With everyone arrived and ‘assigned’ to their posts, the lights dimmed for a few moments. Over the darkness, a male voice began to speak.
“Captain’s Log, Stardate 1155.26.121. Our mission; explore the unexplored. Things have been going well for the past few months, we haven’t bumped into anything worth recording since my last log, but Thelos insists I make regular reports regardless. We’re approaching an area of space that our navigator has described as ‘fascinating,’ so I’ve got big hopes.”
The bridge brightened up again. The various console lights blinked in bright colours, the general ambient sounds of beeping filled the room. Sebastian sat in the center seat, while in front of him were two holographic people - a human woman in the pilot’s seat, and a vulcan man at the navigator’s console.
Arrayed across the back and side walls were an Andorian woman at the security console, Mal’athar at the science console, a human at the engineering console, and Bjarke at the communications console. Ka’Sora, without a dedicated console, stood behind Sebastian’s chair.
“Captain, we will arrive at the border of the region of abnormal space in approximately 1 hour, 12.315 minutes,” the navigator spoke up.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS Manhattan“Thank you, Mr. Satok., Sebastian replied.
Standing up, he turned and gave Ka’Sora quick smile and a wink.
Ka’Sora simply gave him a nod, not entirely sure what a medical chief would do on the bridge.
“Science, anything to report yet?”
“Not yet Captain. Sensors are coming online now,” Shedda reported, eyes glued to the small viewer.
He slid over to the science station and spoke low so only Shedda could hear him. ” I know you don’t like me, Commander, but if you’re going to have a problem taking orders from me, I’ll excuse myself from this little adventure. i don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanShe stood straight and turned to look at him. This was neither the time nor the place to discuss his behavior. “I neither like nor dislike you, Cmdr. I don’t know you,” she said honestly. “First impressions are important, but I’ve always lead with the philosophy that people deserve a chance at a second impression. We’re here, off duty, to have fun. Let’s do that. Having the center chair is exciting, even on a holodeck. Enjoy it.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
“That’s what I’m here for, as well. I just didn’t want to make it uncomfortable for you,” Sebastian replied. A moment later he slipped back to the center seat.
Ka’Sora gazed at the viewscreen, soaking in the depths of space. She wasn’t sure what would be classified as abnormal space, but a shiver of excitement swept over her.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
Gazing out the viewscreen, there wasn’t much to see, as the Kepler was at Warp.
The region of abnormal space was coming into range of the mid-range scanners, and Ensign Satok was right - it was weird. The holo-program simplified the science, but the warp of space-time seemed to be crumpled. According to the science display, warp bubbles within the region may be unstable.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanSebastians brow furrowed in confusion as he looked at the screen. “Someone report. Tell me what we’re looking at here?”
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanStaring through the sensor viewer, Shedda found what she was looking at fascinating. “Space time seems to have crumpled within the area. The natural warp has collapsed. Our warp bubble will become unstable within the area, Captain.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
“What does ‘crumpled’ mean?” Ka’Sora asked.
“Like a shirt balled up and tossed in a laundry basket,” Shedda explained trying to give a visual to something that was more sensor based than actually visable.
“Or a piece of paper, all wadded up. Something applied pressure and compacted everything into a smaller space,” Sebastian added.
After a couple of minutes (for any other conversations you’d like to have), the lights dimmed briefly, then brightened again. “We are currently five minutes away from the ‘crumpled’ space at our current speed,” Satok informed the bridge crew.
The communications panel began to light up, and upon examining it, Bjarke would see that they were picking up an unfamiliar distress signal.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanHer tall ears perked up at the alert. She was keeping herself in check but she was excited! Yes it was the holodeck, but she found it didn’t much matter. Her excitement was genuinely inspired.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
“Captian, shall I adjust speed and course?” he asked, he was not much of a scientist or an engineer but a collapsed warp bubble did not sound good to him. He shifted in his seat, were these things made for small people he thought. His large frame was not comfortable at the station his legs turned sideways as they would not fit comfortably under the consol
Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic Attaché“That’s my job, dude!” the NPC pilot glared playfully at Bjarke.
“Hold position here, Mr. McLaren.”
McLaren nodded. “Yessir,” she replied, and the ship slipped out of warp travel, the stars coming to a restful stop in the viewscreen. The space up ahead seemed normal at first, but there was an odd distortion to the stars in the area described as ‘crumpled’ space. The light of the stars seemed to bend, similar to the way light bends and relfects around a black hole.
The comms panel blinked again, reminding Bjarke that he is the communications officer.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanBjarke looked over at her, “Oh right sorry I forgot” he said his face turned and interesting shade of pink, before he tried to adjust again in his seat. “All this is a bit different than my normal.. errr Sorry I should stay in character” he paused started to say something and then looked down at hte console in frustration.
Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéStanding at the science console beside him, Shedda tossed him a gentle reassuring smile. “Play the comm,” she whispered.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Bjarke smiled, “which button is it” he asked, pointing to the one he thought it was. This technology was all strange to him.Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéShedda stepped over and picked up the earpiece. “Hold it to your ear and then press that button,” she said pointing to the one he indicated. “The message will play in the ear piece and you will have to relay the message to the captain.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Sebastian grinned at Bjarke’s uncomfortableness at the comms station. “Do the best you can, Viktorsson. It’s all for fun and a history lesson.”
It took a moment, but the message began to play. It was in an unfamilar language, but the distress in the speaker’s voice was clear. The universal translator started to pick up on the message as it repeated… relaying a familiar voice. (Kaia)
“Mayday, mayday. We are beached. Explosion in the rear section, warp is disabled, impulse is damaged. Life support is still functioning, but I’m not sure how much longer it will be. If there’s anyone out there, please help.”
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanKa’Sora’s ears twitched. “Is the distress signal coming from within the crumpled space area or outside of it?” They had five minutes before they arrived and already she was thinking of the multitudes of injury types that might happen in such a situation.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
“Bjarke, open a channel,” d’Aramis ordered.
=^=This is Capt. Sebastian d’Aramis (don’t remember what the captains name was), of the USS Kepler from the United Federation of Planets. We are here to offer you assistance. Please give us your location so we can aid you.”
As he waited for a response, Sebastian assumed this was a legitimate call for help. Kaia’s people had become Federation members after this initial meeting, so he doubted this was a test like the Kobayashi Maru.
He spun the chair to glance at communications. . . . .
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS ManhattanBjarke stood suddenly, “I’m not feeling well, please excuse me.” and then he left the holodeck, he made his way to his quarters and laid down in his bed.
Lieutenant Bjarke Viktorsson
Diplomatic AttachéSebastian raised a questioning eyebrow and looked from comm station to Bjarke’s exit. As the doors closed behind the large Norwegian, he said quietly, “Dismissed?”
Lt. Cmdr. Sebastian d’Aramis
CIO-USS Manhattan
With Viktorson’s departure, a vulcan woman stepped out of the turbolift and settled wordlessly into the comms station. “I am receiving a response from the unidentified vessel. Putting it on the viewscreen.”
At the front of the bridge, a badly-transmitted view of a dark room - presumably the bridge of the alien ship - was displayed. The picture was staticky, and there were red lights glowing in the background.
The only figure displayed on the bridge was Kaia, but dressed in a strange uniform, and apparently bleeding quite heavly from above one eye.
=^=Thank Enrys! I have never heard of the United Federation of Planets, but I am Captain Wynn of the IAS Da’ryn, from the Interstellar Alliance. We are transmitting coordinates. Please help us.=^=
