Her parents being traders were visiting the station. Ranlei suffered a minor birth defect
And was kept overnight for observation. Starfleet Security discovered Ranlei’s father was smuggling
Anid the Orion freighter, with Ranlei’s family onboard fled arrest .

No attempt was made to claim the baby. So Ranlei was transfered to a Federation Facility on the planet.
But finding people to adopt a Green Orion proved impossible. The Federation prides itself on it’s fairness and tolorance
But some biases continue to exist. Ranlei bounced from foster home to foster home usually not staying in one home longer
than it took to find another. Like all children treated wrongly she became sullen resentful and stubborn. If she was going to be
accused of wrong she figured. She might as well be guilty. Petty pasive aggressive lashing out. Became more serious when puberty
also brought on the pheremones her species were famous for. Expectations on how she would misbehave changed overnight and
She again lived down to the expectations.
Fourteen Arrested embarrassed and naked she was dragged into Colonial security and tossed in a cell with the middle aged John she was with
since the facility only had the one cell. They finally found her some clothing. She was no longer welcome in the latest foster home.
And had a reputation for being trouble so new placements were impossible. Brought before a magistrate she suggested a military
academy. Her grades were actually above average as dispite being the bad girl she had always enjoyed learning. She had little to lose as she had
burned through the boys in her area and was hated by the girls.
The Academy wasn’t easy. Her attempts to manipulate her teachers failed repeatedly. Her attempts to manipulate her fellow students had more success
But she was treated the same as any other cadet. After two years she was like any other Cadet. She earned respect by working with the program. She broke
the boys hearts no more or less than any of the other girls though her morals tended to be more lax and she would bend the rules while never visibly breaking
them. She took electives that gave her the option to fall back into being a bad Orion if every xhe needed to, but worked to overcome the expectations of others.
She did the Starfleet application, exams , medical and psycological screening with no expectation of success. She had a criminal record.
She was Orion even if she was a so called tamed Federation Orion. When she was accepted she was cynical about it. Starfleet must be desperate, she told her latest boyfriend to fill some Alien membership quota perhaps. She hooked him up with a girl she respected before she left
Sixteen years old a first year cadet in the Academy on Earth. She always dressed in civilian clothing when she left to visit San Francisco. She was proud of being in Starfleet but didn’t want civilians to associate her with Starfleet.She felt that a dirty Orion whore in uniform would tarnish Starfleet somehow. This earned her a be who you are not who you were speach. She asked for help from one of her teachers to suppress her pheremones in her second year. They came up with a skin lotion with synthahol like properties so she could use her pheremones if she needed them. She tried wearing her uniform in public but was to uncomfortable to keep doing so.
Her last two years at the academy she spent with the same boyfriend, it was the longest she had ever been with a single man. It ended abruptly when he introduced her to his parents. Every negative ever used to discribe a Orion was thrown at her. Hey boyfriends brother offered her money for sex. She fled back to the academy in tears and had the marriage contract they had gone to tell his parents about annulled. She barily scraped by till graduation. She was honest to the point of being blunt when asked. Friends avoided her. Less friendly people made up reasons it was her fault. Her criminal past became public. And she changed into her civilian clothing and went to town and for almost a week she was the bad Orion everyone assumed she always had been. She ran into a woman who it turned out was her XO for the Cadet cruise she had failed to report for. It started as a lecture. It ended with them both crying. Ranlei went to the ship. Checked herself into the brig to detox. And went on duty two days later. Her evaluations having been done while she was in the brig. She wasn’t a model cadet. But she did her job. She even managed to graduate somehow.
