“So drink it. I didn’t ask for a counseling session.” Her eyes narrowed dangerously. “Oh? Why wouldn’t he understand? He’s Betazoid, he knows how it works, he lost his telepathy and regained it. And last I checked, which was a few hours ago, no one has been through exactly what I have. So who exactly is going to understand? Who exactly is going to ‘train’ me that a very skilled and very strong Betazoid telepath can’t?” She moved and leaned against her desk with a hip. “And to put more a point on it, there isn’t another telepathy I even remotely trust.” She crossed her arms, but it wasn’t a protective gesture, “Yeah I’m wallowing, and maybe it is beneath the image you have of me. I’m allowed to process however I want and however I need. Now that the mission is over, I have the time and the chance to do so. It’s not my problem it doesn’t look how you think it should.” She tilted her head back and looked up at the ceiling a moment and then back. “Look, I know you want to help. I know you care. It means a lot. It does, but I’m not good company right now.”

Shara, despite her role, was not a covert agent anymore gathering every bit of information on the ship. Things did, and should slip by her knowledge when it came to people’s personal lives. It was the only way she could be here on the Asimov and even hope to have a chance a new start in the light. She had to leave the shadows behind. That didn’t mean that it was jarring to have missed something critical about someone. Izei had his abilities back? Since when? Then again, they knew nothing about each other other than what Shara had shared in that very brief consultation.

“Too bad,” Shara said, though her tone was softer and her expression pensive. “We’ve had to trust each other a lot since that mission was dumped on us. Do you still trust me, even with your life?”

A lot had happened that people weren’t aware of. Other than a very few select people in medical, no one even knew she had been sick. No one even knew why she had the internal bleeding. No one had bothered to ask either. It was alright, everyone had their own priorities and demons.

A small quirk tugged the corner of her mouth, “I wouldn’t be consuming with you around if I didn’t.” Bethany had no doubt Shara would do what she could to save people, nor did she doubt she would sacrifice one to save many. It was the job. It wasn’t a matter of trusting her life to someone, it was trusting them to make the best decision they could in a situation.

She reached out a hand and gestured to the door. “Then let’s go. You trust me and you trust Dr. Izei. You’re suffering and you don’t have to. Mental shields take time to build, and in the meantime drinking yourself to death, whether you feel it or not, is not the answer. And yes, I will try to throw you over my shoulder and carry you out if I have to.” Shara did say try, not that she’d be successful. But Bethy would know that Shara’s care for her in this moment meant she wasn’t taking no for an answer.

Bethany wasn’t budging. “I don’t feel like going out. Take the booze, I don’t really want it anyway. The alcohol won’t kill me.” Not while his blood was flowing through her veins. She didn’t want to go out, she didn’t want to be around people. She’d earned the right to keep to herself for a few hours at least. “Where?”

Well Shara wasn’t leaving her liquor here, that was for certain. “To go see Dr. Izei. Or we invite him here. Your choice. I can always suggest he bring a neurosuppressant here.” She blew out a breath. “Maybe booze won’t kill you, but what you want it won’t give you. But we can give your mind a break for a little while at least.” There were times when you sunk to a place that it seemed impossible to rise up from. Shara had been there, more than once, and sometimes she was amazed she had somehow survived it. When she had it was because someone had been there to make sure she had. This was why she could stand here and be just as stubborn as Bethany was being.

Bethany’s brows went up. “You want to see Dr. Izei.” She shrugged in a very indifferent way, but seemed slightly amused. “Alright, follow me.” She left her quarters and did not go down the corridor of deck 4 toward sickbay, instead she walked toward the turbolift. “Deck 6.” Then she led the way to the docking hatch and stepped through. She continued walking.

See, if he hadn’t been on board, Shara would have gone about this differently. But she had also had some drinks already and while Bethy might not be affected, Shara was. “If he wasn’t on the ship, why didn’t you just say so?”
