USS Kepler
Captain - Sebastian d’Aramis (Orville Fleet)
XO/Security Chief - Thelos sh’Reni; Female Andorian
Medical Chief - Ka’Sora
Science/Library - Shedda Mal’athar
Engineering - Taylor Weyer; Nonbinary Human
Pilot/Weapons Control - Kylie McLaren, Female Human [NPC]
Navigator/Astrogation - Satok; Male Vulcan
Communications - T’Sai; Female VulcanMcLaren nodded. “Yessir,” she replied, and the ship slipped out of warp travel, the stars coming to a restful stop in the viewscreen. The space up ahead seemed normal at first, but there was an odd distortion to the stars in the area described as ‘crumpled’ space. The light of the stars seemed to bend, similar to the way light bends and relfects around a black hole.
The comms panel blinked again, reminding Bjarke that he is the communications officer.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanBjarke looked over at her, “Oh right sorry I forgot” he said his face turned and interesting shade of pink, before he tried to adjust again in his seat. “All this is a bit different than my normal.. errr Sorry I should stay in character” he paused started to say something and then looked down at hte console in frustration.
Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéStanding at the science console beside him, Shedda tossed him a gentle reassuring smile. “Play the comm,” she whispered.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Bjarke smiled, “which button is it” he asked, pointing to the one he thought it was. This technology was all strange to him.Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéShedda stepped over and picked up the earpiece. “Hold it to your ear and then press that button,” she said pointing to the one he indicated. “The message will play in the ear piece and you will have to relay the message to the captain.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Sebastian grinned at Bjarke’s uncomfortableness at the comms station. “Do the best you can, Viktorsson. It’s all for fun and a history lesson.”
It took a moment, but the message began to play. It was in an unfamilar language, but the distress in the speaker’s voice was clear. The universal translator started to pick up on the message as it repeated… relaying a familiar voice. (Kaia)
“Mayday, mayday. We are beached. Explosion in the rear section, warp is disabled, impulse is damaged. Life support is still functioning, but I’m not sure how much longer it will be. If there’s anyone out there, please help.”
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanKa’Sora’s ears twitched. “Is the distress signal coming from within the crumpled space area or outside of it?” They had five minutes before they arrived and already she was thinking of the multitudes of injury types that might happen in such a situation.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
“Bjarke, open a channel,” d’Aramis ordered.
=^=This is Capt. Sebastian d’Aramis (don’t remember what the captains name was), of the USS Kepler from the United Federation of Planets. We are here to offer you assistance. Please give us your location so we can aid you.”
As he waited for a response, Sebastian assumed this was a legitimate call for help. Kaia’s people had become Federation members after this initial meeting, so he doubted this was a test like the Kobayashi Maru.
He spun the chair to glance at communications. . . . .
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanBjarke stood suddenly, “I’m not feeling well, please excuse me.” and then he left the holodeck, he made his way to his quarters and laid down in his bed.
Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéSebastian raised a questioning eyebrow and looked from comm station to Bjarke’s exit. As the doors closed behind the large Norwegian, he said quietly, “Dismissed?”
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanWith Viktorson’s departure, a vulcan woman stepped out of the turbolift and settled wordlessly into the comms station. “I am receiving a response from the unidentified vessel. Putting it on the viewscreen.”
At the front of the bridge, a badly-transmitted view of a dark room - presumably the bridge of the alien ship - was displayed. The picture was staticky, and there were red lights glowing in the background.
The only figure displayed on the bridge was Kaia, but dressed in a strange uniform, and apparently bleeding quite heavly from above one eye.
=^=Thank Enrys! I have never heard of the United Federation of Planets, but I am Captain Wynn of the IAS Da’ryn, from the Interstellar Alliance. We are transmitting coordinates. Please help us.=^=
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanShedda bent over the sensor viewer, scanning for the ship and the location of the signal. Hoping to pick up any information about the condition of the ship and the space it was in.
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
As promised, the coordinates were transmitted, displaying the Da’ryn to be within or slightly past the ‘crumpled’ region of spacetime.
