[snip]Simon looked over everything and asked “Could we tell from the recordings when it was placed, and if they were… clumsy enough to get caught by the own camera,” Simon asked Ranlei. “Think we could hack into this thing, Ensign?” he asked looking towards Ranlei as he did so with a look of concern. “And of course we didn’t forget. Both of you have had some interesting experiences recently, but at this time, I have no evidence to suggest the two events are linked,” he said.
Lieutenant (J.G) Simon Starr, CoS
Ranlei handed the padd with the data from the device to Lt. Starr. “IF they did ought to be in there Sir. Might be encryption but ought to be able to get aroubd that given time. In fact the encryption might tell you more about who did it than the device or actual recordings will. Encryptions are very specific the the agency or programmer who placed them.”

After looking for and disabling any transmitter, any secondary transmitter, sound or visual and holographic recorders. Ranlei dug deeper into the device.
Ranlei stopped her digging and hrmphed, “Someone went out of their way to use generic technologies used by pretty much everyone. I’ll go through it chip by chip, before I’m done but it’s seeming to be generic and likely not going to learn anything new based of what it’s made of sirs. We can only hope the software tells us a bit more. “, and she bypassed the usual plug ins under the theory they ought to be setup so that once mission instructions were uploaded any attempt to access would cause it to wipe it’s memory. “Have you irritated any elementary school students Doctor? I build something like this as a project at age 6 to hover over my shoulder while I did mock news reports. I had aspirations of being a news reporter. Of course that lasted all of a afternoon till it was destroyed by a foster sister.”, she still took precautions as she copied everything from the device into a pad. And handed it to Lt Starr. She checked for secondary power backups before disabling power completely. ” Computers, programing and repair were my academy focus. So if you like I can dissect the program as well. I doubt anyone purposely tried to frame me. For one thing that would require knowing I have Intelligence training which is so far known only to Starfleet Intelligence. And those of you in this room who I told because you needed to know. I kind of embarrassed people in Intelligence by telling them just what My opinion of their typical mission profile for me was.So as you can Imagine I am here to get me as far from Federation Intelligence interests as possible.”, and she twirled the lock of hair that usually fell out of place round her finger then swirled it and tucked it behind her ear where it

“Trust me, as the Chief of Security, the intelligence department can seem to get in the way sometimes,” Simon chuckled as he eyed the device and looked over the PaDD. Unfortunately there were no tell-tale signs that he recognised from the technology that it was made from, and being so basic didn’t narrow down who could be responsible. “I hope your right about the software, right now all we have is dead ends, though I have suspicions - see if you can find anything from Betazed as well,” Simon mentioned.

Trax stood there in the doorway as he checked their progress. “Is there anything interesting?” Trax asked them from a distance.
He truly wanted to keep away from the thing just in case. As he stood there waiting for a reply.Lt Jg Doctor Trax Suder - CMO
Software checks found it looked quite amateurly programmed....at first. A second look found an underlying secondary code hiding among the sloppy code. In this case the coding bore the marks often used by Ferengi and Orion Pirate mercenary groups. It wasn’t anything malicious per say but it did give a clue on who likely had worked it, but the oddity in this was the secondary code while hidden had not gone as deeply as someone might expect if they wanted to stay anonymous. Perhaps it was left as a sort of message for Trax to worry over by whoever had commissioned this device to be made?
Given what the Junior Lieutenant had said about his mother on Betazed being wanting control of his life and willing to go to great lengths to have it perhaps this was a forewarning of greater things to come. For now though nothing else could be gleaned from the device for clues. They might try following up with a direct call to the Lieutenants’ mother, or perhaps at the least alert the Captain of their findings and/or put Starfleet Security on alert for what had been implied though not fully pointing who had done it.

Ranlei dug into the code on her copy that she had put on a second padd and after about ten minutes she said basic functions are pretty sloppy but functional but the run time doesn’t match what this code is doing. Which means theres another set of instructions running at the same time. Ah she said after a few minutes More “Well interestinug. The real operating system was hidden under the first batch. Fairly professional except it was far to easy to find. Given the style of it I would say either Ferrengi or Syndicate. My latnum would be on the Ferrengi. They are less expensive to hire and easier to contact than the syndicate. ” , she turned to look at the doctor. “Given that this device was easy to find, easy to disable. The code was easy to discover and points a finger directly at criminel involvement Doctor. This is almost certainly a message. Sent to warn you to do as your instructed or things get serious.” And looking to Lt. Starr she said, “My opinion sir but if you have a better or different theory it is of course your investigation. I can dig deeoer if you like but I doubt theres a lot more it’s going to tell us.”, she cocked her head to the side a moment then took out a tricorder. Set it up for medical functions the scanned the device for any DNA not her own, Lt. Starrs the Doctors or his companions. “Sloppy of me should of done this before I even touched it. The maker, the programmer each one would of needed to handle this thing at some point. We might find someones fingerprints or a few skin cells or a hair. As I noted before I am a engineer not security or medical. I Told them when they assigned me to a extra year of spook training I only really cared about building or tearing apart things. Forensic investigation is not my cup of tea and to be honest they only wanted me to ingratiate myself into peoples confidence using time honored Orion methods that I wasn’t interested in using. I get that I have incredibly strong female drives as it were but that doesn’t mean I am not choosy about who I date. I think they got the point when, Never mind I really shouldn’t be as open about this as I have been.” And she handed the tricorder to Lt. Starr. “I can do the scans as well as anyone in Star Fleet but the Doctor should likely interpret it.” She said, “Unless you need me further sirs I am going to get back to my regular duties”, she said.

Scans for DNA came up in the negative as well as fingerprints and the like. It seems whoever had done this at least had taken the proper time to avoid getting caught in such an amaetur way.

“Hmm, how about the code? Any signatures within the code - sometimes programmers like to put little signatures in there, everybody codes a bit differently, but you said it could be Ferengi or Syndicate. That’s a start. Both of them could be possible,” Simon said out loud before turning to Trax. “I have a feeling this may have something to do with what you were talking about earlier, Doctor. I think once we’ve checked the code we won’t be getting anything else out of this device. I’ll arrange for it to be destroyed,” Simon also said reassuringly. “At this point, I’d like to bring the captain into this, unless either of you have any objections?” he asked both Trax and Ranlei.
Lieutenant (J.G) Simon Starr, CoS
“No, by all means, please update the captain on this situation. I believe she would like to know.” Trax commented. “I need to go now.” as he and the others of Trax’s party left too back down the corridor back to the doctor’s quarters.
Lt Jg Trax Suder - Cmo
“A programmers tag Lt. Starr is usually used as A I did this for other programmers to see and admire. As such if I was writing a sloppy code on purpose as this seems to be If I tagged it at all I would use a competitors tag not my own. Cause this is just embarrassingly easy to crack. But what is in there are some operations that are used in varient forms in almost every program created. This methodology is what implies it’s Either syndicate or Ferrengi as it uses several variable methods in the same subroutines. Which both the syndicae and Ferrengi tend to do on purpose to cast blame on others, and because being in contact with every known species, Empire and trade conglomerate they scavenge code till they find which works best. But by doing so they can end up with failed subroutines so they tend to place redubdant functions. In short they suffer bloat. And use to much memory for no good reason.” Ranlei said matter of factly. And she sighed, “I think I insulted the Doctor and his friends when I first met them. But we need a better protocal then it’s a machine take it to engineering. Something like contain it on sight. Report it. Then wait for the experts to show up.”, she said as she headed for the door pausing long enough to hear any reply.
