Chris arrived at the XO’s office, straightened his Uniform and rang the chime, reporting to the XO wouldn’t normally have to report to the First officer , but as there was no counselor onboard that he could discern anyway, he thought the XO might be a good stand inEnsign Chris Taylor
SecurityEnjoying a moment of quiet contemplation, Nyx jumped when the chime sounded. Giving herself a sound shake, she smoothed her uniform top as she stood. “Come.” The doors parted to reveal an Ensign awaiting entrance.
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS Memorial“Hello Commander, i’m Ensign Chris Taylor, i just transferred onto the ship , as i can’t go through my psych eval due to their not being a counselor onboard, i thought i would come and report to you.........i hope that was ok , last thing i want to do is upset the XO on my first day”
Ensign Chris Taylor
Security“Come in, Ensign.” Qyra looked over the new officer and wondered if she had ever been as ‘green’ as he was. With an internal sigh, she realized she had, it just happened when she was younger than him. “Yes, we are currently without a counselor, but the Captain and I are hoping to solve that problem shortly. Please have a seat.” She motioned to the chair opposite her desk.
She sat also, and pulled up his file on her monitor. After a quick scan, she turned her blue-green gaze on him. “I see this is your first posting out of the Academy. Life on a ship is quite different than living on a station or planet. How do you think you’ll fare?”
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS MemorialChris took the seat the Commander offered
“Well there was the time i spent on the Challenger, i know it’s not the same thing”
He paused for a couple of seconds then continued
“I’m sure i’ll be fine, just takes a bit of getting used to i guess”
Ensign Chris Taylor
SecurityThat brought a small lift to the right side of Nix’s mouth. It was the beginnings of a smile, but one that wouldn’t be realized fully. She’d seen what happened when someone couldn’t accept what living in space required. It wasn’t pretty, and resulted in them being red flagged to planet life. “I hope you’re right. As I’m new to the ship, I’m not sure how much I can tell you about her if you have questions, but I have read up on her, so I have all the facts. Your record looks fine. Have you had a chance to meet your DH yet?”
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS MemorialChris decided not to be nosey about this other crew member, it wasn’t his place to know things he wasn’t present for
“No it’s ok , it’s not my place to know private things about other people, As for DH, I just came from meeting Lt Gainn”
Ensign Chris Taylor
SecurityShe nodded. “I’m curious as to your take on our Chief of Security?” Normally, one would wait until Taylor had a chance to work with him for at least a couple of weeks, but first impressions also had their place.
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS Memorial“He seems.......a little ecentric but otherwise seems like a good person”
Chris said reluctantly, he hadn’t had much chance to get to know Lt Gainn yet, that will change with time of course.
Ensign Chris Taylor
SecurityShe’d thought there might be more to his opinion, but time would tell. “I’m sure he is. That question was for my own benefit. I’m working on adjusting expectations, personal and professional.” Qyra leaned back in her chair. “As far as what we expect from you—it’s very simple. Do your job, follow the rules and if you see something unusual or needs attention, let someone know.”
She paused for a moment and studied Taylor. “Do you have any questions for me before I release you for duty?”
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS MemorialChris smiled
“I didn’t think it was anything more”
He paused for a second or two mentally debating weather or not to ask his question but then went ahead anyway
“I have just one question, you’re Fynarian right, part of a warrior caste, would you be willing to be my sparring partner......i promise to go easy on you”
He said with a cheeky smile he of course was confident in his combat skills, afterall he excelled at CQC at the academy and he liked to keep in shape, a sparring partner would allow him to get to know the XO and keep in shape at the same time.
“What am i thinking, you’re the first officer, you probably don’t want to be seen with an Ensign in your offtime”
Ensign Chris Taylor
SecurityOOC: Bump for XO :-)
Ensign Chris Taylor
SecurityOOC: Chris, I posted two days ago. You shouldn’t be bumping me this soon as our posting limits are 5/7/10
OOC: You’re right, sorry about that , I saw you posted so I thought you might have missed it, my bad
IC: It was the first time she’d ever been asked to spar by an Ensign. Qyra looked him over now, sizing him up. He had close to a foot in height on her and 100 pounds. She would have the advantage of agility, but unless they used weapons, he would always have the upper hand. “Your rank has nothing to do with my decision as we would be off duty and working out. I’m not sure I want to commit to being your partner indefinitly, but one session might be interesting.”
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS MemorialChris inclined his head slightly in acknowledgment, accepting her assessment without protest.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said evenly. “That’s all I’m asking for—one session.”
There was no bravado in his tone, only quiet certainty.
“I understand the differences in our builds and experience,” Chris continued. “This isn’t about proving anything. I’m looking to improve—and to learn.”
He met her gaze briefly, then returned to regulation posture.
“Whatever rules you set, I’ll follow them.”
Ensign Chris Taylor
Security“This is your idea so come up with a place and time. When we get there, present the rules you would like and if I think we need to compromise, I’ll let you know. Now, any further questions?” Her face was neutral, as was her voice. There was no challenge, just a normal conversational tone.
Commander Qyra Nyx
Executive Officer USS Memorial
“Of course I will,” Chris said with a smile as he rose from his chair.
“Now I need my medical,” he added, already heading for the door. The evaluation was the last requirement standing between him and officially beginning his duties as a Security Ensign aboard the USS Memorial.
As the doors slid shut behind him, Chris felt a quiet sense of readiness settle in. One final step—then he would be exactly where he was meant to be.
