Ensign S.A. McIntyre approached the XO’s ready room, datapad in hand, uniform crisp. He paused at the threshold, then entered with a controlled, professional stride.
“Lieutenant Commander Grady,” he began, coming to attention.
“Ensign Samuel A. McIntyre, reporting in with the current security status, sir.” He tapped the datapad lightly.
“CIC watch rotations are fully staffed and operating at standard readiness. Tactical and sensor logs show no anomalies since the previous report. Patrols on Decks 3 through 7 are completed, with minor environmental breaches on Deck 5 corrected and logged. All phaser lockers and access points have been inventoried and secured, and departmental personnel are up to date on their duty certifications and drills.
“Additionally, preliminary scans indicate no unauthorized presence aboard or in adjacent sectors. I will continue to monitor for potential threats and provide updates as directed. All incidents and routine checks are logged in the departmental security records for review.”
McIntyre maintained a steady stance, hands at his sides, waiting for acknowledgment while keeping his tone professional and concise.

Finn glanced up from what he was doing to acknowledge the other officer, taking in the imposing form and listening attentively as he gave a report.

“At ease, Ensign,” he said with a smile. “I appreciate the attention to detail in those reports. I’m sure Lt Reid is excited to have you on board. Having a good staff sure makes life run a whole lot smoother.”

As he regarded Ensign McIntyre a thought seemed to pop into his mind, “Actually, Ensign, if you have a minute why don’t you take a seat? Might as well take some time to get acquainted. I’m used to a much smaller crew on my past ship.”

He gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk.

Ensign McIntyre inclined his head once, posture straight but no longer rigid.
“Aye, sir.”
He stepped forward with measured confidence and took the offered seat, resting his hands neatly on his knees rather than sprawling back. Even at ease, he carried himself like a man accustomed to responsibility.
“I appreciate that, sir. USS Chimera is a different scale from my previous assignment as well. Larger crew, broader operational tempo, more moving parts. That cuts both ways—greater capability, but also greater strain points.”
He allowed a faint, professional smile.
“Security runs best when it’s invisible. If we’re doing our job correctly, Command rarely has to think about us. My goal is to make sure Lieutenant Reid—and you—never have to.”
He shifted slightly, relaxed but attentive.
“My last posting had a crew complement under two hundred. You learn every name. You know who’s squared away and who needs watching. Here, that kind of familiarity takes deliberate effort. I’ve already begun reviewing department cross-assignments and duty rotations to identify potential leadership gaps or fatigue risks.”
His tone remained steady, confident without arrogance.
“With a crew this size, sir, cohesion doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built. I intend to make sure Security sets the example.”
He met Finn’s gaze directly.

Finn leaned back in his chair and considered the Ensign’s words. “Well, I can tell we will be in good hands with you in the security department. Just remember, when you’re looking for leadership gaps and fatigue risks to see your fellow officers in there too.”

He held the Ensign’s gaze as he continued, “Give yourself the space to relax a little bit, we aren’t on duty 24/7.”

After a brief pause he leaned forward again and rested his elbows on the desk. “I’ve read through your file a little bit, I see you were a marine prior to this assignment. Why the change, if you don’t mind my prying?”
