Just as quickly as he has disappeared on the Memorial, Nightroad appeared in an empty room. The walls curved in a perfect circle, about 5 metres wide, with no sign of any doorway. The only object in the room was a round drum, which responded to the Captain’s presence by shimmering, and starting to change shape. It was almost as if it was made from grains of sand, that started to pulsate across the whole mass. Seconds later, he was standing in front of a what seemed to be a poor imitation of the human form.

Cain was confused for a moment but that passed. As he looked at what might be called a human form, Cain said sternly, “My name is Captain Cain Travers Nightroad of the USS Memorial, a United Federation of Planets starship on a peaceful mission to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go when no one has gone before.”
Cain stood firmly after saying all that and waited for what might come next from the hosts that brought him to where he was.

“Language strange, without rhyme, broken.” replied the humanoid figure, without moving its lips. It continued to stand there, as silence descended over the room. Moments later the voice returned. “Perhaps with images, understanding can be achieved.” Seconds later, a 3D visualisation appeared in the room.
The visualisation first showed a humanoid, space faring civilisation, journeying out to the stars. As well as different ships, the images also showed working robotic systems that supported the humanoids, often being sent out to explore dangerous situations and deep space. The technology was clearly more advanced that the Federations, with the ability for ships to put entire ships into stasis so that they could be studied by the humanoids in a far more safe and comfortable setting.
The images changed to a science lab, where a number of scientists were working over a device that looked similar to the cube the Memorial had found, just more rudimentary. It was clear that they were the inventors of the device, as future images showed them using it to explore unknown parts of space, possibly even other universes. “Study,” the humanoid simply said.
The images changed again, this time to an explosion of one of the humanoid ships, causing significant disruption in the space-time continuum. “Accident,” it stated, in a monotoned voice. Another image showed the cube drifting in space, before being beamed aboard by a Federation transporter beam, and another image showed the ISS Memorial. “Invaded”.
The images changed again, this time to a fleet of ships that had appeared in the humanoids space. They were pushed back ships piloted by the robots, who managed to retrieve the cube from the alternate universe ships. Suddenly the image changed again, showing one of the robot ships spinning out of control, energy arcing across its hull. Internal images of the ship showed the Cube, rigged as a booby trap by the ISS Memorial in case it fell into the wrong hands, before the ship disappeared.
Finally, the images showed the USS Memorial, alongside an image of the ISS Memorial. “Same, but not.” the humanoid said.
