Anna smiled. The Commander certainly had a way of cutting through the pleasantries and getting straight to the meat very quickly.

“The fact that it’s literally the other side of the universe, away from everything familiar, was part of the draw for me, Commander,” Anna said as she walked with the other woman to the lift. “I thought I was going to be spending the next two decades of my life doing one thing, but as it turns out, it’s going to have to be something entirely different. I’m looking to make a clean break with the life I thought I was going to have. This seemed like the perfect place to do it.”

“It is.” The XO agreed. “This is a good place to start down new paths. You really get the chance to discover yourself and the universe out here.” They stepped off the lift. “We are, of course, a science vessel, but are Medical facility is top of the line. I won’t spoil that introduction for Dr. Hudson.” She made a turn down a side corridor. “Do you have any hobbies ensign?”

Anna took a breath, started to answer, and then … stopped. She looked at the Commander as they advanced along the passageway. “I guess I, uh … used to?”

Not much time for hobbies when you’re a single mother chasing a two-year-old around.

“I was a rower in high school, and all through the Academy. Then after graduation, throughout my residency, I used to go rowing solo in the early mornings. There’s this rowing club in the San Francisco Bay that’s been there, in continuous operation, since the late 1800’s. I wrote a program to emulate it on the Holodeck when I was on the McCoy. I should perhaps check to see if it’s still in my personal storage. No time like the present to rekindle good habits.”

“Well we certainly have the facilities and computer memory for it. We might even get lucky, eventually, to meet a culture that will have similar facilities you could make use of.” Mal’athar stopped by a door. “These are your quarters, Ensign. If you need anything, let Ops know. They will make sure you get it. When you have time, I recommend the officer’s mess. The chef Caotain Cochrane managed to convince to come on board is excellent.”
