She grinned. “Thank you. I’ve had four years of practice, but I’ve only recently tried going without the universal translator where I can.”

The Zaharan tilted her head and eyed him curiously. “You came in really angry and now you are smiling. Have you forgiven your friend for the joke?”

~Ensign Ka’Sora

Striker laughed and nodded.

“Sometimes I take myself way too seriously, that’s why my friends keep doing things like this…”

Striker leaned forwards as if to comically pretend to share a secret.

”....Besides I just remembered, it’s my turn to get him next!”

Striker looked down at his attire.

“You know I’ve always found these gi to be less comfortable than the uniform? Plus a big white target makes for an easier kill than the black and gold.”

Striker’s eyes widened.

“You know way back when my great grandmother was in Starfleet Security wore bright red shirts? They may as well have painted a bullseye on them and put a flashing light on their heads!”

  • Ensign Striker

“Plus the red hides the blood,” she deadpanned before lifting her water glass to her lips and taking a sip. Ka’Sora managed to keep a straight face, but her golden eyes glinted with amusement.

“The… gi. Is it a common garment?”

~Ensign Ka’Sora

Striker smiled at the blood comment.

“It is an ancient uniform used in the practice of many human martial arts.... To be honest I ignored most of the history lessons as I just enjoyed the fighting.”

Striker felt a pang of regret as he’d often blown through things so fast that he missed the actual joy of learning.

He tapped the side of his cup.

“I think I need another one of these, can I get you something from the replicator?”

  • Ensign Striker

Ka’Sora gave it some thought. “Actually, yes. I wouldn’t mind a mint tea, thank you.” It was one of the drinks she had come to enjoy in her time in Starfleet.

While he grabbed their drinks, she pulled over the PADD where she was planning the dinner and started adding a few more ideas. She didn’t have anything truly concrete, but she was starting to lean towards the idea of doing it on the holodeck, even if that meant not all the food was cooked from scratched .

~Ensign Ka’Sora

Striker waited for the glass to dematerialise before ordering.

“Root beer cold and a mint tea.”

The replicator produced a glass of root beer & a steaming cup of mint tea, Striker had never met anyone of Ka’Sora’s species before and he supposed it very unlikely he would ever meet another one who would order a mint tea.

He chuckled to himself as he carried the drinks over to the table, he could see Ka’Sora was back on the PADD.

“Here we go, one minute tea.”

He placed it down in front of her.

“Thank you,” Ka’Sora said, sliding the hot cup to herself.

“I think I’ll drink this up and then turn in. I’m duty brig officer tomorrow morning… I tell you it’s all glitz and glamour in security!”

He sat down and sipped at his glass.

  • Ensign Striker

“Even the mundane activities are useful though. And much needed. People often underestimate just how important the everyday little routine tasks truly are. In any department. Besides, when things are exciting for you, that usually means there’s something wrong, right?” The Zaharan lifted the cup to her lips and went to take a sip but it was a tad too hot just yet. “In my view, a boring security shift is a good thing for the rest of us, even if you might not agree in the moment,” she added with a grin.

~Ensign Ka’Sora

Striker grinned.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’d take duty brig officer over a Borg invasion anyday. But… to be perfectly honest I hope I get to tag along with you boffin Science guys on an exploration mission, It’d be so neat to watch you discover… erm… well… Something.”

Striker inwardly winced… he could hear his old class mates voice in his head.

She tilted her head as she gazed at him, confused a little by his own reaction.

(“Discover something? Whoah did you hear Striker? This is why he’s the muscle.. the only time Johnny uses a tricorder is to bash somebody’s brains out with it!”)

Striker shook his head.

“I’m sorry Ka’Sora, that sounded dumb. What I mean is I was so excited to be posted to a starship.. the reality of it being not that much different to a Starbase or outpost hadn’t really occurred to be “

He sipped his root beer as he pushed his annoying friends out of his memory.

  • Ensign Striker

Still gazing at him, the Zaharan shook her head. “It did not sound… dumb, as you say. We are in a situation where everyday we have the possibility of finding out something new, or meeting new species. That’s pretty exciting! Science discoveries are not as common as you might think. Oh, we hops for them, of course, but depending on your field, making a major breakthrough or discovery is rare. For most if goes the way my own research is going- slow and steady gathering of data that I hope some year in the future will amount to my being able to make some definitely conclusions. But it’s just as likely that I will end up concluding that it’s all too complicated to define and summarize.” She shrugged one shoulder and flashed a grin. “It’s the process that important, at least in my opinion, So if you enjoy being a part of that, I’m glad you have you along fpr the journey.”

~Ensign Ka’Sora

They chatted for a little while longer until the ensign had to leave. Ka’Sora had been glad for the interaction and it left her smiling. Meanwhile, she pulled her PADD back out and continued writing.
