Anna took a breath, started to answer, and then … stopped. She looked at the Commander as they advanced along the passageway. “I guess I, uh … used to?”

Not much time for hobbies when you’re a single mother chasing a two-year-old around.

“I was a rower in high school, and all through the Academy. Then after graduation, throughout my residency, I used to go rowing solo in the early mornings. There’s this rowing club in the San Francisco Bay that’s been there, in continuous operation, since the late 1800’s. I wrote a program to emulate it on the Holodeck when I was on the McCoy. I should perhaps check to see if it’s still in my personal storage. No time like the present to rekindle good habits.”

“Well we certainly have the facilities and computer memory for it. We might even get lucky, eventually, to meet a culture that will have similar facilities you could make use of.” Mal’athar stopped by a door. “These are your quarters, Ensign. If you need anything, let Ops know. They will make sure you get it. When you have time, I recommend the officer’s mess. The chef Caotain Cochrane managed to convince to come on board is excellent.”

Anna smiled. “Thanks for the tips and for the escort, Commander. Until we meet again.” She tipped her forehead with two fingers, in a cross between taking off an imaginary hat, and a salute. It wasn’t a mock salute so much as a friendly gesture of respect.

With that, she turned, entered her assigned quarters, and dropped the duffel to the floor as she stood, measuring the distance to the opposite bulkhead with her eyes. Would a baby grand piano fit in here? She wondered. The Commander had her thinking about taking up old hobbies.