Shedda’s sensor displayed a visual of the crumpled space, displaying it on a small map of the local region - the strange distortion of spacetime stretched upwards and outwards in all directions ahead of them, almost like a net, surrounding the region ahead of the ship. The computer’s projected radius of the effect, assuming its curvature was uniform, was roughly two dozen lightyears.
To get to the Da’ryn and save them, they would have to pass through the strange effect.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS Manhattan“Captain,” Shedda spoke as she watched the scans, “The signal is coming from the far edge of the crumpled space. I can’t tell from here if they are in the space or outside of it. The crumpled space is like a net, it’s two dozen lightyears in radius. Taking into account the urgency of their call, we will have to go through the effect. I am trying to get a reading on the status of their ship,” Shedda added as she leaned into the viewer again, adjusting the scanners to try and get a sensor reading on the status of the ship.
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Once the location of the ship was known, it wasn’t too difficult to get a read on it. The readings were distorted, the space-time anomaly seemingly interfering with the sensors - they were detecting a large life-form, nearly the same size as the Kepler - which seemed to be injured. Sensors did register a large plasma leak and an amount of atmosphere leakage that couldn’t be a good sign.
Sebastian set his jaw and then began issuing orders. “Keep trying, Shedda. We need whatever info we can get by the time we get there.”
“I’m detecting a large life-form. Close in size to the Kepler. It seems to be injured in some manner. I’m also detecting plasma and atmosphere leakage. The anomaly is interfering too much to get more specific readings at this range, Sir,” Shedda spoke, trying to refine the sensors.
“Satok, plot a course through that mess. I got faith that you can pull it off.”
“Ka’sora, get sickbay ready for injuries.”
“Yes, Captain,” Ka’Sora said. What exactly she was going to do, she wasn’t sure, but she was just going with this given she had no direct medical experience other than the standard first aid they did at the Academy.
“Mr. Weyer, get an engineering team ready to transport over. Standby in the transporter room until the word is given.”
“T’sai, keep the channel open so they can share the situation with us. Let them know we’re on our way.”
“X, coordinate transportation between getting injured over here and the engineering team over there. Be ready to beam them back at a moments notice.”
“Helm, full ahead.”
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanThe Zaharan stepped off the bridge and headed for Sickbay.
OOC: Riley, do you want me to start a separate thread?
~Ensign Ka’Sora
[[If you want a different post you can, I put you in medical at random cause you made me choose]]
The NE’s all followed orders as d’Aramis gave them, and there was a slight lurch as the ship began accelerating, those old starship inertial dampeners not being as efficient as modern ones. They dropped out of warp only a couple minutes later. “We are 1000 kilometers away from the surface of the anomaly.” Satok reported.
This close to the crumpled spacetime, Shedda’s scanners are able to pick up that the crumpled spacetime doesn’t extend the entire depth of its range, and instead is like a shell around the two-dozen lightyears radius. The shell is roughly 200 billion kilometers thick - only a little more than an Astronomical Unit, and the Da’ryn is about a quarter of that distance into the other side of the area.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanOOC: I hate to ask this, but could you reword this? I’m having trouble visualizing what exactly it is that you are describing.
But for the sake of the thread I’m going to just copy what you put for her to report so others don’t have to wait for my misfiring brain. lolIC: “The crumpled spacetime doesn’t extend the entire depth of its range, and instead is like a shell around the two-dozen lightyears radius. The shell is roughly 200 billion kilometers thick - only a little more than an Astronomical Unit, and the Da’ryn is about a quarter of that distance into the other side of the area,” she reported as they got closer.
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
OOC; Sorry! Trying to word things differently, there’s an anomaly in spacetime that seems to act like a shell, surrounding a span of the galaxy, with a “two-dozen lightyears radius”. The effected space where warp is negatively effected (the crumple) is only about 200 billion kilometers thick though, and within the ‘egg’ spacetime seems to behave normally. The distressed ship seems to have made it 50 billion kilometers into the anomalous region (about a quarter of the way) before malfunctioning - making it 150 billion kilometers away from the Kepler. Did that make more sense hopefully?
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanThank you
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Thelos glanced towards Ka’Sora, then turned to d’Aramis. “Captain, I believe it may be advisable to send medical personnel to the Da’ryn, to properly triage the injured where they are. We saw for ourselves the injury on their captain.”
