Lieutenant Marcus Kane stepped out of the counselor’s office with a quiet nod of thanks before allowing the doors to close behind him. The evaluation had gone much as he had expected—professional, thoughtful, and another necessary step in becoming part of the USS Manhattan’s crew.

Consulting the day’s schedule on his PADD, his next appointment awaited in Sickbay. Like the psychological evaluation before it, the medical examination was a standard requirement for newly assigned officers. It was routine, but Marcus had long since learned that routine procedures often served the most important purposes.

The journey through the ship gave him another opportunity to familiarise himself with the Manhattan’s layout. Crew members passed in both directions, each absorbed in their own duties as preparations continued around them. Marcus acknowledged those who met his gaze with a polite nod before continuing on his way.

Arriving outside Sickbay, he paused briefly to straighten his uniform jacket before pressing the entry chime. Once granted permission, he stepped inside, allowing his eyes a moment to adjust to the brightly lit medical facility.

Holding his transfer PADD comfortably at his side, Marcus waited patiently until he could address a member of the medical staff.

“Lieutenant Marcus Kane,” he introduced himself in his usual calm tone. “I’ve recently reported aboard as Chief Intelligence Officer. I’m here for my boarding medical examination.”

With that, he fell silent, content to wait for whatever instructions came next.

A dark haired, dark skinned petite young nurse approached Kane and introduced herself.

“Hello, Lt. Kane, I’m nurse Knight. All of our doctors are currently with other patients at the moment, but if you’d follow me to the waiting area, someone will be with you shortly.”

She turned and led the way to a small waiting area with chairs and a small replicator. “Please have a seat. You can help yourself to the replicator if you’d like.”

Before turning to leave, she looked down at the PADD in her hand and added, “You’ll be seeing Dr. Kildare. He’ll be with you in a few moments.”

NE Nurse Knight.

Marcus inclined his head appreciatively as the nurse directed him toward the waiting area.

“Thank you, Nurse Knight.”

He followed at an unhurried pace, taking in the layout of Sickbay as they walked. Like every medical facility he’d served aboard, it was orderly and efficient, though each carried its own subtle character. The Manhattan’s was no exception.

Reaching the waiting area, Marcus glanced briefly toward the replicator before deciding against it. If the doctor was expected shortly, there was little point in making himself too comfortable.

“Dr. Kildare,” he repeated with a polite nod. “Understood.”

With that, he took a seat, setting his PADD neatly on the chair beside him. While waiting, his attention naturally drifted to the activity around Sickbay. Medical staff moved with practiced purpose between biobeds and diagnostic stations, each focused on their responsibilities. Years in Intelligence had made observation second nature, but Marcus was careful not to stare. Instead, he simply watched the quiet rhythm of the department, already forming a favorable impression of its professionalism.

Content to wait his turn, he folded his hands in his lap and allowed his thoughts to turn toward the duties that awaited him once his boarding formalities were complete.

The door to the CMO’s office to the right swished open and a Trill woman stepped out. She wore a medical uniform and had two full pips at her collar. She was reading a something on a pad when she noticed somebody sitting in the uncomfortable chairs of the waiting area in her peripheral vision.

She stopped and looked up. One green and one amber eye fell on Marcus and her initially slightly confused look cleared into a smile.

“Hello there.” she said. “I’m sorry officer, it’s all still quite unorganised here. Whom are you waiting for if I may ask?” she said in a pleasantly deep timbre voice for a woman.

Dr Doctra, CMO
