The Risian Ensign was more confident in this meeting than in the last. He’d been knocked unconscious while evacuating the Pickett, and his crewmates had dragged him the last few meters to the shuttle and saved his life. The doctor on the Tribute said he’d had a concussion, a few broken bones, and multiple lacerations. All of those injuries had been treated, but MJ could swear the left side of his face was still tender. Phantom pains, maybe?
While a boarding mission or heavy workouts in the gym might be a bad idea for a few days, MJ was confident he would be cleared for normal shipboard duty.
He checked in with the nurse when he arrived at Alpha Sickbay. “Excuse me Sir. I’m Ensign Shau. I’m here to check in with Lt Burcham.”
Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera
After a few moments a young medical officer wandered by and stopped short seeing the ensign waiting there. They looked around, slightly wide-eyed for a moment. Seeing that there were no other officers free they sighed briefly and then tentatively approached.
“Um, hello… I’m NE Goode… I mean I’m a doctor… Dr. Goode. Can I help you with something?”
NE Goode - A Doctor
Ensign Shau turned to the somewhat harried-looking doctor. He’d had days like that himself and could sympathize with the officer’s current predicament. Some days on a starship are far more hectic than others. MJ decided to do what he could to make this easy on his fellow Ensign.
“I’m Ensign Shau, a new check-in from the Pickett, by way of the Tribute.” He tried to keep his thoughts from his former ship and quickly handed his PADD to the Doctor. “The files you have access to are probably slightly out of date, but my recent treatments by the doctors on the Tribute are on here.”
MJ waited quietly to give the young doctor the chance to review his file.

Doctor Goode glanced through the contents of the PaDD quickly before looking back up at Ensign Shau.
“Well…these all seem to be in order. Should I run a few scans? I probably should run a few scans,” they said, nodding more to themselves than to the Ensign. “If you wouldn’t mind taking a seat on this biobed I’ll grab a tricorder. Shouldn’t take too much time but since you came all the way down here we might as well.”
The doctor gestured to one of the biobeds and then grabbed a medical tricorder from a nearby stations. Returning to the bed they brought up Ensign Shau’s record on the biobed and prepared to complete the brief physical.
NE Goode - A doctor
MJ managed a ghost of a smile as the doctor did his best to handle everything. “Sounds good, Doctor. I think I can survive sitting in a Biobed for a few minutes” And Ensign Shau wouldn’t mind the chance to rest a bit. He was fit for duty… in his lay opinion… but he was by no means 100%.
“You do seem a little understaffed at the moment. I’m told the Chimera got a sample of that… stuff… earlier. Has Medical been studying it with the Science department?”
Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera
Dr. Goode tapped a few settings and opened the tricorder, pulling out the wand, nodding briefly. “Oh yes they are. Not me, of course, which is… fine. Its not like I wrote several research papers on exobiology at the Academy or anything.”
He began moving the wand methodically over the Ensign, glancing at the readings as they came up. “Any concerns that you’ve noticed since your last physical on the Tribute?”
NE Goode - A doctor
Again, MJ could sympathize with Dr. Goode. It was difficult to be on the fringe of big events and unable to contribute.
The thought of hiding his symptoms appeared and vanished in an instant. Ensign Shau wouldn’t jeopardize the mission for his own ego.
“Just some general weariness, which the doctor said was normal after my treatments. I went through a good amount of osteogenic stimulation and dermal regeneration in a short period of time. Not to mention cortical stimulation to treat a concussion.”
Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera
“Um… yes, that all seems right,” the doctor nodded while looking over the scan results. Then they looked up at the ensign thoughtfully as if trying to find the answer to something in his face. “Sleep… what about sleep? How has that been going since all of your medical work was done?”
NE Goode - A doctor
MJ’s jaw tightened and he kept himself from shooting off a terse comment directed at Dr Goode. “Doc… I was injured on the Pickett just a short time ago. I’m one of the survivors that escaped on the shuttles with Commander Thol, and under the protection of Chimera’s own fighter wing.”
Ensign Shau paused and allowed himself a few breaths to regain his composure. He knew it wasn’t the medical Ensign’s fault… MJ just didn’t want to rehash the incident yet again. “I just woke up on the Tribute earlier today, so no, I don’t know how all these treatments are impacting my sleep. If that information is important, I’ll be happy to maintain a log of my sleep patterns or anything else and check in with your team at whatever interval you deem appropriate.”
OOC: For a NE I’m really digging poor, overworked Dr. Goode.
Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera
Doctor Goode stepped back, eyes wide. “Apologies, Ensign… I… well…actually no! It’s my job to make sure you and this crew are safe. I know how you security types can be. If you can keep upright for half a second you think you’re ready for duty.”
He took a few deep breaths, somewhat surprised by his own outburst. “Listen, Ensign. I know you were injured, I read the files you gave me. I just want to make sure you don’t injure yourself further. The scans seem to be fine… if you tell me everything else is fine then I’ll sign off on this. But, please come back if something feels off. I don’t need to you to keep a log of your sleep, but pay attention to any disturbances.”
He tapped a few buttons on the biobed control and then turned back Ensign Shau, “Not everything shows up on a biobed scan, you know.”
NE Goode - A doctor
MJ mentally kicked himself. He’d tried to keep his temper contained but he’d managed to lash out anyway. “No, Doctor, my apologies. You’re just doing your job. And no… I’m not trying to be cleared for full duty. I have no business walking a security patrol or being part of a boarding party in the near future.”
While he would love to have been part of the away team going to the Pickett, he knew he wasn’t ready. He couldn’t in good conscience put the mission at risk by hiding his physical restrictions. And I’m not emotionally ready for that either.
“Dr. Goode, I’m only trying to be cleared for console duty. I feel that if I can man one of the tactical stations… well, then I can contribute to the mission without risking my health.”
He looked the medical Ensign in the eye. “I think that is a compromise that support both of our goals.”
Ensign MJ Shau - Security Officer - USS Chimera
Dr. Goode visibly relaxed at the Ensign’s words. “Ok, Ensign, I think you’re right about that.”
He made a few notes on in the record on the biobed and then turned back to Shau with a half smile. “I meant what I said about coming back if anything feels off. I also suggest you find your way to the counseling suite sooner rather than later. I’ve cleared you for console duty. Come back and see one of the nurses in 72 hours and if everything still comes up negative you’ll be clear for full duty.”
He turned to leave and then stopped, turning to look back at Shau, “I am sorry about the Pickett.”
