Mwezi sat at the table in his new quarters aboard the new ship, eating his midday meal in solitude. It was a beautiful ship, far more impressive than the previous model, although the ‘pirate’ skin placed over everything reduced that magnificence slightly, at least in the visual department. Luckily, like the Captain, he wasn’t serving under a false identity, so he could still display his framed photos of himself and his partners on the walls. As he finished his meal, a light alarm went off from his wrist and he turned to glance at the small holographic screen that popped up.

–Meeting with Captain; 1500h–

“Ah, I didn’t realise it was so close to that time. Better get going.” Mwezi put away his dishes and left his quarters, making his way at a reasonable pace towards the Captain’s office, arriving at precisely 1455 and pressing the chime.

Mwezi, XO

Sara had a few minutes to relax and not think about anything. Or so she thought. The chime went, and she sighed deeply. She straightened herself up a little and called out “Come in.” She wasn’t expecting anyone until Mwezi was due in about five minutes.

Mwezi walked into Sara’s office and placed a hot mug of Apple Cider on the desk in front of her, a second, slightly larger mug of the same beverage in his other hand. “Afternoon, Captain. Sorry if I’m a little early. I brought something to compensate.” He smiled slightly, then sat across from Sara and placed his mug down on a coaster. “Let’s just enjoy these for a few minutes more before we start our meeting, eh?”

Mwezi would be lying if he said he hadn’t done a little research about how humans formed bonds. Remembering his first Captain’s love of coffee had given him this idea, and it had only took some light questioning of the cooks in the lounge to find out what Sara’s favourite was.

Mwezi, XO

“Gunning for a medal, eh?” Sara said with a coy smile. As the mug slid in front of her, she smelled the apple and the spices and let that sit for a moment. “Thank you. Out of curiosity, who told on me? Everyone in the senior staff thinks I’m a coffee drinker… as far as I know.” She relaxed in her chair and took a sip. “Perfect.”

-CO

“It wasn’t anyone in the senior staff. Kiell, one of the bartenders.” Mwezi replied, taking a sip of his own mug, although not before taking a deep breath and experiencing the smell of the thing. He tilted his head, letting the cider sit in his mouth for a moment before swallowing. “An interesting taste. Odd that I’ve managed to live among humans for seven years and haven’t tried all your beverages yet. I will have to recommend it it to Shilo once we are allowed to contact… anyone outside this ship. They’re quite fond of fragrant foods and drinks.”

Mwezi, XO

“I’ll have to lock Kiell in the brig.” Sara joked. “The variety of food and drink you’ll find all around the earth- I doubt I’ve had everything. It’s a challenge worth trying though. Shilo… that name sounds vaguely familiar from your personnel file.”

“One of my partners,” Mwezi said, smiling tiredly. He had a sad, wistful expression on his face as he stared into the middle distance. “The other is Kula. Kula and I grew up together. We met Shilo in the Academy, hit it off pretty much immediately. Kula is such a brilliant scientist, and I’ve never seen someone pilot a shuttle as gracefully as Shilo. They’re absolutely incredible and I thank the gods every day that when I fell through the rift into your universe, they came through with me.”

“That’s right. I think when I was reading your background ‘fell through a rift in the universe’ took precedence in my mind over family history. Obviously this last mission was a less than opportune moment to do so, but your family is welcome on the Asimov.” One thought connected to another. Back in uniform, she didn’t have her leather jacket where she had kept certain things she had been given. “Which reminds me-“ She reached into a desk drawer and pulled out a small velvet box. “you asked me to look after these. But it seems that now we’re back in safe territory, you should have them back.”

Mwezi’s eyes widened in surprise at the sight. “My…” tears welled up in his eyes as he reached out to take the small box. “Thank you, Captain. Our engagement loops…” He took the box in his hands almost reverently and carefully opened it up. Inside were two silver earrings, simple loops. “Thank you for holding onto these. I… I am glad to be able to serve the Galaxy in a manner that my Promised can be proud of once again.” He carefully re-attached the two silvered earrings on their places of honour on his right ear, then tapped the three black rings on his left ear. “I should replace these as well. I believe my proper rank earrings are in my quarters… somewhere…” He was contemplative for a few moments before giving Sara a serious look.

“Earrings are a… special thing for my people. Both in our private lives,” he touched his engagement loops, “As well as our professional lives,” he tapped the three black rings on his left ear again. “These, or rather the rings that I wore before I replaced them for the sake of the mission, are… similar to rank pips. Since Starfleet approved my field promotion when we returned, I am officially a Commander… I can get my fourth loop. Getting our ears pierced for a promotion is a special occasion. A ritual of sorts. I wonder if you’d do me the honour of attending and, well, adding the fourth loop? As soon as we get near enough for Shilo and Kula to visit, they will bring one from Galdor for me.”
